Do any of the baseball experts here know whether Tony Gwynn's recruiting class was decimated by the draft or not?

Not sure what it means, but I heard T. Gwynn on 1360 and he said 7 out of 21 recruits were drafted.

I also heard the interview the other day and he said they should know by August 15th the final outcome. I think that is the deadline to sign with the team that drafted them or decide to go to school, something like that.

Several of the pitchers were drafted late but really want to play pro baseball. I will be surprised if we keep Walby and Vader. Cole Swanson did not get drafted, has a mediocre year, but as a 6'5" hard-throwing lefty he has lots of upside.
Kyle Hayes did not get drafted and is probably a more polished pitcher than the others. He is also a hitter, so it will be interesting to see if they let him play two-ways.
I don't know about the catcher, Haynal. I think someone said he got drafted, but late.
I don't know about the out-of-town guys.

Quick question for those that follow Aztec baseball real close.
Who is considered our #1 recruit in this incoming class?

I also heard they are pulling a dozen scholarships - not D1 ready. Can't really pull them because schoolies are renewed yearly.

they are renewed if you are wanted back. most all freshmen had money pulled this year and rightfully so. bad grades, no committment leads to no money. just like the real world. tony cleaned house at the end of last year and you will see a whole new different attitude on the field this coming year. the newbies better be ready to work.....

If that's the case, then I'm sorry that is recruiting failures!! Part of recruiting is finding players that have grades, have a good work ethic & are team oriented. Somebody is not doing their job! Let's hope this years group is better.

Let's hope this years group is better. Only ones not doing their job are the so called STUDENT/athletes. coach cannot make them study or get good grades. just plain lazy last year is the bottom line......

There's usually a history for these types of failures. Why do you think the APR scores have goning up, especially in football. It's because of the type of student athlete that is being recruited now.

Changes the way you think of the acronym, "T. G. I. F.", doesn't it?

that kid in high school may be a great kid all around but put them in a college atmosphere with all the new freedoms to do what you want just sometimes doesnt work out...... you can't tell who is going to do what especially with college kids.
now lets get down to the quick. What is needed here is a coaching staff that melds the team as a cohesive unit that play as one. time for the program to evolve and grow. after 2 years involved in the program i have not seen any of the above......
