I know the Padres market to Mexico. Do the Aztecs? If not, why not? It seems a natural with several million within radio and tv range.

Our PR department is light years behind, especially when it comes to internet marketing. that is what is disturbing - I can understand they don't have the budget for a bunch of tv and radio spots, but with those (probable) limitations and (likely) a lack of man power, it doesn't mean they can't utilize more viral sources.

Can't disagree with any of the comments, but how many people in TJ are interested in football?

I have talked about this on Aztec boards for years.
I have many friends in TJ and beyond that love the Aztecs. I got them tickets for many games and they were willing to pay, drive, and attend.
I talked to Mike Bohn about it a couple of times.
Response from Bohn and others?.......Nothing.

Is there any football (American) played at the schools in TJ? Might be able to find a kicker now and then down there or maybe another player. Won't hurt to proselytize down there a bit but I imagine there is a lot of lower hanging fruit elsewhere.

And by the way, Mexico is crazy about basketball.

For starters we'll have to wait for the next president to determine his/her commitment towards athletics. Secondly, we'll need to see if Sterk is given the power to make badly needed changes. If he's here as a fundraiser he should have the authority to see where the money goes. Anyone with a brain wouldn't stay here if that's not the case. I think he's too young to be in retirement mode. Utah is a prime example of how a state school should run its program. They've done more with less. It's only been recently that Weber did something about it, mainy because he was pressured to do so. If football is a success that should give Sterk the funds to make the administration more progressive. It currently operates on a shoestring budget thanks to the lack of accountability at all levels over the years.

Really? As compared to soccer? All I know is that the apartment house in back of me has a lot of Latino renters and when I'm watching an SDSU away game on TV and it's opposite a soccer game, it ain't football they're listening to. =Bob

I remember when Coach Coryell was coaching in his first years, the Aztecs played Mexico Poly. Don't know if that university still exists.

LOTS of American FB Fans! And actually they really follow the Chargers and when we give them something to get excited about will be BIG Aztec fans. TJ has more population than SD County and as usual our MKT department miss's on an easy coverage W. Best regional HS American FB team is in TJ- most of Universities in Mex have American FB- quality typically falls into D-3 quality from what I KNOW (have a buddie whom coaches in Ensanada) and have seen... Lol to your point Steve the BBall team is the Zonkies- not a joke for real. They play on Rio at the Municipal Auditorium past Caliente Hipodromo.

I sent a facebook message to my friend Jorge who is a huge sports fan in TJ. Here is response about TJ and football/basketball/Aztecs. ____________________________________________________
Jorge to Steve...
Chargers Fan base is BIG.
I think as long the Chargers are winning the aztecs can benefit from that "FAME" and do something with that.
I don't know that many Aztecs football fans but i'm certai of this: Charger fan in TJ has the potential to be an Aztec football fan. Build the wins and they will come.....
Now, for basketball i think i would go and watch an Aztec game before an NBA game, i think the basketball side its much better and the potential big too.
Finally, you have to remember this, as long as you guys get a winner, the Tijuana fan base will increase and we'll gladly be spending our dollars there with you.
I would love to watch the Aztecs win more!.
Good luck and best wishes from TJ.

I had a few conversations on this topic with Schemmel before his "departure", one of which my "cousin" from Guadalajara was in on. In none of these did we focus on football players, but instead golf, tennis, baseball, and of course soccer. There are some ridiculously wealthy families in Mexico and if we could get some of their children who honestly deserve an athletic scholarship due to their skill level to come to SDSU, it would open up all kinds of fund raising avenues as all these kids have a huge network of "uncles". We could literally raise millions in Mexico alone every year and of course these funds could be distributed throughout our athletic department, i.e. to football as well. Imagine if we had offered a golf scholarship to Lorena Ochoa and she had been an Aztec.....wow. Of course, if we get some underprivileged soccer playing youth, that could open some nice doors too as we all just saw, Mexico is crazy about its soccer.
