although I think SDSU clearly has the best talent and depth ... New Mexico is suddenly not far behind.
PF Negedu has been cleared to play for them this upcoming year. I'm not sure how it pans out, and who starts for them, but their only returning big man - PF/C Hardeman might not even start for them next year. Negedu has been mentioned as a Larry Johnson type of player who is an absolute monster inside at 6'7 235.
6'11 PF/C freshman Kirk can shoot from outside (made 18, 3 pointers his senior year) and shot 80% from FT. But he still averaged 8 blks and 14 rbs per game too.
Between 6'11 Kirk, 6'9 Hardeman, 6'7 Negedu and 6'9 Gordon they will always have 2 very talented guys in the game. Gordon has been working hard with the team in the off season and seems to be setting an example and acting like the perfect teammate, for now.
Probably UNLV with 6'8 Q Thomas, 6'8 Stanback, 6'10 Massamba and 6'11 Lopez are 3rd?

Well, one isnt eligible the first semester, one has never played at the D1 level, so might take some time to get in the swing of things even if he is the second coming, and the other has had (mostly lawyers though) worries about his health - it is a very, very unknown frontline. Looks good on paper and the perfect pokey lineup (insert smiley here), but if I had to choose I'd take SDSU's with 2 guys that started all last year, one who will be starting his 4th year, and all three that have earned all league honors.

The uncertainty is intriguing and scary. I think Kirk will come off the bench behind Hardemen and be solid. I think Snell starts but is more of a role player this year. But I could honestly see either Gordon or Negedu end up starting every game in conference and one of them is 1st team all-conference?

Maybe, I think we can for sure pencil one of the SDSU front line for first team (mabye 2) and 2 of them have to be in the top half dozen or so for Conf. POY.

I think the Lobos could really have some problems this season. They have a LOT of question marks. I really think Coach Fisher is stepping it up. I have high expectations for this season with the team we're going to have.

Come on, do you really think that frontline lis better than SDSU? Thomas, 6'10; White, 6'8; Carlwell, 6'10; Leonard, 6'7; Shelton, 6'6, and Medhi, 6'8. I don't see the comparison.

I don't think it is close on paper. I think Kirk is a slow white guy from New Mexico who hasn't had to play against much good competition. The transfer from Tenn. is a real question health wise, and Gordon is a head case. I don't think Snell is any better than his teammate, Franklin.

Sorry, no way NM had a better front line that SDSU - Leonard is the best player overall, plus 2 top seniors (both could be first team) in Thomas and White...

Slow white guy from New Mexico ... vs slow black guy from Illinois favors NM and, yes .. Negedu and Gordon are the wild cards, but according to local NM pub, Gordon is the best player at practice, a fantastic teammate, and many think he should end up on the 1st team all-conference. Don't forget ... most posters on here had no idea who Hobson was last year and assumed White would be 1st team MWC and maybe even POY .... and it turned out the opposite was true. Matchups ... PF/C Thomas vs Hardeman ... advantage SDSU PF White vs Gordon ... advantage New Mexico PF/SF Leonard vs Snell .... advantage SDSU Bench PF/C Carlwell vs Kirk ... advantage New Mexico PF Shelton vs Negedu ... advantage New Mexico

PF/C Carlwell vs Kirk ... advantage New Mexico You give the advantage to a true frosh over a senior who weighs 70 pounds more and has three years of Div. 1A experience?

I love his analysis because he follows this stuff, but dude favors all newcomers over players that have set at least a baseline standard.

Kirk's numbers were better than Carlwell's in high school and they will be better in college, too. I'm not sure if there's one aspect of Carlwell's game that is better, other than experience and weight (which might not actually be an advantage), which he also had over every opponent last year and he didn't dominate anyone. It has nothing to do with underclassmen vs upperclassmen .... it's about who can play. Carlwells career has been defined by "unfulfilled potential" and Kirk is the slow white guy who has always exceeded expectations. Based on their track records ... my moneys on Kirk.

Our front line is going to kick some serious ass!!! KL, BW, MT with TS and BC backing them up. Now that is great depth right there. I didn't even mention Franklin or frenchie. We have a great front court and will be doing some serious dropkicking on teams. Our 3 starters could all make first team all mountain west.

Bottom line... Lobos will likely be pretty good this year -- a little drop-off on the wing but improvement down low.

Bottom line... Lobos will likely be pretty good this year -- a little drop-off on the wing but improvement down low. And this should be no surprise to anyone. But SDSU is by far the better team no matter how you sllce it up for comparison sake. I don't mean that as a knock on New Mexico. All of this will be decided on the court this year. Until then there are only opinions. IMO, any statement to the effect that Kirk is better than Carlwell is absurd. Carwell isn't slow for a guy his size. He needs to play more aggressively yes, but slowness isn't his issue. You may be able to look back on the year and say Kirk is that good, but at this time he is simply a question mark that you are projecting to exceed expectations.

Kirk may very well be better than Carlwell by the time Kirk is an upperclassman. However, he will be a frosh next year. If nothing else, taking experience into it... I'll say Carlwell > Kirk in 2010-2011.

I'll say Carlwell > Kirk in 2010-2011. Bingo, experience and understanding the league you're playing in and your teammates is very valuable. Brian C is a pretty good passer, has some decent moves, above average little set shot for a big man and provides a different dimension to the team. His stats weren't great, but he was a contributor in conference with his ability to change the look and pace of the game for a few minutes. ex[erience matters and filling in pieces matter - if brian c was a 6'9 long and thin guy with an explosive first step and the same type of stats he wouldn't be valuable almost at all because we already have 2 guys like that - how it fits into the sum is more important than the part in-itself.

Yes, and those guys are tremendously talented and play well. That's the reason Carlwell only plays 14 mins per game and White and Thomas play 30, is because of talent ... not because he's a secret, change of pace, weapon. His assist to TO ratio was by far the worst on the team and he committed as many fouls fouls, in half the time as Thomas or White. If we had a bench player, even close to the talent of Thomas, Carlwell would hardly play at all. Last year when White went down with an injury it was Shelton who stepped into the starting lineup ... and during the most critical games of the year (the MWC tourney and ncaa tourney) with 2 players with broken fingers and extremely limited depth, ... Carlwell's minutes decreased to almost 10 per game.

I'm not saying he's some secret weapon either, I'm saying he does give us something different and he does have some experience. Those are two beneficial things - against certain teams he's helpful. Regardless of BC, the starting 3 is the best in the MWC and BC is capable of playing 15 minutes, TIm Shelton if healthy will provide some positives, even Medhi against certain teams/defenses will be a positive. Best starting 3: Aztecs and it is supplemented by three players that provide different things and different pieces
