They aren't OU...They aren't USC...
But they will be much improved.
JMO....I think the coaches are underestimating the OLine this year...ON PURPOSE...
The returning Olineman are progressing better than most think AND with the addition of a couple of JC Olineman they will be very formidable.
Chuck Longs recruits are now Juniors and Sophs. I'm not saying they are great, but they are good. Now they are experienced. They have good coaching (hopefully).
I am not predicting any All Conf. O Lineman. No first round picks.....But this group of Olineman is much better than the staff is letting on and than most fans think.
I am not talking about a Oline and team that can get us to 10-2, but an Oline that can get us to 6-6 or 7-5 and to a bowl game.

Steve - Do you have info to back up your statement of them progressing?
I only got to watch one day of Spring Ball, and I spent that day watching the OL. It was not a good day by any stretch of the imagination.
I am not trying to pick a fight here; I'm just saying that what I saw on that day did not give me much encouragement.
As I think we all understand the OL is absolutely crucial to a successful program, so while I hope you are correct, let's just say I have my concerns, and really wish the JC guys would have been able to be on campus for Spring ball.

The fact that the staff brought in 3 JC guys tells me they are not sold on the returning guys. I just hope those 3 are as good as some posters seem to think they are.

I think I'm with Ron on this one. The JC guys were brought in for a reason, and I don't think it was to watch from the sidelines.

I think I'm with Ron on this one. The JC guys were brought in for a reason, and I don't think it was to watch from the sidelines. I don't think they were brought in to watch either. I didn't say above that we didn't need JC OLineman and we could be better without those 3. As always, football is a team game. It takes all the parts to succeed.

To me it's pretty simple: If we don't go at least 3-1 OOC, then the O-line is bad no matter who is manning it. I would disagree with his John. It is a team game

I would disagree with his John. It is a team game But the O-line is where it all starts. If we can't control the LOS against Nicholls State, NM State, and Utah State, then that's a bad O-line. And if we go 3-1, that makes them a good OLine?

I hope you're right Steve but like dshawfan, I haven't seen anything with my own eyes that would give me a reason to believe you.
The fact that none of those guys as redshirt sophs were able to beat out a guy who was only in his second year playing the position was very disheartening.

If we go 3-1 that does not automatically make them a good O-line, but if we don't it shows for sure that they aren't a good O-line.

If we go 3-1 that does not automatically make them a good O-line, but if we don't it shows for sure that they aren't a good O-line. I agree, but I think it would make them an average Oline. And that is what I am saying in this thread. We are going to go from a bad (inexperienced) Oline to an average (experienced) Oline and should be good enough to get us 6 wins.

And if we go 3-1, that makes them a good OLine? Not necessarily. Those are barely DI teams. Does it make them average?

I'm eagerly waiting on what Seagull has to say about our O-line.
If he's happy, I'm happy.
If not, then....y'know what's up.

Does it make them average? Not necessarily. It would make them better than the OL's on three bad teams. To find out whether they are "good" or "average" would require games against different levels of competition. One more question John....If we go 3-1 will it show that the OLine has improved over the previous two years? (Even a little bit)

Our oline will be much improved. What you saw in spring wasnt their only window of opportunity to improve.
They have the ability to improve every single day, even when they arent on the field.
Knowledge and knowing your assignments is vital with oline. I haven seen BCS conference oline that was very undersized, but they all knew their assignments and executed.
And if you are worried about the oline in terms of strength and conditioning..no need to worry because aaron wellman is the strength coach, it doesnt get much better than that.
Trask and Embernate will have a great year. They did very well last year. Embernate is a stud and is only getting better. Bolanos will be amazing. The guy is 6'8 280-300lbs of PURE muscle. The guy is quite slim and not overweight.
alec johnson was a very good guard, but he got hurt early on, so not may of you go to see him. So look for him to compete to get his spot back
quinones and draheim are improving, both could be on the starting line opening next year.

One more question John....If we go 3-1 will it show that the OLine has improved over the previous two years? (Even a little bit) Again, not necessarily. These games can not prove that we're good, only that we aren't as bad as three bad teams. We'll have to get into league play to see whether the O-line is any better or worse than last year's. Classic John.....So no matter WHAT they do, they aren't any good.

I posted this on another thread, but I thought they made decent improvements throughout the year running the ball, at times, off-tackle, and particularly pulling a la student body left, and the other pulling derivations of the sweep. Can they, and let us not totally dismiss the importance of the running backs in hitting holes quick and aggressively, run the ball inbetween the tackles? Pass protection was adequate to pretty good last year, of course some improvement could be made.
They need to get a little meaner and be able to control the middle of the line, but I do think they'll be better this year.
Hillman sounds like he'll be good, kazee hopefully will show some consistency and sullivan will continue to be solid, and then the big fullback, the kid from NAU/Juco, a frosh like Muema, etc need to improve as a unit too
