First of all, BYU deserves credit for sticking to their game plan ( give the ball to Fredette and allow him to take all the shots)!
Aztecs Coaching Staff has watched Fredette and BYU's offensive and defensive schemes for at least the last four years. So, why put your weakest defender on the Nation and Conference leading scorer?
And, to add insult to injury, why would you continue to allow your weakest defender guard Fredette after he scores all of his team's points? Why not double-team/trap Fredette and get the ball out of his hand?
WOW! It was a great revelation to put Aztecs best defensive player, Billy White, on Fredette, but it was too late! As poorly as the Aztecs played, they still had chances to win the game.
Hopefully, this game will be a learning experience for the Aztecs players and Coaching Staff because I guarantee you that BYU is going to contend for the League and Tournament Titles!

Fredette's unguardable. Billy did a great job on Fredette for two minutes, then he was so gassed, he asked out of the game.
Jimmer is just a freak. Dude is the best college hoops player (non-big man) I've seen in maybe a decade. Maybe more. Kemba and Sullinger are both very good. But Jimmer is just on another planet.

Nobody on the Aztecs roster and few collegiate players around the country could guard Jimmer. He's friggin nasty!

He's a future NBA pick, you can only hope to contain him at this level of ball.
We did our best.

I think in some other thread I said Jimmer was a human like all of us and he doesn't walk on water, but I think I might have to think about that one and ask him to walk across a lake to find out!

Jimmer was unbelievable tonight, and NO ONE could have stopped him. That said, we had a better option available on defense and we didn't use it.

Trap and Double Team Fredette and watch how many points he score. I guarantee you that he will not score 30!
So, what he passes the ball to another teammate and teammate may or may not score. I would rather watch Davies, Hartsock, Collinsworth, Abuo and Emery take more shots than Fredette!
Its a shame and disgrace for a Coaching Staff to allow team get BEAT by ONE PLAYER!
Note: Each time White and Tapley trapped Fredette, he lost the ball. Note: Each time Fredette had more than one Aztec coming to help on defense, he lost the ball. Bottomline, Fredette is no different than any other player in America. When defensive pressure is applied, he has the propensity to make mistakes and force ill-advised shots!

If we had done anything on offense in the second half it'd have been a lot closer. The guys just looked so worn out from the lack of hemoglobin or whatever. I think it'll be a different story when they come to SDSU.

You are the most uninformed poster on this board and that is saying a great deal. Take your hs point guard knowledge and go away.....

By non-big man do you mean non-guard? I think Jimmer is a great player, but I could come up with a lot of 3's and 4's over the past decade that I would rather have. Unless you're going strictly on PPG.

I don't condone this strategy, although I do believe Gay on Fredette wasn't the right move.

I don't condone this strategy, although I do believe Gay on Fredette wasn't the right move. Fisher is known for doubling the post in the past, I guess Miner wanted to double the shooter. Fershit, Davies & Hardsuck scored enough to win it. SDSU just couldn't shoot worth a cr@p when it counted in the 2nd half. That 9 minute dry spell was something they haven't done for a long while. Gotta get over it and scheme for the zoobs in Viejas.

I don't question our effort but at what point do we double Jimmer every time down the floor? How many points does he score before we change our approach? 30? 35? 40?
At half i was screaming at the tv to have gay and tapley double him and let macolm Billy and kawhi play a 3 man zone. Do you all see how Jimmer centric their offense is? They literally stand and will throw him the ball and just watch. I'd make byus other guys have to have career games to beat us.
We didn't make enough shots to win for sure. But when we doubled Jimmer late he still tried to shoot and took bad shots.
It sucks they are leaving the conference next year without him cuz they will suck without him.
His teammates, at some level, have got to be like "43 points and no assists? Thanks man."
Can't wait to play them here.

His teammates basically don't care that he is the O for the squad. All they want to do is see W's and hang on for the ride.

I think you don't put Gay on Fredette because Gay is a bad defender, but because we need him to run the offense and play virtually all 40 minutes. I think DJ was totally gassed all night trying to keep Jimmer under control, and that was a big reason why he never got much going offensively.
