So far, the Padres are putting together a solid draft. Good mix of guys with speed and athletic ability. Also going after tough signability guys like Hedges, a UCLA commit. Hearing reports that their first round pick, Spangenberg, could sign as early as the weekend.

Spangenberg may not go to Eugene or Arizona. It's plausible from what I'm hearing that he may go to Fort Wayne. His bat is that advanced. Seen as possibly the best pure hitter in the draft.

Keith Law wrote on his Twitter that he thinks the Padres will pry Hedges away from UCLA in August. Both Hedges and Brett Austin, the other catcher the Padres have selected, have drawn positive reviews. The consensus is that Hedges is far and away the best defensive catcher in the draft, maybe even the best defensive position player period.

Recap so far... Round 1 : Cory Spangenberg, 2B Round 1 : Joe Ross, P Supplemental : Michael Kelly, P Supplemental : Brett Austin, C Supplemental : Jace Peterson, SS Round 2 : Austin Hedges, C Round 3 : Matt Andriese, P Round 4 : Cody Hebner, P
So far I like the Spangeberg pick, as well as both catchers. Peterson is an intriguing player, two-sport athlete who played defensive back for McNeese State.

Pope had a better ERA than Jed Bradley, who went in round one. Does not have the same stuff though. Fastball sits 88-91. More of a solid, durable college pitcher than a flamethrower.

Per Corey Brock's Twitter, the Padres have already signed 18 picks. They locked up Jace Peterson today and are expected to sign 4th rounder Cody Hebner and 3rd rounder Matt Andriese shortly. Hold your breath on Hedges and Ross, those two may very well go down to the wire.

Short season Eugene opens up on Friday vs. Boise. Assuming we'll see Spangenberg there for the time being, as well as Peterson.

In that article he said Casey Kelly was a "few weeks" from being in the majors. I doubt that.

Casey Kelly won't reach the majors this year...his AA numbers have not been stellar. He's giving up far too many hits.

at least he can find the strike zone somewhat, compared to Poreda. but yeah, next year maybe, doubtful for a call up this year.

Poreda was designated for assignment today....All that is left of the Peavy trade is Clayton Richard.

Poreda was designated for assignment today....All that is left of the Peavy trade is Clayton Richard. Not true. We traded Adam Russell for Jason Bartlett. So we have a starting pitcher and a starting SS from the trade. Adam Russell update: Best ERA (2.25) of any Tampa Bay reliever, except their closer. Jason Bartlett situation: Jason is contracted next year at $5.5. The club has an option for 2013 at $5.5 with a $1.5 buyout.

This article from MLB.Com has us, at this point, as having the 5th best draft of all teams this year. Interesting read.
A lot of it is based on us signing Hedges and Ross.
I like our approach this year.

I like our approach this year. Ross and Hedges are both protected draft choices. The Padres were very smart in using their only two protected choices to select players who are better than the position they were drafted and may not sign even with top 20 money. It is a gamble but not much of one since next year will provide two players at about the same position in the draft as compensation. Last year the Padres signed their 6th round selection for $1.2 million. That is first round money (for first round talent) to secure a player who many thought was unsignable. Smart.
