Exactly and I've never defended Chuck Long as being a good head coach. All you do is defend Long ever since he got fired. He sucked as SDSU head coach end of story. Yeah, but he hasn't defended Chuck much on this board, so let's cut him a little slack. (And remember - I argued with him about that more than most people did. I was one of the two original, "Fire Chuck Long Now," people during his first season. Steve's been pretty restrained on THIS version of the Aztec board when it comes to Chuck Long, and I think that should be noted.) I think we can all agree that Chuck wasn't ready for the gig and didn't do a very good job. So, how about this year's Aztec O-Line?

Long's 9-27 record and 2 road wins in 3 years do not my help to look bad Exactly and I've never defended Chuck Long as being a good head coach. I am saying that this year and last years schedule is worse than any schedule Chuck Long played (and his weren't tough). The fact that we only one 4 games with that schedule last year is HORRENDOUS and you are defending it. not defending it, pointing out that games that most teams would consider body bag games, have not been so for the Aztecs the last half decade. Losing to Ohio State, Notre Dame and UCLA isn't the problem, losing to WAC teams on the road is. The schedule is not markedly different. Should we win more games this year, of course. Just like with the past 3 coaches, I'm not out to put some bar they have to jump over right away, I want to see progress and a team better equipped for the future - that was surely not there the last 2 years of Tollner, or during the last two coaches, there were some things I felt were positive last year, I'm awaiting to see what happens this year to really have an idea what the team has. The oline, dline, Secondary, the RBs, to an extent the LBs all have some severe question marks. Let's equate this to bball, though it is dissapointing that we haven't won in the tourney, outside that 2 year period (I think when slaughter and heath were freshman) the program has shown steady improvement - that is what I'd like to see from the football team this year, stronger, better conditioned and battling more; the talent is still at the Epps, Croatian Sensation and company level overall. We've got some jucos, some red shirt and true freshman to provide some depth and play some special teams so now the clock really starts. We've lost to rubbish teams which is likely a combination of rubbish coaching and less than ideal talent, we'll start to see if the coaching part has improved because the team talent has not, overnight, improved markedly.

that was surely not there the last 2 years of Tollner CORRECTION: that was surely not there the last 5 years of Tollner I guess I should say I wasn't there but the last 2 years of Tollner, but, just looking at the absymal record and the ability to at least be mediocre before, it seems to really have finished the nose dive those last couple years - and those were some very uninspired teams (though, those teams looked more like D1 football programs than most of those we've had since.

"No excuses"? You mean you're gonna be ready to can this guy if he hasn't gotten it done after year two when you were insistent that Long deserved four? No, I won't.....but I am sure there will be some that will.

No, I won't.....but I am sure there will be some that will. Not if he wins at least 5 games, which would show further progress from last year. Now, if the team were healthy and only won 3 games, then I think there would be a problem. But I don't think that's even a remote possibility (not realistically). This staff is the best that this program has seen since 1996 at least. I have faith that they're going to get the job done.

It wasn't Long's 2 wins or Craft's 5 wins that led to many of justifying their firing, it was the way the teams looked. There is no drop dead number of wins to me, it is the way the team looks

Our oline will be much improved. What you saw in spring wasnt their only window of opportunity to improve. They have the ability to improve every single day, even when they arent on the field. Knowledge and knowing your assignments is vital with oline. I haven seen BCS conference oline that was very undersized, but they all knew their assignments and executed. And if you are worried about the oline in terms of strength and conditioning..no need to worry because aaron wellman is the strength coach, it doesnt get much better than that. Trask and Embernate will have a great year. They did very well last year. Embernate is a stud and is only getting better. Bolanos will be amazing. The guy is 6'8 280-300lbs of PURE muscle. The guy is quite slim and not overweight. alec johnson was a very good guard, but he got hurt early on, so not may of you go to see him. So look for him to compete to get his spot back quinones and draheim are improving, both could be on the starting line opening next year. I ran into Bolanos at a picnic a while back and got a chance to talk to him. Real cool kid who seemed excited to get a chance to help improve our running game. You are right aztecalumn as in he seemed to be all muscle. I look forward to seeing how the entire line gels together in year 2 of Coach Hoke and staff.

Steve - if you are right and the OL at least becomes average this year, then perhaps we do go bowling with 6 or 7 wins. I'm watching a replay of last year's UNM game on CSTV and Lindley is under almost constant pressure this game. On the few plays where we are able to give him time to set his feet and scan the field, the offense looks solid, but man those plays were few and far between. Looking forward to the opening of camp so we can see how things on OL shake out. Man would it be fun to see what this attack could do if Lindley has time to set up properly. So when are you going to start a thread on the defense as the defense has miles to go as well....

I do think we will have an average defense this season, but I am actually more worried about the defense being avg. than the offense being avg.
