I have to agree with CV. The coaching staff must find a way to free the kids up to play. There must be honest communication, work hard together but still play loose. We are way to tight and does not look like they are having much fun. Loose teams with solid fundamentals will play well. Figure it out coaching staff.

Agreed. But how do you get there after you start by being swept by OK at home? Winning breeds confidence, confidence helps kids stay loose and creates winning ways.
I think dshawfan posted about figuring out their identity. Do you guys close to the program see any attempt to create identity either in type of recruits or in practices or in a commitment to the style of play in games?

From what i see they aren't allowed to create an identity. they are always to tight to play and have fun. believe me they work hard and have good recruits but they cant seem to break loose and have fun. i see other teams laughing and joking around and having some fun, not goofing and messing around, but not our team. i have talked to a couple of players that played with Tony in the bigs and he was away from the others in the dugout and not joining in the fun and enjoying the game. it was a job too him and his play was an example of that and it worked for him but this kind of attitude doesnt cut it with most college boys. they need to have fun and enjoy the game before it turns into a job for some of them. just let them play as he has good players and recruits but they need to have some fun and enjoy it or it turns into drudgery.

All that little league stuff does not better not apply here. Hard reality is this, the team didnt have much talent and shut down pitcher Reed got hurt.. take away,Air force , Wagner and the like from win column this year, it doesnt look too impressive. Weren't five hundred against some like or better teams.. The five or six people out with CVBIG at the mwc tournament, saw that it was pretty apparent that sdsu was better than Air Force and thats it. Maybe even with a UNLV but they got hot.

CV could not disagree with you more. What you are describing is hit and giggle summer league ball-Show up 20 minutes before the game and play.. Do you think this is how a Texas, Oklahoma, hell even a TCU operates? A hard/ disciplined or even an aloof coach is not a killer of enthusiasm. That part of the deal is up to the athlete. In a way it is a job.I They are required to practice and train. Like a job they will sometimes be successful and times they will struggle a bit. thats just the way it is, especially in baseball. You just dont just show up and win. you cant give up outs and Ab's You have to grind.

now lets get down to the quick. What is needed here is a coaching staff that melds the team as a cohesive unit that play as one. time for the program to evolve and grow. after 2 years involved in the program i have not seen any of the above...... Again too many San Diego kids. re--CChronically soft!

I like what you're saying sbsucker, but I'm not so sure I agree with you on the SD recruits. Everyone else recruits San Diego and SoCal. The only two pitchers in the majors from the 2009 draft are San Diego guys. Lots of SD players in MLB. Basketball is a different. I like Hoke's approach - recruit players from winning programs. They compete start to finish and put in the work ahead of game time. I'm looking forward to this next year and seeing what Valenzuela brings. He'll have his recruits in there. Like you said, playing collegiate sports is like a job. A good boss can make his team that much better.

I don't know how many games you went this year but i went to all of them. watched tcu, cal state fullerton and the likes, BYU, UNM, all have a lot of fun as well as play good baseball. I have never been a part of hit and giggle summer league or travel ball. my son always played for serious teams that had a lot of fun playing baseball and kicked ass and were not at all giggle ball. a lot of that is out there. there needs to be hard practices but if i can quote the TCU coach we work hard in practice but the games are the reward. need to be loose and able to function during the game part and not wound up tight like a rubber band so you cant perform.

Agreed. Anyone familiar with travel ball in San Diego understands that there are all levels of quality play and coaching at all levels. An elite player can find an elite team. An elite recruit can even find a college summer travel ball club to play for.

CV, you're awesome. To the point. I got reamed on this board the last time I brought this up, but....who was responsible for the pitching on the 2010 team??? Anyone? let me break it down like this. Addison Reed- best closer in the nation but after pre-season injuries had to be used as a starter. had a great year. recruited by filter osullivan - hurt his arm in 1st appearance after 17 pitches. will be in pitching role only next year. will be rock solid - filter wynveen- good lefty, battles. will be better next year after a year of expierience. filter shaver - bust will not return filter pecararo - hot and cold - filter nadolski - hurt shoulder should be rdy for nxt year filter bellez - hurt arm and was removed from the team for cheating on a test. filter ethan miller - shows signs of maybe blossoming into a good starter. big kid with potential. filter sanford - never performed up to the hype- filter alcala - gave us some good innings but hasnt developed yet. filter rasmussen - coming around after some changes made to his arm slot by valenzuela filter crabb - great start as a frosh but got hit in the head with a line drive and have not heard how he is doing so far so dont know what will happen with him. filter mcdaniel - crafty lefty with no velocity but works batters well. filter moranda - bust will not be back. filter you cant blame valenzuela for the staff this year cause it was inherited. he did the best with what he had to work with and i expect things to be better next year. he is a good pitching coach and we will see how good next year. i can say this. pitching was overall horrible last year and it was hard to sit thru games always chasing the other team. hard to blast you for asking that question. just had to give real answers even though its painful to recall last year......

So do we have any future Strasburg's in this crop? Or any potential diamonds in the rough?

Thank you for the honest answer. Looking ahead: I'm rooting for Valenzuela and his recruits...many of which come from San Diego programs.
Go Aztecs.
