In my opinion, this season is the most important season in the history of SDSU football. For the SDSU football program to survive long term they must position themselves for selection in any upcoming expansion to a BCS conference. In past years, SDSU had a subpar (to say the least) program and watched while other programs such as Utah and TCU win their way into BCS conferences. Had SDSU had those type of big winning seasons things would look much different now. Well now is our time! If we are going to succeed as a program we must win now and be a perennial top 25 team. With the Chargers all but moving to Los Angeles, there will be giant opportunity to grab a large size of that fan base to Aztec football. San Diego has proven to support their team if they win (just look at Aztec Basketball). If the team can win the MWC and even more importantly go to a BCS Bowl game the program will create buzz that the city can get behind. This team is stacked with returning defensive players that was a top 25 defense last year. They return one of the best running backs in the nation in Pumphrey. And have in my opinion a solid SEC tested QB that should be able to run the offense and score points. There are no more excuses. At the very lease SDSU should win the West Division. But they need to win the MWC and get into a MAJOR bowl game to really put Aztecs football on the map. There is a very small window RIGHT now to capture the San Diego fan base that will be looking for quality football once the Chargers leave and put our school in position where we cannot be ignored by the upcoming expansions to BCS conferences. Win big starting this year and the sky is the limit for SDSU footaball. Continue with mediocrity and the program will be doomed.

Until next year. And then the year after...and after that. Every year is important, but so is the next one..
Expansion isn't happening for at least a couple years, probably 3-4, the overall strength of our athletic program is very good, and SD isn't shrinking. We're in the mix. A great year this year wouldn't hurt, but one next year wouldn't either.
And then if the Chargers leave next year and we can finally move forward with a stadium solution THAT year becomes critical in drumming up donors and partners.
So yes, this year is important but you could argue turning the program around in 2010 was just as important and there will be more important seasons moving forward.
It should be a fun year!

The way the schedule lines up we should be able to break through 10 wins this year. Catch a break with Cal or Penn State we have a chance to steal one of those games as well. We need a breakthrough similar to basketball's big win on the road vs. Gonzaga a few years back. This roster is a great mix of talent and experience, we need to finally produce on the field this year if we want to see any improvement in the situations surrounding the future of football off of the field.

That is a very interesting statement you made, and I hadn't thought about it that way. True, it can be very important for this program to move up the ladder, and no better way to start than with a great season with some key victories. But, as we all know one season will not do the trick. It should be the start of many seasons of great wins with 10 to 12 victories each season. The main thing we need to accomplish is defeating P5 schools on a regular basis not just once in a while. That of course can be very difficult, and takes a lot of hard work not only by our coaching staff, but the team also. We must bring in all the top recruits we can get every year, and hopefully mold them into a very tough winning team. This is what we hope to do since this program announced that they are working on making the Top 25 a habit every year. So, here we are starting the 2015 season, and we can only go up from here. I look forward to it!

"Important"?
Only if you buy into the hype.
We haven't started playing yet.
Ask again when the season is over.

To me, the most important in the past twenty years was the last year of Chuck Long. Finally, some boosters got so sick of it, they forced the administration to at least act like they cared about the program. If that hadn't happened, I'm not entirely sure we'd have football right now.

I suppose no one wants to go too far out on a limb to support their team... Let place a friendly wager on whether or not the Aztecs will win 10 games...no...on second thought...let's wait until the season is over to place the bet...can't be wrong that way... Heads the Aztecs are big winners and you can say that you've always supported them...Tails and you can say "see I told you so"... Take a risk and stand up to support the Aztecs before it's fashionable and trendy...

The writing has been on the wall at least since Utah and TCU got promoted to P5 conferences that EVERY year becomes the most important in the history of the program. How did 2014 turn out? Well, we played just four FBS schools with a winning record and went 1-3 in those games and we played just two P5 schools, both of which had losing records, and we went 0-2 in those. One would assume that would be a huge red flag for fans yet many here continue to say it was a good year.
My view is that particularly in light of the P5 now becoming noncompliant or whatever the proper term is and officially telling the NCAA they will set their own rules and if the NCAA doesn't like it the P5 will leave the NCAA, another 7-5 season will be just as detrimental as Chuck Long's 3-9 in 2008. More and more, time is of the essence and we simply can't afford to stumble and bumble around again. Not this season, not in 2016 and not in the foreseeable future.

I remember when we were heading into the Preseason Top 25 with Lugie's squad. There was a lot of hype back then.
Honestly, I'm in wait and see mode.

"The most important season in SDSU football history?"
Well, yes... in recent history at the very least. Perhaps not quite 'make or break' but close to it based on the positive and timely impact a 10-win season would have for SDSU.

The writing may be on the wall, but some schools are just gonna be left out for whatever reason.....most will be left out for economic reasons, I am sure winning helps, but the team that gets into P5 will have leaders that can sell the chosen group they can help the bottom line the most. Dollars and sense is what it comes down to.

Me, I just plan to relax and enjoy the season. In much the same way that I have enjoyed the last 40 or so seasons. Anyway, who listens to some guys rant on a message board then changes his perspective on the team? Is anyone really that weak-minded? LOL! Have your own views and see how they works out as the season goes on. It's a game; some would say JUST a game. Enjoy - I know I will.

I 10 wins is a reach too far. Don't buy into the non informed here who assume we have a "cupcake " schedule just because they know nothing about Boise. Colorado state, Utah State. And it is foolish not to know that Hawaii and San Jose will certainly give us a better game at home. Once again I point out that the team that beat Arizona in the FIESTA Bowl lost badly in Colorado Springs in a conf game. It happens every year and in every conference Also agree with sdcoug that Hoke time here steered us back on course and every new year is the most important

My prediction...second column is the overall record of the team from last year. TEAM | +/- .500 | PREDICTION | USD | + | Pick 'em | Cal | - | Loss | So Alab | - | Win | Penn St | + | Loss | Fresno St | - | Win | Hawai'i | - | Loss | SJSU | - | Win | Utah St | + | Win | Colo St | + | Loss | Wyoming | - | Win | unlv | - | Win | Nevada | + | Win |
Hawai'i can always be a bust due to the travel out there...there should probably be one more loss in there to +.500 teams...

If you stroll past AD Sterk's office, you'll find an inscription, on a slab of solder above his door: "I just plan to relax and enjoy the season". Above that is the smiling face of Alfred E. Neuman, with a balloon: "What, me worry?"
