Yeah, love what I read about Salas. Very bullish on him. There are people inside the organization that believe Salas is the best catching prospect they've ever evaluated and that he could be here in three years. And they genuinely believe it.

Is Salas really a 5 tool catcher? He has legit speed? That I don't know. But his floor is stupidly high thanks to the defense and the bat is really good, too.

If his bat is as good as advertised you will want him in the lineup every night. Which makes you wonder - would you play him at catcher for 2 out of 3 games in a series and at a corner outfield spot for one game in a series? Or does he just end up being the DH one game each series?

MLB Pipeline's top 50 international prospects list is out.
Leo De Vries is #1.

The buzz on de Vries is deafening.
He signs Monday for a bonus in excess of $4M.

Assuming Preller is around long enough, who gets traded first--Salas or de Vries?

The only thing that's funny is the overuse of this material. It's tired. Salas is looked at as one of the most untouchable assets in baseball across the industry. This isn't four or five years ago. He's an organizational building block on a team that is going to see dwindling payrolls in the next handful of seasons, very much needing cheaper assets that are under team control. I would be more in expectance of an extension. De Vries has been pegged by multiple industry pundits now to be *ahead* of where Salas was when he signed. He's ranked higher. For a team that is going to need a shortstop to replace Bogaerts in the next three or four years, I don't see him being moved, either. Those days aren't going to be as common as they have been. There's going to be a completely new emphasis on player development of in-house prospects.

Preller is 636-720 in the 9 seasons he has been here (excluding the end of 2014, which he had nothing to do with), and has qualified for the playoffs 2 times--one of those in a 60-game season. With Preller's biggest supporter sadly gone, I suspect Preller is on a short leash, while trying to crawl out of a financial hell that he had a hand in creating. He can keep finding these gems in the Dominican, or wherever else he finds them, but it just is not translating to long-term success at the major league level. Preller remaining is the main reason I did not renew my season seats, and I'll be quite content going to an occasional game in the next few seasons, but I am done being a season seat holder for this club as long as Preller is the GM.

Good points. People can get excited about an international signing or two, but when they're either traded, or never end up helping you get to your ultimate goal, then it's really disappointing, and deflating. It's hard to get real excited for those signings when a lot of times they end up being meaningless for the Padres.

More power to you, but if you're making decisions based on who the GM is, he has a boss.

You would know better than I, but I don't think his boss has been the same for the entire length of his employment.

Structure of ownership changed, but the principal parties involved have been the same for his entire tenure.

I'm still excited, but cautiously optimistic that the signings will end up helping the Padres themselves win a world series in one way or another.
