Okay, assuming they take care of business in the classroom and stay out of any coaches doghouse - how you going to use Hillman and Ruffin? Hillman: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6LTLmZwpSURuffin: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vMb03dwSXAAre they on the field at the same time? Do you think they are playing the same position and it would be better to keep rotating them to always have fresh legs on the field? Are they wideouts? Slots? I-backs? Combination of all? What about Wildcat or should it be WildAztec with say Ruffin taking the direct snap and Hillman crossing in front for the give or pull depending on what Ruffin reads the DE doing? Watching Hillman's tape, I really like the "Jet Sweep" concept where Hillman is in motion at speed and takes the ball from the QB and is on the perimeter of the defense before they know it. The beauty of this is that while the defense is basically stationary, the ball carrier is at nearly top speed within a couple of steps of taking the ball. This can easily be ran from under center as opposed to the shotgun set that La Habra uses. Another thing they do with Hillman that I really like is that delay route across the middle under the backers from the slot position. With the pressure that Brown and Sampson will put on the LBs to take deep drops this route could really be trouble and Hillman could get lost by the defense. As for Ruffin, I am really intrigued by what he does from the I back position. Do we have counter trey in our package? What about the stretch play that the Colts run so well? Would love to know what sort of ways Borges is envisioning using these two players. |

The most pressing question is can hillman pass block and catch the ball out of the backfield? If he can be an everydown back, then he's number one. I want to see ruffin in slot - get him the ball early and put him in space. If we Hillman can provide an ability to run the ball out of ace back AND pass protect, I'd love to see emptying the back field and having demarco, brown, ruffin and hillman split out.
My guess would be that Ruffin is going to be a good one for us, and will have his moments, but will mostly be situational; Hillman will progress as the year goes on but will mostly be splitting carries with Kazee and the juco will get most of the passing situations with sullivan if we're going 2 backs.
Sullivan will be on the field most downs, almost exclusively in single back formations, and Brown and DeMarco will rarely be off the field (but one will get a blow in some 3 wide out sets). So some spots are closed right there
10-20 snaps on offense and special teams for ruffin
10-20 carries/touches(if he can catch/pass pro) for hillman

Come on AA, it's your offense, how you going to use them? thats exactly how i would use them. why wouldnt i use a rb as an rb and use a wr as a wr? lol they are both great athletes with huge upside. hillman will be our key rb and sullivan will be a short yardage back. ruffin will be a wr..one that will get a lot of reps. I can also see him becoming the kr and pr guy. |

I haven't following the recruiting at all and wasn't familiar with Ruffin. I watched the video you posted. Can he be THAT good? With his burst, overall speed and ability to change direction, he reminded me of Marshall. For me (if he's as good as he looked in the video), I run him out the the backfield and throw to him with some frequency a la Marshall.

The first question I would ask would be directed at Darrell Funk. I'd ask him if his line is ready to run block this year. If so, then which side? Then I would design my offense according to his response.

Nothing against Hillman, but here's my sleeper for playing time: Dwayne Garrett 6'1, 200lbs. 4.6 forty time. Would be one of the bigger backs on the team. Not much said so far about him. www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5PsBWDiLoULook at the yards after contact and the power. (AZ football talent aside) There should be a lot of weapons for Borges choose from. |

Good question DShaw.
I think they should both be on the field at the same time as much as possible.
Both players can play multiple positions on offense, which would make this very, very, possible and a nightmare for defenses.
When I watch Ronnie Hillman on film, the thing that knocks me out is how well he catches the ball out of the back field. I remember us using Marshall in a slot and catching the ball a lot. That is how I envision the use of Ronnie Hillman.
Ditto on Ruffin. Only he can play more spots even Hillman can. He can go as a wide receiver, slot, I formation back, wildcat. So many options.
I don't know enough about offenses to know who should be where, but I do know enough about judging talent to say they both need to be in the game ASAP, and together as much as possible.

A big question for me is how well Hillman can run between the tackles. I don't know if he has the size/strength to be an every down back.

I think no one is really talking about Garrett because its assumed he'll redshirt. I loved his high school film and I think he's going to be a great player for us.
