There is now not any doubt about it. It's Utah.
1. They're leaving us so we owe them a payback. 2. We may never get a chance to play them again. 3. Most importantly, beating the Utes would apparently help the MWC's AQ bid. Here's why.
Under the arcane formula the BCS uses, although the Utes will be playing in the MWC for one more season, assuming they go to the Pac in 2011, their BCS points for 2009 will be transferred to the Pac-12. (Boise's 2009 points will be transferred to the MWC.) SDSU doesn't figure to be exactly outstanding this year so losing to us would put a real crimp in Utah's football RPI. (I have no idea what the thing is formally called.) Simultaneously, because Utah figures to be very good, beating them would really help our RPI.
We get the Utes at a perfect time. First, the game is at Qualcomm. Second, it's the epitome of a sandwich game for the Utes since they make their first-ever trip to South Bend the week before and they play BYU the week after.
Bottom Line: If I'm Brady Hoke, I'm already thinking about how I'm going to defeat the Utes.

Big game indeed and it should draw well.
Would love to smack them on that day.

Big game indeed and it should draw well. If I'm SDSU's athletic department, I'm already thinking of some special promotion for that one. Publicize it as a Farewell Party or some such thing with handouts at the gate of those little horns you blow on New Year's. Fans would blow them long and loud every time the Utes try to call signals.

I like it SGF. On our advertising of this game. We will probably be to "nice" to do anything like that. Remember, we can't even stand at football games and some of us are threatened to to kicked out of games at Viejas for yelling at the refs less than 4 feet from our seats. We don't want to do anything to cause us a "homefield advantage", you know.

I remember when we ran up the score on these guys during the Luginbill era. Utah's coach didn't want to shake Al's hand after that thrashing. Let's do it again, for old time's sake. Oldie Out

Im going to have to disagree with you, the reason being the talent difference is too much for us to win imo and they have a good coach so they will not overlook us. The most important game of the season for me is @ Wyoming (show we can win some road games against FBS competition) and verses AFA

We are not going to beat Utah. The most important games we play this year are against NM State, Nicholls State, and Utah State (or whichever those three OOC teams are). If we don't beat those guys---if not slaughter them---either at home or on the road---then we're gonna have a pretty good idea of where this program is going under Hoke. I have read on here that the guy needs five years. That's hogwash. Other programs have made farther jumps faster than we did under either Craft or Long. We'll find out in short order how our guys stack up against vastly inferior size, strength, skill, and, presumably, coaching. I've been conditioned to believe that we'll lose one of these three games, but hopefully Hoke's words about discipline, strength, etc. are more than just words. It doesn't take long to demand---and get---results in the gym and in the brain. John, we should be 3-1 in those games. I will be very disappointed if we aren't (as much as I was last year). Here is my prediction... -Loss at Missouri (although I hope not..I do think we should be in this game going into the 4th quarter) -Nicholls State at home......Aztec blow out by 20 or more. -Utah State at home..........Aztecs win by 7. -New Mexico State on the road.....Aztecs win by 9.

Are they going in '11 or '12? I have totally dropped out of this $#!+.
I'm also over the AQ stuff and all that, I'm just concerned with finally getting to watch my team in a bowl game. To that point, the most important game is new MExico state - a road win would give us a lot of confidence and presumably get us to a 2-0 start. The point is the team getting out strong and confident - remember Hoke's quotes that after the UCLA loss he called the Seniors in and they said that was the time they usually quit - and clicking going into Columbia. This is still mostly a left-over team from the losing, almost never winning on the road ways. A commanding victory would propel the team forward.

AFA is a toss up but a winnable game. We should be able to compete with Utah for a while but they should be able to pull away. Wynn has more experience and their RB Wide is back. But let's hope I'm wrong and that we can pull the upset.

I agree that the most important game is at New Mexico. If we win that one, it will be a major confidence booster for our team. They will KNOW they can win on the road. That momentum will carry us foward to more wins. I think we steal one we "shouldn't" win on paper: I hope it is UTAH, that would be a great going away present.

Nonsense. Nicholls State is THE MOST IMPORTANT game of the year. A loss in that game and the season is down the drain.

Every week is the most important game of the season. If we start out bad, the rest of the season does not matter. If we start out strong, the games that get us 6 or 7 wins and a bowl bid are the most important games.

I know DeWayne Walker will be up to play us since he was reportedly really pissed we didn't hire him. Still, last year NMSU averaged <12 ppg. To put it another way, they were just awful. Further, although it's at their house, we will already have a game under our belts whereas it will be the opener for them and they will be starting a QB with zero DIA experience. So one thing I fully agree with Steve on is there should be no excuse for losing to them. To rehabilitate L.A. Aztec's former mantra, don't tell me Aztecs, show me.

Of course, there is still that small problem that, without looking it up, we've won one road game in 2 years, and anyone on the field will have won a grand total of 3 or 4, and two of those are to CSU (I think those are all correct). So, playing confidently and gaining momentum is the most importnat thing and I think that game is insanely important to the season, and, that is sad.

The next game is always the most important game. Having said that, although I would love to defeat Utah I have no illusions about it. We should lose that game in spades, and if we play decent I'll be happy. A win would be way off the scale. Our big games are against the little sisters of the poor, Nicholls St., Utah State, New Mexico State, Colorado State, Wyoming and UNLV. We essentially have to go undefeated against the teams whose class/talent level we match. Let there be no mistake on this, any wins above these six teams should be considered one heck of a step forward as contrasted to something that is in the realm of probability. I know some of you think AFA is a toss up, but until I see a win against AFA on the board I will be constrained to predict it as a loss. Meanwhilst, the heck with Utah, lets go undefeated in our "conference." The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

We are simply miserable on the road the last few years. NMSU will therefore not be easy. Still, Steve is correct that a loss would be inexcusable. (Well, barring something super extraordinary like half the team being out with the flu.)
