Very proud of this very classy men's basketball program tonight. In the midst of all the national anthem protests among athletes the past couple of months, our players and coaches stood, mixed in together and linked arms. Black/white, old/young. A great show of solidarity far more meaningful than sitting off by yourself. Without getting too preachy, unity is the only way we're going to solve some of these problems our society is having. The Aztecs showed how that works. Good job, players and coaches. (and, yeah, the game and the dancing kid were great, too)
That about says it all. In my day it was, "united we stand, divided we fall". As the ultimate pragmatist you need only to look at the rise and fall of the Greek, Roman and Egyptian Empires, to get a clue..NO country or nation is invulnerable to divisiveness.
It just eats away. In your day it was probably separate bathrooms and water fountains depending on the color of your skin too so I hope we can all agree we need to leave those days behind.

And I thought the best part of the game was getting a W with no injuries. I need to go back to understanding what's really important at a sporting event I guess.

Agree, and the disrespect to the thousands of lives lost (black, brown and white) that died so we (and Japan, Europe and South Korea) can live in relative freedom and peace.... So the American flag represents only the interests of military activities overseas and any disrespect shown to it is a de facto disrespect of our nation's military? I don't get it. Seriously, I don't. I thought those people died to protect our freedoms, including our first amendment rights -- rights that may or may not include making a political protest in front of the starts and stripes. Not limited to, but includes. Sometimes the big picture is important. BTW not saying they can't protest, just saying they shouldn't in this fashion. Anyway, I will leave it at that (until I see the thread in the political form). Go Aztecs!

I come on this site to read and talk about Aztec sports. If I want to get into politics I'll go to an appropriate political board. Personally I don't care if Aztec players saluted, sat down, or laid face down on the concrete during the national anthem.
Francis Scott Key wrote the words to the song while on board a ship in Baltimore Harbor as British ships shelled Ft Mc Henry during the War of 1812. The tune was taken from and old British pup song of the day.
Burning the flag is perfectly legal despite numerous attempts by the Congress to amend the Constitution. At one time in the 80's 48 out of 50 states had some kind of law that prohibited the desecration of the flag. That was until the Supreme's ruled in 1989 in Texas v Johnson that flag burning is a protected activity under the 1st Amendment, free speech. Congress has tried several other times to make flag desecration a crime, each time the Supreme's have said they have already ruled on this matter.
Just adding this for all of those who are opposed to protest during the playing of the song. That is the big picture, Big Brother!

I think it's stupid that the national anthem is played at sporting events. Why is this even a thing?

Is it really necessary that I hear the national anthem before watching a guy from California beat the holy hell out of a guy from Nevada in an MMA fight?

I too am proud of our guys. I would have been equally as proud of one or all of them if they had chosen to sit during the national anthem in protest of the systemic racial inequality that our country is steeped in. Yawn... Another Kapernut nut hugger. A sporting event is NOT the venue to voice your political KaperNUT nut hugging views. If you want to do that crap march on the street and hope a real american doesn't run your ass over. Secondly where is the best carne asada burrito in North County? Try the barrel in Escondido on Broadway south of Lincoln.

Nobody has cared to take an hour out of their day to read the statistics I posted earlier in this threat? Figures.

Try the barrel in Escondido on Broadway south of Lincoln. Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested 14 times because people said he was protesting too loud, in the wrong place, at the wrong time, in the wrong fashion. If you want to continue the longstanding American tradition of white men and women telling black men and women how and when they should be allowed to nonviolently protest their mistreatment then go right ahead. I prefer to be on the side that empowers people to speak their minds and stand up for themselves in the face of being systemically oppressed.

Personally I like when people sing the national anthem, so it isn't my favorite part of any game unless it is sung.
I don't get worked up about it though.
I don't smoke but I think more people should support prop 64 after reading this thread.

Nobody has cared to take an hour out of their day to read the statistics I posted earlier in this threat? Figures. I've read that article many times-- the data supports that politics officers are more aggressive with people of color. I've read many articles from both sides-- at the end of the day all anybody needs to do is take a serious and honest look inward. Am I a good person? Yes Have I had racial biases towards people in my life? Yes If left unchecked could those biases hurt others? Yes If that unchecked bias is multiplied to a national level is it reasonable to think systems of bias could be created? Yes Having racial bias doesn't make you a racist. It makes you human still evolving out of our tribalistic origins. All people have implicit bias, it allows our brains to not have to thoroughly m analyze every piece of information it takes in. Denying racial bias exists, rejecting the very clear economic, political and social racial divides that pervade our society, or blaming people of color for finding themselves on the wrong side of that divide IS racism.
