Per ASR. He's a 6'3 185lbs wideout from Los Angeles West Adams Prep. He's unranked by Rivals.

Way to go Hoke. It's starting to feel like a real program around here.

scout says he ran a 4.5 40 and he had interest from a few other big schools ... but he hardly caught the ball in high school. my guess is he ends up at safety .. or even corner with that speed. I wonder if he's any relation to the angry baseball player Gary? iowa.scout.com/a.z?s=8&p=8&c=1&nid=4877229

ASR quotes him as saying he had a big growth spurt since last season and will playing at a much larger size this year. Looks like Hoke and staff uncovered another sleeper.

The Rivals' article mentions that one of the coaches on staff at his HS was recruited by Hoke back in his days at Michigan. I'm sure the coach wouldn't have sent him down to SDSU's camp if he didn't think the kid had some skills. Just as I am sure our staff can evaluate talent. I like this kid's size.

Although living in L.A., I didn't even recognize the name of his school. Googling it, I see West Adams Prep has only been in existence for two years and last year their team put a beatdown on several other brand new schools. This year they're stepping WAY up in class to play in the historical league of inner-city schools like Locke, plus Birmingham in the San Fernando Valley where Milton Knox played, among others. I therefore suspect the beatdowns are going to be on the other side of the scoreboard this year. However, it should be good for Sheffield's future to play against the much higher level of competition.
Welcome to SDSU, Anthony.

This sounds like a huge sleeper or a big reach..........hope it's the former. That's what I think too. I've been very impressed with every verbal we've gotten to this point. However, no offense to the young man but this one sure seems to be the kind of recruit that typified the Chuck Long regime.

ASR said that our coaches watched him at our camp or passing tourney so he must have been impressive given the lack of Jr year stats - although i will be the first to admit that statistics can and are misleading.
Welcome aboard Mr. Sheffield!
I am thrilled by the speed at which we are filling our class this year. However, I do have to note, as others have, that we only have one OL and I believe one DL out of the 10 verbals thus far. I'm sure the coaching staff is aware of that, too.

Because he grew a few inches over the summer and is now 6'3 (and probably still growing) and still runs a 4.5 are the only reasons the staff took a chance on him, I would think.
It's similar to basketball programs that take chances on 7'0 athletes (who are not necessarily players) all the time. Sometimes they learn how to play and sometimes they don't ... but when you are an up and coming program, like we are trying to become, you have to take chances on kids.
