Curious as to the corresponding roster move. Suarez to the 60. Nothing earth shattering.

De-butt was seriously marred by a very stupid base running decision with the game on the line … tough game, baseball. The 97.3 guys were talking about that this morning and someone mentioned that in the minors he's been actually encouraged to steal 3rd with 2 outs...and how stupid that is to teach a young player such bad habits when that's just going to bite you in the @ss in the bigs (i.e. MUCH better pitchers/catchers/3rd baseman).

I get that he probably thinks his role is to bag bases, but you're right. You just can't make that third out at third base.
I'm still not sure if he went on his own or just exactly what happened to make him take off. Certainly, in that situation you'd better be 110% sure you've got something on the pitcher that you KNOW will allow you to take that base. And even then…
… with TWO OUTS?!?
I'd have thrown him and his first Major League Hit baseball on the next Greyhound Bus headed south on Interstate 25 to Old El Paso last night.
(Probably why I'm not in charge…)

Melvin took responsibility for the sloppy play last night, a welcome change from recent past.

But again, that's why someone like Melvin makes the big league bucks…

I love the IDEA of Melvin but I'm not impressed with the way this latest swoon is being handled. Not sure what he should do but they're playing undisciplined baseball and the lineup order and makeup is all over the place and different every night.

As the 97.3 guys pointed out on the radio this morning, you put any other MLB manager at the helm and the record is most likely the same. Managers can only do so much, PLAYERS have to produce.

If the guys really said that exact thing, they're crazy. How a manager uses his bench and pitchers can be a very big part of things. Which players do better with a pat on the back and which ones respond better to a kick in the ass? Yes, players are the most important factor but do you really believe that Jayce Tingler and Bruce Bochey would have the same record with the same players?

They were talking about this Padres team specifically - and they were all in agreement that Melvin is NOT in any shape or form the current problem with this team - and that no current other MLB manager (they used Dusty Baker as one example) would have made a difference in more wins at this point.

The problem with the Padres is all of their hitting prospects stink at the MLB level. Tatis is the only guy in the past 10 years to get called up and produce. Maybe you can put Renfroe, Reyes and France into the decent column, but they were traded. It’s been like this for years, well before the AJ Preller era.

They trade a lot of prospects before they can get up to the big league level in lieu of more established talent, too.

Eventually the farm system is going to get a “not ready for prime time” stigma, devaluating the entire system. I’m certain this isn’t unique to the Padres, but many of their guys get a call up, go 3-22 and get sent back to the thin air of El Paso to wonder what happened during their brief cup of coffee.
