Remember that business about Chuck Long building a fence around San Diego County so that the Aztec could recruit top players from their own backyard? Well, how is that going currently? The Class of 2010 gives us some interesting data on that question.
Nine of the twenty-seven members of the Class of 2010 are San Diego County products. That's a full one-third of the class. Here they are, with their star and point ratings by Rivals:
Bolanos 3---5.7 Fely 3---5.5 Galea'i 2---5.3 Holder 2---5.4 Keels 3---5.5 Lamar 3---5.5 Perez 2---5.3 Siluano 2---5.4 Whittaker 3---5.5
The fence will really be effective when SDSU grabs some of the local 4 and 5 star athletes.

If you don't like the word "fence," how about "minefield"?

I like the word "fence" and there is no doubt that Hoke is succeeding in that goal more than Chuck Long.
Lets get it done!!!

Right now our fence is like the US-Mexico Border. Hopefully we will get a handle on it though.

Back to the point of the post...way to go HOKE! I like the idea of owning San Diego County. THat's what Miami did when they took their program to the top with south Florida talent. Now they have 3 big schools fighting it out for the top talent: Florida, Florida State and Miami. Hopefully as Hoke takes the program up, we will have that same kind of battleground with USC, UCLA and SDSU.

The term fence makes people expect us to get all the D1 talent in SD, and implies failure if we don't. Hoke needs to focus on guys that fit what he wants in a student athlete. It doesn't matter where he gets them from as long as we win.

You'd have to get at least half, maybe more like 2/3 of upper D1 talent in San Diego to build an upper level team; get the best players you can in SD and continue the efforts along the 15 up to the 210 they've been doing

This implied SD fence is overrated. I Have seen more "bust" from the San Diego area than any other area in Cali. People want to cite the one or two that actually make it big time from SD which is fine. But BSU and Utah have built their program on second tier players from the LA area. LA area player are a lot more tougher players. Im the type of person who doesn't really care where they come from as long as they are winner, though minded, actually attend school, and are not criminals.
Just look at the Padres within the past 10 yrs. Any player that they have drafted from the San Diego area with the exception of Adrian Gonzales has been a "bust."

Our area of recruitment is SoCal. That covers up to Ventura County to the Mexican boarder. And then we pick off players from Vegas, Phoenix, Tucson, and where ever we can.

L.A overall is better than S.D its hard to ignore that. But to basically say every S.D player is softer than L.A players is B.S. As for baseball 90% of players chosen aren't going to make a impact in bigs in fact its probably more than that. But you can build a great team with just getting S.D Talent.
