Here is another response I got from a good friend in TJ. He grew up in TJ and still lives in Tijuana.... ___________________________________________________
From Eduardo to Steve,
Well Steve you have to understand that there are different type of Mexicans, there is the ones that have grown up in the u.s. all there lives, there is the ones that live and grow up in Mexico and there is the border Mexicans that are very different from any of them because culturally you are emotionally evolved in both sides. You shop in the U.S. you go to the movies in English but you also watch the good Spanish movies. You know what’s happening in Mexico with the national team and you have your México colors team shirt and you play the underdog when they play and you root hard for them when the play the u.s. national team but the jersey in the closet is next to the padres, chargers and Lakers jerseys because if you grow up in Tijuana you grow up with your local teams and those are it.
You see in Tijuana there is professional basketball and Baseball and they are sold out more then the double AA soccer team that changes owners every couple of years.
The Padres have a store in the biggest shopping mal in Tj and organize buses to go to the stadium and there official store rules that mall and the busses and always full and never have more seats and they have a ticket master there that always has a line and the joke is that the Padres suck but there the only show in town but they have Latin promotions that they promote in Tj on a constant time
The Lakers have promotions in Tijuana and in Tijuana my brothers, cousins, friends, and friends of friends all go to the sports book to bet on the games on colleague ncaa tournaments in basketball and on bowl games and they all know the players and we all know that the Aztecs where in the tournament because we do the fantasy play, we do the betting pools we talk about it but there is no relation to us directly and we all know that the Aztecs have not been to bowl games because we check the standings on the Sunday paper and on the internet and if they would be good or do promos for Latin people we would go no question.
Basically there is an opportunity for the Aztecs to tap into a fluent market but that market is clear that is ignored
I have friends that go to colleague games in TX because they promote in Mexico and they do pagacke trips as well as Arizona

If you're proposing marketing to TJ, before one dollar is spent on advertising on tv or radio or whatever, I would want to see the payback metric. In other words, if you spend say $50k on advertising in TJ, what does that get you in return? And is that more or less than 50k in orange/riverside/la county and most importantly san diego county. As someone pointed out, much of the marketing is done in trade and I'm sure much as part of the radio deal. We need more moeny for marketing, but just like we spend a ton on football, we need to know it will be used properly, otherwise, just spend 50k on schollys

He was at state my freshman year, so that lovable group of not exactly big time winners has a special place in my heart and the other 1400 people that would go to a game.

Sure, I understand they care about Ameican football. It's called "The NFL". They will not be willing to make the jump down to watching the college game. College Football Saturday is not part of their culture there. Is not, has not, nor ever will be. End of story. They have a chance someday of having a NFL team in Mexico. They have absolutely ZERO chance of having a college team play for a berth in the Cotton Bowl. Get the distinction? You go throwing SDSU marketing dollars down there, it's not just throwing good money after bad money, it's throwing bad money after bad money. They. Don't. Care. Zero return on investment. Stick to talking about your true love, USC football. Sure, I can go on and on about SC football. But first, let's talk about the SDSU football games at USC. Oh, and at UCLA. And at Anaheim Stadium. And at Oregon State. And at BYU. And at Colorado State. And at the Air Force Academy. And, most importantly, why I didn't see your lazy ass there at any of them.

Stick to talking about your true love, USC football. Then he should know. The great Anthony Munoz went straight to USC from TJ. How does he explain that one? Hey, Greg... Look at my thumb. Gee, you're dumb!! Early life & College Career The Ontario, California-born Muñoz attended Chaffey High School and played basketball and baseball in addition to football. As a youth, he was barred from the local Pop Warner league team because he was too big; he concentrated on baseball instead. Muñoz played college football at the University of Southern California. He also played baseball there, pitching for USC’s national championship team in 1978.[1]

Curious as to your knowledge of TJ and Mexico-ever lived there? Worked there? More importantly, I'm assuming you have lived in America, and have some rooting interest in SDSU. And, indeed, claim to have some sort of marketing genius. So where the hell are your results in marketing SDSU atheltics here in the good ol' U.S. of A.? Get me the data on that, and then I'll listen with wholehearted interest in your scheme for tapping into the wallets of all those Mexicans with such abundant entertainment dollars at their disposal that they would travel 30 miles after waiting through an hour-long border traffic jam to come to root on a school they have no affiliation with. I'm breathless with anticipation.

Monty,
David is the head coach of Mexicali team in Mexican League. They had a good record up until the earthquake that hit Mexicali. It destroyed their practice facilities and they ended up playing in TJ some of their games. He also gives lessons and has a youth academy.

Go ahead and deflect all you want but one of us actually goes to SDSU games and the other would rather support $C.

Show me your ticket stubs for every one of them. I've got mine. Sounds to me like you've got a case of "Lying Liars and the Lies They Tell"...

No I wasn't at every single one, but I was at most of them and I was at every single home game, save a few for weddings and such. You on the other hand admitted to going to $C games instead of Aztec home games.

I forgot this little tidbit on this topic....for what its worth.
Me and my friend Jerry Brown (who was down here from Shasta College) went to the opening game of Petco Park. San Diego State vs somebody. The first night of Petco.
I was going with a group of friends and I purchased the tix. They paid me back at the park.
I bought 12 tickets. Of that group, Jerry and I were from the U.S.......The other 10 ALL came from Tijuana.
And just for the record.....They ALL wanted to see Monty Montezuma up close (oops....er...I mean the Aztec Warrior). I arranged for Carlos to come to our section for a visit. They were stunned, impressed, and loved Monty Montezuma.

I think it was against Houston (isn't that MOores' alma mater). That was so sweet to watch the aztecs christen the new downtown stadium - one of my highlights as an Aztec.
