Per the SD UT.com. "Winston Shepard will not attend the second session of summer school, not because he wants a break from basketball but because he is headed to the Philippines on a team sponsored by Athletes in Action."
AIA will play 8 games on the Islands and provide out reach. Coach Fisher approved the mission. The team is coached by Morris Michalski, a longtime coach at NAIA Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn.

I thought you possibly meant that he left the team for pro ball somewhere in the Phillipines. Had me on WTF mode for a second.

AIA will gather in Ohio for a four-day training camp before heading overseas on July 29. Eight games are slated over a 12-day span. The AIA Team returns to US on August 11th. Along with the BB games, AIA BB camps for kids and AIA BB clinics for coaches are held. Children’s hospital and orphanage visits are slated as well. Compassionate aid (shoes, sports equipment, medical supplies, games and food) for the needy will be brought as well.
I think it's good for Shep to mix BB with service. It's going to take some maturity to travel internationally, play ball and help the needy. Good leadership qualities and taking responsibility, while impacting people's lives in a positive way.

Among those participating for AIA are TK Edogi and D’Andre Wright (Tulsa), Eric Garcia (Wofford), Chris Hass (Bucknell), Javis Howard (Charleston Southern), Greg Lewis (Rutgers), Tyler Lewis (Butler), Tyrell Nelson (Gardner-Webb), Winston Shepard (San Diego State), and Andre Yates (Cleveland State.)
Shep by far is the most talented player and from a Top #25 school.
Check that Tyler Lewis was aMcDonald's All-American and signed at NC State before heading to Butler.

This is a short term missions trip, not a basketball clinic for lottery picks. It's hardly news worthy. Good for Winston going though, I'm sure it will expand his perspective on the world. I'm sure he'll see a lot of heart breaking poverty, its amazing how good we have it here in the states.

It's not about the level of competition or basketball, it's really about helping others. For Shep who wants to go and for Fish who thought it would be good for him, I applaud both of them.

All for it. He doesn't need to be here. He knows the drill at SDSU. See the world a little. Just stay out of trouble, and don't get hurt.

What a beautiful life choice. This young man continues to impress me. Way to go WS III. I'm enjoying being an armchair witness to his collegiate journey. Go Aztecs.

I'm actually going to be in the Philippines during that time. I'm going to have to bring my SDSU swag see if I can catch one of his games.
Can't wait! - Bart Scott

Congrats to Winston! Great opportunity, and something he'll never forget. I have a friend who played AIA (& still does occasionally) & made several trips internationally, and he's said those experiences can never be topped. Very happy for WS for getting the chance, and for his life choices. Very refreshing in this day & age! An Aztec we should be very proud of.

Definitely enjoying seeing Shep grow into someone we can be proud to say is an Aztec For Life. From someone who made some bad decisions as a freshman to what he's becoming is really inspirational.

he wants a break from basketball. on this break he will be playing basketball. makes sense. I thought the same thing....then realized he must have meant a break from the usual scene and try something akin to a mini-vacation. Hope that 4 day camp teaches him how to shoot! (Slight dig, but joking mostly.....I do wish he developed a reliable jumper and strong moves around the hoop). With his God given body perfect for basketball I would like to see a "beast-mode" arise from his game. He can take over a game once he decides to.

Mr. Shepard is becoming a very fine young man! His leadership ability is growing leaps and bounds! This will be a life experience that Winston will look back upon the rest of his life. The Aztecs are lucky to have such a good kid on their team.

There should, by now, be no question about this kid's character.
Game wise? He's got one year left to turn himself into an NBA prospect, and the chance is there. We've all seen the flashes, I'm hopeful (not confident, quite yet) he comes out as '15 MW Tourney Shep all year and shuts down like half this board's BS...

I'm glad Winston has a passion for this and I have no doubt the experience will do him good, not only on the court but especially in life off the court.
