I hope he makes it. I felt sorry for the big lug when they moved him out to the outfield. His spot is 1st. Hope his confidence and swing comes back and he makes it back to the bigs.
But, if he does, then what happens to Rizzo?

Rizzo is the first baseman of the future. Period. Blanks will play left, some first base, and be a nice trade chip.

Blanks can come up and play first and left now. That allows the Padres to rest Ludwick, Venable, and Hawpe. If Ludwick continues to be what he has been since the Padres aquired him, and Blanks plays well, then Blanks can play more and more left field and Ludwick can play leftout.

Concur with your sentiment, Bill. You can see Blanks improvement day by day. Spot start him between LF and 1B this year. Move to LF permanently next season when Rizzo comes up. I think Rizzo is the real deal. Again, I heard an analyst on TV compare Rizzo to Keith Hernandez with a little more power, earlier in the season. I wouldn't mind an eventual lineup with Blanks and Rizzo in it hitting back to back. |

Unfortunately, there's no way Kyle can play LF on a permanent basis. I just think that is asking for injury trouble.

How's his strikeout stats in the minors? It felt like almost every time he went up to bat for the Padres, it ended with a K. I hope he's improved on that

I hope he's improved on that He did strike out a lot (and is) but when he hit it he had a high percentage of home runs and line drives. At 22 when he finished the 2009 season with the Padres, he had 18 walks with 133 at bats. That is a good ratio. His base numbers were: .250 .355 .514 .869 That is outstanding. So striking out 55 times is not a big issue. |

I didn't have time to search for big league OF's who've had tommy john surgery and come back, yet. But, I know Xavier Nady for one has had the surgery. His elbow hasn't held him back, its that damn slider and his ability to miss it that keeps him where he is. ;D |

Nothing to do with his elbow. More to do with the wear and tear on his body on a continual basis.

Kind of makes sense. I will say I thought he played a decent LF and that's for his one year of playing out there. I was looking forward to a couple of years out there. Oh well, just get healthy and back to where he was pre-injury and he'll either make plays for us or bring some talent back in a trade. |

It's just my opinion, but he's already had plantar fasciitis and I worry about nagging foot injuries his entire career if he's relegated to playing the outfield.

Jason McLeod was just on the radio, said Blanks doesn't have the strength yet in his arm to go to the outfield, but he will be the primary first base guy in San Antonio for the time being.

Maybe you are right. If Blanks future is DH or 1B, he would seem to have a future on another team. The Padres need to bring him up to increase his value before he is traded. Maybe he could be our DH when we start playing inter-league games on the road. |

I thought YOU said home runs don't matter I said they are a bad measure of offensive performance. That is why the only long term stats I presented didn't include home runs. Home runs are important but so are other things that only looking at home runs ignores. A player can be very valuable without hitting home runs. A player can be not so valuable while hitting a decent amount of home runs. |
