think the staff knows it needs a 5 but it is not very easy to get one - they know they are quite valuable and can demand a good amount of NIL money Here's the irony with our player lineup: Out of 11 players currently on scholarships, 55% (6 of 11) are "bigs." Adding one more would push that to 58% (7 of 12), and including a point guard or combo guard would make it 54% (7 of 13). This raises questions about Shay's role on the team. He's been with the Aztecs the longest. Is Heide ready to start at the 5? Will Elijah play the stretch 4, and who will hit the offensive boards? Is Magoon living up to the hype? Will Pharaoh see significant minutes? Majak is a project and will RS. 1. Miles Heide, 6'10" 225 (Soph) 2. Elijah Saunders, 6'8" 225 (Jr) 3. Demarshay Johnson, 6'10 205 (RS Jr) 4. Magoon Gwath, 7'0" 190 (RS Fr) 5. Pharaoh Compton, 6'8"* 225 (Frosh) 6. David Majak, 7'0"* 190 (Frosh) IMO, Demarshay could be looking for a school where he can grow, get minutes, and thrive. This opens up a spot for a big, while we look for a point or combo guard and an up-and-coming wing.

Last season he was mostly on the perimeter to create space for Jaedon down low. We haven’t really gotten to see everything in his arsenal because of how the offense ran last year.

correct as you point out there is very little experience for all the guys listed and who among the group can - defend - rebound - and provide to be player that can block shots and will toss in be able to make FT's
Very limited information about the very new players
IMO Dutcher has told Shay that he would understand if he wanted to enter the transfer portal or he might be the safety valve 13th player in case there are injuries and no guarantee that he will get PT
It is very difficult to manage 11-13 players for PT and keep them happy - last season there were not many laughers where the team won handily and time for PT
Also could toss out there that Saunders seemed to play on perimeter rather then close to the basket - likes to shoot threes even though he had close to 95% FT so maybe give him some PT at the 3
So even though there is an overload there is a need for a true 5 or at least a player who is physical down low that can be a quality player and not draw fouls doing it
also not that easy getting a quality 5 with the NIL money being offered by a lot of quality schools

I wonder what DJ is waiting for? This isn’t to bash him or anything but he just doesn’t have the talent to earn anything other than garbage time minutes here. He’s taking up the spot of a much better player we could bring in. Sometimes things don’t work out. He would fit much better at a lower end Big West school. He can’t enjoy just sitting on the bench all season for years on end.

Maybe he is OK not getting the PT but being a scholarship player at a great school that has a top 20 basketball program is enough for him. I don't think Dutcher will push him out and he can still help the team as a scout team player - think of him in the Cade Alger role at worst.

I don't think Dutcher will push him out and he can still help the team as a scout team player - think of him in the Cade Alger role at worst. Cade, a walk-on playing at Seattle U, contrasts with Shay, a scholarship player with a familial legacy in NCAA Basketball. Shay, having redshirted his freshman year, saw limited action in his initial season, playing just 9 games for a total of 32 minutes, averaging 0.9 points, 0.6 rebounds, and 0.1 blocks per game. His sophomore year showed a marginal increase in playing time, featuring in 16 games for 76 minutes, yet his statistics remained modest, with 0.4 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.25 blocks per game. However, as Shay enters his third season on the court for the Mesa, his prospects dim. With a mere 108 minutes of playtime across 25 games, and the emergence of younger players like Heide, Saunders, and Compton, alongside freshman talent, Shay's future appears uncertain. The presence of two 7-footers further compounds his predicament, casting doubt on his ability to secure any significant playing time.

I know that Shay gets a great deal of crap on this site. Sometimes, it is tough to read because none of us really know the situation other that what we see. I hope he comes back and just crushes it for us next season. I hope the light turns on and it becomes clear what needs to be done. He really put in the time last off season and lost the weight. It might have hurt other areas of his game by losing all of that weight.
Now, maybe this off season we will see another big transition. If he figures out that shot, puts in the work, strong off season workouts, etc. I am hopeful he can come in next season and get some minutes.
We have seen some Aztec players make huge jumps from season to season. I would really like to see Shay added to that list. He just needs to work on so many things, but gotta have faith.

Next year will be his fourth, perhaps he will finish is degree at State and then move on for his red-shirt grad transfer year.

He’s been in the program for 3 full years and his shot is as bad as it’s ever been. Zero improvement in that area. The amount of improvement in that area would need to be incredible. I’m a realist…he’s just not gonna turn into a useful player over the course of 6 months for us with so little improvement over the prior 3 years. The fact that the coaches never talk about him, Zeigler never mentions him, should tell us he’s really not even much of a factor in practice.

Shay also likely isn't going to get any money at another program, so because we divvy up the pie amongst all scholarship players, he not only would be leaving a place he probably loves and has great relationships for a new place with new people and leaving his decent NIL money behind (for someone who doesn't get much playing time). As others have mentioned, playing times is just one part of the equation, there could be 4 or 5 other elements that make riding the bench at SDSU acceptable. I would love to have the extra scholarship, but I don't expect Shay to leave.

Fans urging or pushing for players to transfer out is so tacky. Maybe he wants a degree from SDSU. You need players that don't play much and that are okay with it.

What is everyone talking about with this player? Scholarships are year to year and need to be evaluated every year.
If this program is going to continue to improve year after year and stay in the top 25 they can not have players that add NOTHING to the program year after year. I fully understand that not everyone is going to be a five star stud but on the other hand players need to be able to improve and contribute at the D1 level.
This player that people are talking about has not shown the type of progress or improvement that is needed to play at the D1 level while being in this program for three years. There are little to no signs of anything changing anytime soon so it is time to make other plans. I hate to say it but this program needs to cut its losses and move on and make other plans with this scholarship.
This is not a church league playing for Blue Ribbons and Participation trophies, this is Big Boy D1 basketball, people please don't forget that!
---(going back a few years here, "Mans game Bitch")
Do you want this program to progress or worry about keeping a player on bench that will never play any useful minutes.
Nobody is really ripping the guy, they are just stating facts about not being up to the level of play that is now needed to play on the Mesa, remember this is not a bottom of the barrel, cellar dweller team any more, this is a top 25 program and not everyone is able to play at or progress to this level.

Only the player and the staff know. There are a few schools of thought: Coaches can decide not to renew an athletic scholarship (many power conferences adhere to this), or per the NCAA coaches can pull for 4 reasons including: 1) a student-athlete's voluntarily quitting the team, 2) engaging in serious misconduct, 3) providing false information, or 4) suffering from a disabling injury. As far as we know Shay is in good standing.

NIL and unlimited no-sit transfers has made a player’s commitment to a school a 1 year proposition, so why shouldn’t it be a 1 year proposition for the school as well?

as of today Dutcher has 2 scholarships to use ( 1 from Parrish and 1 from Cade Alger ) think that Dutcher is looking for an experienced 5 and a guard that can score / hit his three point shots
if Lamont leaves then there is a need for a PG to replace Lamont
Dutcher normally wants to have a squad of 8-10 guys in the rotation - Shay is similar to Cade Alger - a player that might not expect to get PT unless there are blow out games
Although he could be a big body if absolutely needed down low -
He is not the major worry getting a quality 5 - ( use cade's scholarship )
Getting a quality shooting guard is the other need ( use Parrish's scholarship )
So if that can happen you have 13 scholarship players - as mentioned Shay is the safety valve - not really going to need to play so now you have 12 players to manage PT
Would any one be willing to red shirt or --- might need to get 2 players - is the in coming HS 7 ft going to ? or anyone else do not know about Taj's ability to be a solid contributor or might ?
If Dutcher has 2 red shirts then he has 10 guys for the PT - and Shay
Shay is not the worry here it is getting the quality 5 and getting a quality 3 point shooter / scorer
If SDSU can not get the quality 5 - then Shay could be a needed player
He does have to make a decision if he wants to enter the portal by May 1
But the focus is getting the quality 5 and shooting guard

It's incredible how many high-profile transfers Indiana has landed. They just landed Ballo. I get the money part, but their program has underachieved for years. They stink every year.

For those wondering why the coaching staff hasn't reached out to certain players. It would be a waste of time for all involved.

I would guess that SDSU does reach out to the better players in the Portal BUT if they do not show any interest in SDSU then the coaches are not likely to spend time chasing someone who does not want to be at SDSU .
So SDSU has to concentrate on guys that have responded yes to the Coaches that there is some type of interest
some may not want to believe it but there are still numerous guys that know there are schools with a lot of NIL money - and to a lot of players a good amount of NIL money is quite important
Not everyone wants to be an Aztec and or play a lot of defense
