This article from MLB.Com has us, at this point, as having the 5th best draft of all teams this year. Interesting read. A lot of it is based on us signing Hedges and Ross. I like our approach this year. Ross and Hedges are both protected draft choices. The Padres were very smart in using their only two protected choices to select players who are better than the position they were drafted and may not sign even with top 20 money. It is a gamble but not much of one since next year will provide two players at about the same position in the draft as compensation. Last year the Padres signed their 6th round selection for $1.2 million. That is first round money (for first round talent) to secure a player who many thought was unsignable. Smart. I'm there, Bill. I must admit I didn't know those two picks where protected, that makes the choices as you say above even more impressive. Hence why in another thread I said I truly think Hoyer's front office has a chance to be a good one and I'm very optimistic towards them.

Signed Jose Dore 8th round for $450K - 3 times slot. 2. Signed John Barbato 6th round for $1.4M - 8 times slot. 3. Signed Zach Cates 3rd round for $765K - 2 times slot. All were considered very difficult signs, so they dropped way down the draft. All signed for well over slot. The word is they also had $1M+ on the table for there #7 pick too. Taking chances on better talent is a good thing and a smart way to improve farm systems.

I didn't consider Bartlett a part of the package, was strictly referring to the pitchers, but good catch Bill. Regarding the draft, I think Hedges is going to command 2 million plus as a Boras client. I think the Padres need to sign him. Catching from an organizational depth standpoint is thin.

You may not consider him "part of the package" but when someone says Richard is all that is left from the trade, that is wrong. It is like having a 20 dollar bill and exchanging it for two 10 dollar bills. The value of the 20 didn't just go away - it was transformed.
