I don't know the NCAA rules regarding violations nearly as much as some here may, however it seems very strange that TJ would hold up a clearly branded Adidas shoe if there was zero benefit to him at all. It just seems like a weird thing to do at the time. Sure he was with an Adidas sponsored AAU team, but what motivation would he have to hold up a shoe if there was/should be nothing in it for him whatsoever. I can't help but to think that Adidas may have motivated him in some way to have him advertise the brand for "free" on national television. I wonder if his dad's Adidas sponsored high school team gets an influx of money over the upcoming months/years out of the kindness of Adidas' heart?

I am actually shocked that State would pursue a "Leaf", after the last time around.

NCAA Needs to investigate this. Think I'll send them an email. No, I'll send it to Gary Parrish.

He'll be gone to the NBA before anything substantive ever happens.
Bank on it.

Getting him would've been huge, but not getting him doesn't kill us. We'll be fine

Tough not getting him, but we'll survive. As for the shoe, didn't watch but holding a shoe up isn't a violation by any means unless they're paying HIM to endorse it. Of the 3 finalists, UCLA is the only Adidas shoe, so definitely would tell which school he'd be leaning towards by showing the brand.
The school he really stuck it to via the shoe is up north though, Nike U. Showing an Adidas shoe to a program bought & paid for by Nike...
Can't blame him for his choice or, if it was a factor, supporting his father's & AAU team's shoe contract. UCLA is going to be very, very good, assuming they don't get raided by the NBA.

Actually, if it was discovered that there was a clear "kick-back" to his dad's team (totally unrelated... also sponsored by Adidas) then it very well could be some type of violation... but not attributable to UCLA. At least not directly.

Without getting into the specifics, I feel the dad put enormous pressure on his son to not only decommitt from AZ to go to ucla.
The kid wanted SDSU but his dad forced him to go to ucla.
The dad runs the family.

Think it's more about his dad is getting paid/supported by Adidas so he's supporting dad by giving Adidas extra press, which isn't a violation. Even if there was a kick-back & it's proven, all he'd most likely have to do is pay it back & maybe face a very short (e.g. 1 game) suspension.

The dad runs the family. I get that impression as well. If TJ grew up in El Cajon then his parents have known about "party school" Cal State vs Univ of California. SDSU has come a long way since but it will always be perceived as scholastically inferior. Best of luck to TJ - glad he still gave us so much consideration.

Oh, I don't ANYTHING will ever be proven, that's how deeply and insidiously the shoe companies have infected HS & AAU hoops. But my hunch is that some type of kick-back or quid pro quo was definitely in play.

The dad runs the family. Yup. Let's map this out... Nike: U of Arizona, Oregon, SDSU Adidas: Dad's HS team, Leaf's AAU team, UCLA.

If JR didn't choose an Adidas College there probably would have been hell to pay at home and Dad would have been very uncomfortable.

The picture below tells the whole story. Both dad and brother were wearing an Adidas shirt and the Adidas handler is his AAU coach I believe. He's also holding up and Adidas shoe. What a surprise. twitter.com/byrdyman
