Some of this I'm sure has already been covered on other threads, but I was too depressed to post last night... Jimmer's amazing. State played relatively good defense on most situations, but I think you have to double the ball out high, rather than have the help defender recover. Make someone else beat you. Jimmer travels. A ton. I'd say he got away with at a minimum 5 or 6 travels last night. It is what it is, but I'm hoping for some better awareness on that in San Diego. Not the reason we lost, however. Malcolm....where to start. Worst game of his Aztec career. He looked like he was somewhere else. Stupid fouls on Davies twice, and the phantom call on the Fredette three where the game was basically over anyway. Couldn't finish inside numerous times. Just picked a horrible time to have a really, really poor game. Kawhi is going to the NBA. Beast. Savage rebounder. He will be missed. Played his heart out last night. Just wish he could get rid of this flu that constantly seems to plague him. Zone was effective, but if the Aztecs had converted numerous layups off pretty good interior passes, the final score would have been a lot different. Malcolm alone missed 8 or 10 points right under the basket. I'm angry, but if there was a game the Aztecs were pegged to lose, this was it. We just couldn't convert easy shots and letting Brandon Davies shoot 88 percent from the field was a dagger. Our frontcourt needs to really step it up big time. BYU's frontcourt is below average, and we were outplayed by them. If we see a dynamic frontcourt in the tourney, we'll have our hands full. There's a lot more I'm leaving out, but I'm returning to my self-therapy session now. I forgot to add - Maybe the most important thing is I believe you learn more about your team after they are taken off a pedestal. Adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it.

In 24 hours all will be well Ryan.
We are the better team, we will win the MWC, and we will go further in the NCAA's than BYU.

I hate to criticize Kawhi, because he had a nice game, but he seems to be the only guy that regularly forces some really bad shots. He had four or five clankers where I was just screaming WTF with his shot selection.
With the talent we have, I would like to see us work the ball for a great shot on every position.

Where has Billy White's offensive game/aggressiveness gone? It seems that teams are now able to double Malcolm more effectively because they don't have to account for Billy to the same degree. What's made the Billy/Malcolm combo so effective in the past is that opposing teams had to pick their poison when guarding the post...double team Billy, Malcolm's open and vice-versa.
Billy seems to be in a big funk, mentally. We really need him to step up and be more aggressive in the post, he's so tough to guard when he wants to be.

Billy is maddeningly inconsistent. That pretty much sums it up.

Billy is maddeningly inconsistent. That pretty much sums it up. He has always had a tendency to disappear and then come back with a huge game. I would like to see him attach the basket a little more when the ball gets in his hands. But to be honest, it also doesn't seem like he is getting as many touches as he probably should. I think we need ot try and work the ball into him a little more. I also think we need to do a better job setting up Rahon for the 3FG - by attacking the basket, getting everyone to collapse in the key, and then dumping the ball out.

Just picked a horrible time to have a really, really poor game. Malcom seemed to not have his legs tonight. The 3 times he fouled defending outside shots seemed to be the result of not getting the elevation he expected. When does Malcom's hand end up at the elbow of the shooter when he tries to block a shot? Malcom would normally be way above the shooters elbow. He also seemed to barely get to the rim on shots that got blocked right at the rim. Normally he is well above the rim coming down - not barely getting to the rim. I wonder if he was 100%.

You could be spot on, Bill. Malcolm just seemed like he wasn't able to finish around the rim.

I don't think there was anything wrong with Malcolm's hops. I replayed several of his misses. Davies got a hand or finger on the ball either as Thomas went up or as Thomas released his shot. It really, really frustrated Malcolm. He didn't get a clean look at the basket until the Zoobs had a 10-point lead. There was always a hand between the ball and the rim.

Fredette was a monster and I give a lot of credit to Davies, Anderson and Hartsock for their interior defense. I think the Aztecs frontcourt underestimated the BYU frontcourt defense. Can't go up soft against those guys. Gotta leap and slam it down.
Anyway, nothing wrong with losing at BYU. Yes, it means that this Aztecs team isn't going to break UCLA's 88 game winning streak, but an undefeated season was really a pipe dream.
However, winning the MWC regular season title is not a pipe dream and remains the goal. Our boys will get 'em back at Viejas (and save ltb). Time to buckle down and win as many of the other tough road games (like UNLV and CSU) as possible.
GO AZTECS!

Great to see two head coaches who don't try to make the game all about themselves.

He should tell those guys the next time they put their hand between the ball and basket, he'll break their wrist when he dunks. That's what Wilt Chamberlain told his opponents.

In 24 hours all will be well Ryan. We are the better team, we will win the MWC, and we will go further in the NCAA's than BYU. It doesn't matter what BYU does in the NCAA's. All that matters to me is that the Aztecs get past the first round. Last night's game only solidified my opinion that Coach Rose is a better coach than Coach Fisher. Jimmer is just one of the latest "toys" that Rose has at his disposal. This isn't a knock on Fisher. I believe Rose is the best coach in the MWC, followed by Fisher, Kruger and Alford in no particular order. Knowing going in that Rose had lost only four home games at Marriott Center during his six year tenure, I knew it was going to be a monumental task for a Fisher coached team to win in Provo last night. Now, as had been mentioned, it's up to this Aztec team to learn/grow/reflect on this loss and figure out what can be gained by it. That means taking care of business against the Pokes, CSU, TCU......and finally, figure out a way to beat the Cougars at home, something they haven't done since 2008. That would be kinda nice.

retired- Looked for you last night. Tried to get over to the Aztec fans, but they were opposite of my seat and they were gone by the time I got there.
So..did you feel "creeped out" by attending a game in the MC? This is a follow up from another thread from a ute comment. Hope you had a good experience and was not treated badly for being an Aztec fan.

Jimmer is unfortunately BETTER than all of the entire College Basketball combined! He single handedly PWNED us and he will single handedly win the MWC and NCAA championships. He will then go the NBA and DOMINATE them even more than Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, etc.

Jimmer is an amazing talent. I wasn't a believer until last night. The dude has some serious game. With that said, I had a couple of observations:
1. The Aztecs really tried to slow the game down and did a fairly good job. One thing that kind of stood out is when you slow down a game, sometimes you forget to stay focus and play hard. I think there were a couple moments (too many for me to take!) where our intensity was a little off.
2. I know guarding Jimmer is tough, but feel that DJ had his hands full and I would have liked to see another man guard him. DJ was getting screened leaving some room for Jimmer to work with and he had the advantage. I thought Tapley did a good job on him, Billy did a good job too, I thought possibly bringing in some bench guys to "rough" up Jimmer might have helped get him off his game. He seemed to have his way and it was pissing me off so bad watching, but ultimately...what can you do really? when the guy can shoot with almost no separation from anywhere and make a high percentage of his shots.
I can't wait for the showdown at home in February. It is much better to lose early than late and I hope we learned something for next time.

Just picked a horrible time to have a really, really poor game. The other thing is that Davies kept beating him down the floor while Malcolm jogged back. You're right about it looking like he was somewhere else. There was a lot of pressure on these guys for this game - maybe that had an effect.
