From Rivals: basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/i-ve-got-five-on-it-mid-major-bound-prospects-that-will-impact-the-sport?ga_source=cmThe Mountain West is barely a mid-major league these days, but, whatever you decide to call it, the conference is about to add another high-level player in Compton, who possesses high-major ability. Ideally, the 6-foot-6 power forward would be a couple inches longer, but his broad-shoulder build, impressive footwork and soft hands allow him to play larger than his height. Compton is a throwback of sorts, and his physicality and ability to dunk any pass he catches deep in the pain makes him a weapon. He impacts games on the boards in a major way but could stand to develop more as a defender and rim-protector. As he does that, he could become an extremely dangerous weapon for San Diego State.

The fact that he's only 6'6 but can dunk everything including just standing verticals shows how athletic he is and how long his arms are. Usually dudes who are 6'6 can't dunk the way he does in his highlight reel. I'm really excited to watch him play

believe in the report / under the picture that he might be 6'8"
He was a nominee for the McDonald's HS All American games but missed the final cut - so could have an extra effort to show them they missed out

Next year our front court might be the strength of the team. Gwath, Heide, Saunders and now Compton. If Waters stays for another year I think we can be a top 10 team. BJ Davis and Byrd will have to do some heavy lifting though. With all the guys graduating we'll also need to get some depth.

there is still a lot of basketball to be played this season and the HS recruits will be playing some additional games also
would guess that Waters and Parrish are going to be needing an additional year before they are ready for the NBA - so they could turn pro at some level but could be playing at SDSU or a different school if they want more NIL money
Things are very difficult to predict these days with NIL and transfer Portal
Would any of the recruits for next year red shirt or others from this year ?
Is Butler really ready for NBA ?
As some have said do the Aztecs add an experienced player or players from the Portal or do some players from SDSU feel they need to transfer out ?
way too early to make all the decisions

We have had three solid recruitment seasons for incoming freshmen. We will have both Saunders and Heide to play the 4 next year (Heide likely plays both the 4 and 5) Does Compton have the shooting ability to play the 4? I expect Parrish will return.

I’ve seen absolutely nothing from Heide this year to suggest to me he will play any 4

I’ve seen absolutely nothing from Heide this year to suggest to me he will play any 4 Yeah, I think Heide is in a great spot at the 5. Not a college PF, IMO. But he's a frosh, maybe his lateral quickness and outside shot improve to the point where he can also play the 4.

I’ve seen absolutely nothing from Heide this year to suggest to me he will play any 4 We will have two 7 footers on the roster, though Majak is supposed to be able to play the four. Heide is getting significant minutes as a freshman. I recall hearing that he shoots outside fairly decently so with a year of being in the program he should be quite a bit better next year. Dutch said, about D1 big men, that they have to learn to play more physical than they were in HS where they are generally quite a bit larger than most. I think up front we will be pretty deep. I believe Parrish and Pal have one more year should they choose to use it. Where we will have issues is a guard. BJ Davis isn't getting minutes and, unless Butler decides to do one more year, but we will be pretty young there unless we get someone out of the portal, which will likely be an emphasis.

If I'm in a one-in-one situation and he's in, I'm fouling him. Hell even with the double bonus

Little doubt that if SDSU had been able to get a decent 5 from the Portal Heide would have red shirted - even could assist Saunders
Yes Heide does need assistance at FT shooting and being able to avoid fouling opposition - usually guys make a large growth in development between their first and second year of playing .
SDSU will have the tall player red shirting this season . Also the 3 HS players coming in - who can make the transition from HS to college ? Then figure out what players use their Covid season to return ? At SDSU or for Portal Money ?
Numerous moving pieces

How much he will is anybody's guess.

think this is Pal's 5th season - so doubt he gets another year
IMO Parrish and Waters have an additional year - question could be are they going to be looking for big NIL money
another person who could get an additional year is Butler - have no clue if he would even consider coming back - all depends on how this season goes and if the NBA feels he has improved from what they suggested
Totally agree that Heide seems to be a 5
Coaches should have a guess on how they see the 7ft current red shirt and maybe how the HS players fit in - the HS 7ft player is he a true 5 and would he be better playing or red shirting
Would think Gundo might come up with some stats on the HS players

Davis has potential, but lacks experience. He'll need a backcourt mate. Byrd has great all-around talent, and can bring it up the floor on occasion, but I see him as more of a wing.

Totally agree that Dutcher will bring in an experienced and hopefully, tall guard from the transfer portal. I think going from never playing to running an offense would be too much of a leap for Davis. And if Byrd were to run the offense full-time, we might see a new record for TOs, although there would be at least a half-dozen Sportscenter Top Ten passes that season.
