Deciding which would be better...MWC Tourney or 1st Weekend of the Tourney. Never been to MWC Tourney, but the opening weekend of the tourney is FUN! Great fun sitting in a sports bar (usually they have rooms set up for this) and watch game after game, making a 4 day weekend of it! This is my dilemma as well. I usually do the 1st weekend of the tourney in Vegas but that's because SDSU is usually playing on the other side of the country or not at all. If we're playing remotely close, I'd rather be AT the game for the 1st weekend of the tourney and go to Vegas for the MWC Tourney. Decisions, decisions...

I'm going to the tourney...wife just booked a package via JetBlue for Wednesday thru Saturday...got a great deal! Staying at the Monte Carlo.
The only catch is we got to fly round trip from Long Beach Municipal, but she's got people up there.

A boat load of ATalkers went to Salt Lake City for the opening round against Indiana a few years back. It was a great time (until RW dribbled it off his foot...). I highly recommend it and suspect we will be playing closer to San Diego this year... Wasn't it Brandon Heath?

SDSF, the question to ask yourself is this: What sounds like more fun - watching the opening weekend NCAA in a sports bar or watching the Aztecs live three games in a row live and then storming the court with your fellow fans after our boys win the final? (with KL having a 20-20-5-5 game ) I have never done the NCAAs in Vegas thing, but have done the other twice, and I can't imagine the NCAA weekend idea coming close in comparison...

Also, I have to say, with SD's proximity to Vegas (I fly from Oakland) I have always been disappointed in the lack of turn-out from SDSU fans at the MWCT. Thankfully The Show is always there, which makes up for lack of fan size in Showness :-)

Thinking with how special this year is though, that will change?

Hooters Hotel & Casino around $46 a night for two people. Also might check out Vegas.com for all hotels. Had good luck at both Hooters and at Vegas.com in the past. During last August stayed at Hooters for $22 a night.

There is a pretty good chance that if our boys continue to win just about every game, we'll be in Tucson for the 2nd/3rd round games (i.e. the 1st/2nd round games as they used to be called). Since I'll be in Vegas for the MWC Tournament, I'm not sure I can also head to Tucson the next weekend (sure wish is was Fri/Sun instead of Thu/Sat).
BUT, this may be a once in a lifetime shot for our boys to be a #2 or #3 seed, so I'm going all in. I guess if they are in the Anaheim bracket, I'll skip the first weekend (assuming Tucson) and plan on going to the Sweet 16 in Anaheim instead as I could stay with my Mom in Torrance and the drive is much shorter.

Especially if you're a gambling addict like me. Nothing like throwing a bunch of action down on a bunch of games and cheering like hell with a bunch of strangers for teams you normally wouldn't give a second thought to. I've done it for the last few years and loved every minute.

Don't go to Hooters to watch dying strippers. Since we don't spend time much time in the room, only looking for a place to sleep and shower, the price is right. Don't need a high-end room that I'm not going to be spending much time in. JMO Hell, Motel 6 works sometimes. Going to watch some hoops, not a hotel room. Jeez

I'm going to see where the season takes us -- and depending, I might take the gamble that we'll end up in Tucson. I'd love to be there for that very first March Madness win, but (and I'm not a Vegas guy) Las Vegas is very fun for the MWC tourney.
It's a dillema. I can't do both.

The other thing about MWCT weekend is that it's conf. tourney weekend for everyone else as well, so if it's lack of sports-book BBall games/gambling that you're worried about, you're covered there as well. When Azdick and I weren't at the T&M last year, we were in the sports-book making a killing on parlays

From what I recall, it was basically a bar crawl with a basketball game mixed in for good measure ;D The coolest part of the trip was after we bribed the bartender to keep the hotel bar open waaaaay after hours, when the coaches came down, pulled-up chairs, and just talked like a bunch of buddies sitting around at home about basketball and life in general. Our group will be nearly 20 this year in Vegas and spread out between the timeshare, Bally's and Luxor.

Our group (6) will be at the Hard Rock. We got it for $69/night. That was quite awhile ago but check the rates! It's within walking distance of the arena--no need for a cab or parking.
