Potential lineup:
2B Ian Kinsler LF Wil Myers 3B Manny Machado 1B Eric Hosmer RF Renfroe/Reyes CF Cordero/Margot SS Luis Urias C Austin Hedges
If Renfroe, Cordero, Margot and Urias continue to improve the Padres may have something here. Tatis will be waiting in the wings.

I choose to wait and see how Machado’s on the field attitude affects the locker room of a young team. Remember, he’s the guy who was quoted last year that hustling to first base was something that was not all that important to him! Not very encouraging as far as I’m concerned. I’m sure I’ll get jumped on for this but it’s something I wonder about with him signing a 10 year contract. And, now that he has all this money, will he put out like he’s capable of doing?

Hosmer can opt-out after 2022, and if the reports are correct, Machado can opt-out after 2023. If the Padres farm system does indeed develop a good first and third baseman, Hosmer and Machado opting-out may not be such a bad thing.

Machado came up as a shortstop but played third most of his career in Baltimore because of need. He's an outstanding defensive third baseman. He could play Short Stop if needed, but with Tatis on the horizon I am sure the Padres are looking at him as a third baseman longterm.

His advanced metrics were pretty poor at SS last year, but he is a terrific 3B.

Geez. Even I didnt know this...
"Machado's 175 career home runs is 12 more than the Padres' all-time franchise leader, which is Nate Colbert, with 163 -- the lowest total for any active franchise."

And, now that he has all this money, will he put out like he’s capable of doing? www.mlb.com/news/manny-machado-deal-with-padres/c-304157722Machado created some unwelcomed headlines during the National League Championship Series, telling FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, "I'm not the type of player that's going to be 'Johnny Hustle,'" responding to criticism about not running hard on the bases. Machado clarified the comments in November during an exclusive interview with MLB.com. "When I was asked that question, I was definitely on the defensive, and I was wrong to answer it the way that I did, because looking back, it doesn't come across how I meant it," he said. "For me, I was trying to talk about how I'm not the guy who is eye wash. There's a difference between fake hustle for show and being someone who tries hard to win. I've always been the guy who does whatever he can to win for his team. "But I know how I said it and how that came across, and it's something I take responsibility for. I look forward to talking with each GM and owner that we meet with about that, or any other questions they have."

Ryan Leaf attitude with Jack Clark, Kevin Mitchell, or Gary Sheffield talent will not fly in San Diego

Adrian Gonzalez got close in his 5 years here, as he hit 161, but only 57 of those were hit at Petco Park. Colbert had his 163 in 6 seasons, but he started when the dimensions at San Diego Stadium were 330/375/420, with an 18 foot wall to clear. Colbert hit 72 of his 163 at home.

Now that I have a little more time, here are some more factoids...
Through the age 25 season, Machado ranks 26th all time in baseball history in WAR rankings. The immediate players behind him? Joe DiMaggio, Barry Bonds, Stan Musial, Willie Mays and Lou Gehrig.
Machado is projected for 38.8 WAR over the life of the contract based on current ZiPS projections from FanGraphs. If you subscribe in a typical market that 1 WAR is roughly equal to 9 million dollars (before this free agency slog nightmare) that would create a surplus value of nearly 50 million dollars.
MLB.com's "optimistic projection" for 2019 has Machado at 6.6 WAR, with a 2018 comparison of Alex Bregman. His defensive metrics remain very strong at 3rd base.
Every projected starter by midseason (Tatis over Kinsler) is now under club control for at least 4 more seasons. Eric Hosmer is the elder statesman of the infield now at 29.
Machado has already posted 3 6+ WAR seasons in his career, including last season at 6.2. The average Hall of Fame WAR is 69.0. Tony GWynn is the next player above that divider at 69.2. Machado's career projections now put him just under 73 career WAR, making him a likely Hall candidate.
Some people will have reservations about his hustle and some the antics. I'm definitely one of them. But the fact is you don't get a chance like this to lock up a guy at age 26 and immediately boost your national profile. Padres odds to win the NL West went from 30-1 to 12-1 just based on this move alone. As I've said from the beginning, you're about to see a whole new level of commitment to winning. The farm is about to blossom in a major way. This team is a real threat to compete, very soon.

Well. Let's hope it is really real.
It's done. Fowler and ownership just dont comment on deals until the deal is finished. Machado is in Peoria taking a physical today. Another one tomorrow and the press conference is Friday morning. It's real.
