As people here ponder finding that "diamond in the rough" next HC hire on the cheap for our program -- keep in mind that these things matter.

Glory days of UNLV football have been over for decades.

Sure would be nice to have a HC that did some recruiting. Per NCAA rules HC's are really limited in the recruiting they can do. For example, they are only allowed to visit a recruit's home just once.

Now it's starting to make sense. Whatever monies were saved from promoting and replacing, went to Hauck. I don't know how much ST coaches are paid relative to other asst coaches, but he might be Rocky's handpicked successor after he steps down. JMO Hauck received a $400k buyout when he left UNLV, so I doubt we had to pay him too much (if any) extra to take the job. Plus, I think he's a terrific recruiter, so probably less about his role (ST coach) and about how he contributes overall.
Don't disagree he'll be a candidate down the road, assuming the team is doing well overall.
Who did he or his staff recruit at UNLV?

He was the head coach, which made him responsible for everything, and yes being a bottom of barrel recruiter at UNLV and worse than prior UNLV HC's is relevant. He is a awful recruiter.

Well, I can only say that we had BETTER beat Hawaii. If we lose, the season is pretty much a washout, since we are likely to lose at least a couple more conference games. That would mean, assuming a 5-3 MWC record, no winning season and no bowl game. If that happens, I am eager to read posts calling for the retention of Rocky Long. What scares me as much as the thought of a .500 season (or worse) is that the suits on the Mesa will not appreciate how grave a situation that would be for Aztec football. Assuming a 6-6 finish with no bowl game, it's possible (though absurd) to say ... "Well, Rocky has won 38 with just 26 losses, and has gone to four bowl games as head coach. So what if we had one mediocre year? What's wrong with that?"Well, there is plenty wrong with that. I suppose that's what they were saying after Ted Tollner's horrible 2000 season. The trouble is, this is 2015, not 2000. The program needs to be lifted to the next level (meaning at least on a par with BSU) and as soon as possible. We can no longer afford to accept mediocrity. AzWm If we lose at Hawaii we could still finish 7-1 in conference. BTW, why speculate on conversations that haven't happened or may never happen? Well, if we're going to go all metaphysical, why bother to even post here?

I was merely voicing a worst-case scenario should the whole season more or less go down the drain. Keep in mind that SDSU has several times in the last three decades made poor or downright bad decisions regarding hiring. Given that history, I am not overly confident regarding the administration's ability to recognize the need for new on-the-field leadership. If we had won a couple of MWC championships in the past four years, along with Top-25 ranking and perhaps two or three wins over P5 schools (well, we did beat Wazzu), I would probably write off a disappointing 2015 as a one time fluke. The reality is that we have not won championships, we have not earned Top-25 ranking, and we have not won more bowl games than we have lost. In my opinion, we need to move on. As for losing to Hawaii and then running the table for a 7-1 conference record, I have to admire your optimism. Sure, it's mathematically possible. Likely? I don't think so. Beating Hawaii might well set the table for a 6-2 conference finish. Maybe even better than that. On the other hand, I think a loss in the Islands would be very hard to overcome. I see at least two, maybe three, other games on the schedule that will be real challenges. AzWm

We can no longer afford to accept mediocrity.AzWm Prey tell me though ... what can we afford? We are running a debt in terms of football operations and as far as cost per win -- we're doing pretty good (38-26). I would counter that if we want something other than "mediocrity" (7-9 wins per season) -- we have to open up the donor wallets. The base salary provided by the school is already maxed out so ... what can we afford? Money, rather enough money, is certainly the key factor. But so is good judgement. We paid Chuck Long a lot of money, as I recall, but the hire was a bad one in the first place. We can always hope that there is a dynamic young coach somewhere who would see SDSU as a great opportunity to move up from the FCS level. Someone who has a few years as a successful HC and one who will gladly accept a salary of $800,000 or $900,000 dollars a year. Or, we could just keep Rocky Long and hope for the best. I think we are not giving enough thought to one of the most important facts of this case. Specifically, Rocky will be 66 next season. Whether Rocky is fired or retires, we are going to have to scrounge for the money to pay the next coach before too long in any event. It will be put up or shut up when that happens. AzWm

Anyone who wants to hire Hauck instead of one the great candidates that show up regularly when we have a coaching vacancy needs to get their head checked.

with Rocky saying in the UT today DP is better then expected . Could he play - who knows . Line on the game could go up or down .( would guess Rocky may just be tossing the thought out there) Hawaii did lose by 55 to BSU - was it at BSU ? But we have problems on the traveling to the islands and most road games . Game as always depends on who wins the battles of OL vs DL on both sides of the ball and the play of our QB - major ??'s

Anyone who wants to hire Hauck instead of one the great candidates that show up regularly when we have a coaching vacancy needs to get their head checked. Doesn't that depend on how much weight one gives to Hauck's tenure in Vegas? Talk about dumpster fires! Let's not forget that in seven seasons at Montana Hauck compiled a 80-17 record. If he had only coached two or three seasons in Missoula, one might speculate that he was just leading a bunch of good players recruited by his predecessor. Seven years, however, is long enough to make one assume that he knows how to coach as well as recruit. Oh, yes, his average win total at Montana was over 10 games a season! (His team lost in the FCS championship game to Villanova in the last season, by the way.) Even at Vegas he managed to make it to one bowl. I am not saying that Bobby Hauck should be our next permanent Aztec head coach. I do believe that he would be a good interim head coach should Rocky be replaced mid-season. That probably won't happen. In fact, I hope that SDSU wins no fewer than 6 out of the next 7 conference games, extending our consecutive streak of winning seasons and bowl invitations. The Hawaii game should be an indication of whether the team is stagnant or taking off. AzWm

So far I've been more impressed with the Bishop Gorman coach's short tenure at UNLV than Hauck's tenure there.
