the interview in a nutshell. Per Sterk, we are at a disadvantage because of our geographical location. repeated himself 3 or 4 times. i appreciate his straight shooting, but would rather he sound more inviting of the idea. spokesman, promoter of the school...he isnt. he did not sound very positive at all on SDSU being considered.

Because we aren't being considered right now. The BIG XII is looking to add two members & they are not looking west at this time. Our opportunity to become a member of a better conference will come in time. Our best options will be if the BIG XII/PAC 12 expand to 16 or if/when the BIG XII implodes. Either scenario will be good for SDSU. In the meantime we need to be laser-focused on "SDSU WEST" expansion.

He is only telling it like it is presently, and you can bet he has done quite a bit to promote the Aztecs to the BIG XII, PAC 12, BIG 10, and any other P5 conference that would listen. You can only do so much. They know who we are, and what we have accomplished, but you can't force them. If, you get too pushy that can turn them off also, and then no one wants to deal with you. The best thing we can do for ourselves is continue to win, and play well along with keeping our players academics strong.

It was a very cold interview. Smith wanted to draw Sterk into SDSU possibly getting into big 12 and he would not even give it a smidgen of credence. Implied we'd be more likely to get into the PAC 12, which is also a dream even if SDSU west becomes a reality. Yes, our current situation is lousy in this lame conf. But we just have to dominate and make the best of it until the landscape changes.

So we just throw up the white flags?
Nothing will change, until something is done.
I bet we could make more money in the big west considering all the costs.

Our best gambit is to team with UNLV and bust the doors down to P12 membership.
UNLV is going to build a stadium on the strip, along with the Raiders/Adelson. They are already in the process of doing their own expansion onto land west of their campus that may include a medical school.
SDSU will expand west and build a stadium, too.
The two massively upgraded schools will be irresistible to the P12 in about 3 to 5 years.

The Aztecs need to be the best school outside of the P5. They need to get invited to the New Year's Day bowl game 2 out of every 3 years! They need to do this for the next 4 out of 5 years or the next 4 out of 6 years!
Fast forward 5 or 6 years......
The big 12 will then come calling when we really don't need their money (because of all the big paydays we have already received playing in New Year's Day bowl games 4 of the last 6 years). My $0.02

As SD and Cali residents, we need to lobby our politicians to change the state mantra of not allowing CSU schools to award doctorates. That would level the educational playing field and would eliminate a huge hurdle in getting into the P12. Wouldn't hurt our B12 admitance possibilities either.

To begin with every school in the PAC does NOT want SDSU to be elevated to P5 status , it would really improve our status for recruiting and dramatically hurt theirs especially the lower rated schools - NO school in the PAC wants that . Sterk is a realist , he tells the truth as told to him by other AD's . Many people prefer a cheer leader style , he is not .PAC is NO as of now there is No reason for them to expand to G5 schools. No matter what or how any one tries to spin it .
B12 , will decide if It wants to expand , their goals are basic making sure it gets teams into the playoffs . So if it expands it will be up to 12 for at least the short term . Also will watch to see when the playoffs expands to 8 teams. All schools make more Money with play off expansion then going to more then 12 teams . Sterk has submitted the SDSU resume and it is up to B12 to decide what is important to them . Among the 10 current schools there are different groups , the lower level teams want to add other lower level teams so they can win more games and get into Bowl games , WVU wants a travel partner for MBB games ,so may ISU . Sooners just want 12 teams because the name is B12 . Most of the others want schools that can bring them more TV money - so schools that expand the TV marketing base - this is where we have our big push that Sterk has stated getting B12 into CA for TV and also Recruiting to improve the teams . Will the TV networks have a suggestion - would guess if B12 wants more TV money .
What San Diego politicians are you saying have any clout in the State of CA . ZERO .
IMO . Get the actual results from the B12 meeting . Not bloggers . Improve the football team on the field , increase the fan base go out to communities , increase TV ratings in San Diego , the strongest case to present to the TV networks .
So get actual results from B12 . Then explore AAC if B12 is not an option . Indy is not a reality BYU is having problems with it and ND has inched toward ACC. AAC has locked up members going to a New Best of Lot conference by having 10 million dollar fee to leave . So take good strong look at AAC West Division or stay with the MW/ BSU driven football conference

Sterk is the best AD we have ever had, by a large margin.

Sterk is a realist ,that tells it to us straight . Does a lot of the work behind the scenes . Not the guy who is out there politicking for this or that , screaming he can deliver .... some fans want the screamers but then get broken up as it does get delivered . No way can he control what the PAC or B12 will do .

My $0.02 The most important thing above all else that SDSU could do is "SDSU WEST." Winning would be a bonus; particularly with the 50% payout SDSU would get to keep with the MWC bowl contract.
