Reading this article about the per seat cost of building the football stadium got me thinking of creative ways to finance ours. www.lasvegassun.com/news/2011/feb/08/proposal-emerges-build-three-stadium-complex-downt/Would people on here be willing to do something similar to what BYU did when they expanded their stadium? A one-time cash contribution (licensing fee) let's say 5-10k. An annual Aztec Club donation (the lowest donor level). The annual cost of each seat. If you did this you'd own your seats for life in a new stadium and you'd be able to transfer ownership once. If we got 20k people to commit to that at say 5k, that would be a cool 100 mil. Thought?

Love the idea of seat licensing...the only issue I see is the fact that we have had trouble getting 20,000 people to pay $5 for the rights to a seat for 3 hours...let alone $5k for life!
I would do it!!

Considering we can barely get 20,000 people to come to our games, 20,000 mid-level donors might be a stretch. But a new stadium is realistic. The way this gets done is through a massive capital campaign. Small donations would help, but they key is finding some big money guys to step up. Maybe charge $20 million to name the stadium. Another $10 to name the field. Another $5 to name the pressbox tower. How about Ron Fowler Field at Barona Stadium? Also, if the department starts turning a profit in the next couple of years, it might make sense to start pumping money into an endowed fund set aside for a new stadium. I think if the city deeds SDSU half the Qualcomm site, SDSU could find a way to build a slightly larger version of this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InfoCision_Stadium_%E2%80%93_Summa_FieldI'm sure Sterk is already making plans. Dr. Weber was very wise to hire a fundraiser as the new AD. The future of SDSU athletics is as much about development as what happens on the field

Another possibility to explore would be a partnership with another tenant (this is assuming the Bolts bolt, of course). I'm just talking out of my rear here, but I wonder if Major League Soccer might have interest in putting a 35,000-seat stadium within 20 miles of the Mexican border.

You are stuck with the Q until at-least 2020
Aztecs need to build their football fan base (at-least triple the current public season tickets)
Conferences need to stablize
governmental agencies need to get thru the current labor/pension budget issues
We all agree - SD needs a new modern Football/Soccer stadium
As for seat licenses etc ..... dream on - SD isn't that type of town Aztecs do not have that type of base - maybe in 2015 but not now.

UNLV is gearing up.
They are about to make a light-year leap in terms of facilities, no matter how it all goes down.

All State has to do is implement a $100 Fee per semester until the bonds are paid for.
30,000*100*2=$6,000,000
So a $150M stadium with a very conservative $20M in naming rights for 20 years and $30M in private donations would mean that the Facility fee would be in place for 16 years.
It is how Cox was built.

Don't think we can sell PSLs on a widespread level. The right stadium, plan, and winning going into it, and we might be able to get enough long term suite sales, PSLs on 21st century club seating and a big enough corporate sponsor to make a sizable dent into the cost. Like usual, it would come down to a student fees increase, 30 bucks a semester is 2 million a year, the q land would likely be purchased with some of the money in one of the other funds. It's doable, but sDSU needs to win and be attended.

It is how Cox was built. Except the fee was $47 per semester and the students also got a huge rec center, and parking garage out of the deal. $200 per year just for a football stadium is way too high. If the fee were lower, say $25 bucks per semester, it probably makes more sense and doesn't put an undue burden on the students.

I think once California's budget shortfalls are addressed, the students will have been soaked enough.
Plus, even in a state like California, it is possible to build a nice college stadium for less than $100 mil. Akron (in the land of union labor) built its new digs for $62 mil.

SDSU is still one of the best deals in the country. Though, even in the last decade the price sure has gone up. Inbetween my first and 2nd semester they sent us a check and I think it dipped under a grand, that was 10 years ago.

Akron v San Diego. Check your relative prices for ANY piece of developed land, residential or commercial.

This is a topic that just won't go away. Lots of obstacles lie in wait for anyone who tries to bring it off, but if you do not try, it will never be built.
Notice that in the Wikipedia article it mentions demolition of existing buildings and eminent domain. We might have to do that here, but it could be done.
I would like a new president who, upon taking office, declares that one of his top priorities is to get an on-campus football stadium built. The project requires that kind of top level leadership. If the new prez is indifferent or downright hostile, forget it!
(The the Chargers are able to sucker the city into building them a new stadium, we will never get one of our own.)

I am in favor of the stadium being on the West Campus. Which will be located at the corner of I-8 and I-15.

I am in favor of the new stadium at I-8 and I-15 too.....especially if it costs SDSU $1 per year to rent like the deal in Vegas. Not sure how realistic it is to expect the City of San Diego to donate that property to SDSU but that would be the ideal situation if you could finance a new stadium. But it's doubtful you could finance a new stadium if the Chargers leave SD.

The SDSU Mission Campus: mission revival stylee, a mission or step pyramid facade, MLS team the Incas share the stadium, a research park, a 'river' front park, the city or UNy sells the northwest portion to help fund it

Lots of good ideas. Keep on winning and our fan base just might be able to pull this off.
