I am often amazed at the human mind's ability to except just about anything. The left is using this tragedy in Charleston as a valid pretext to achieve another goal. I hope UNLV tells Senator Reid to suck it. I hope that UNLV leaves the MWC and that Confederate battle flags fly only in museums which is where they belong. They were trotted back out and placed in front of some Southern capitals as a response to the civil rights legislation of the '60s. That tells one all one needs to know about why those flags are a problem. They were brought back as a symbol of defiance and racism. That flag is a symbol of racial hatred, slavery and injustice, oh, and of murder and lynching as well. In a way, flying the Rebel Flag is a good thing. It reminds people that if you attack the USA you will get your A$$ handed to you in pieces!!!

I am often amazed at the human mind's ability to except just about anything. The left is using this tragedy in Charleston as a valid pretext to achieve another goal. I hope UNLV tells Senator Reid to suck it. The "left" has wanted the Confederate flag banished basically since Day 1. The left isn't "using a tragedy" to advance some radical agenda. This latest tragedy has just put it back in the forefront as far as mainstream media is concerned. I don't really care about UNLV using the name Rebels as it has a different meaning behind it, but as far as the flag is concerned, I hope the rest of the country tells the Southern bigots to "suck it". Per this quote, I think UNLV long ago addressed the issue from a PR standpoint..... UNLV spokesman Tony Allen said that students led the charge in the 1970s to drop the Confederate-themed mascot, and that the current logo is based on western trailblazers in the 1800's.

What in the hell does Nevada have to do with the Confederacy? Nevada wasn't part of the war of secession. Their "mascot" and name never have made sense. The Nevada Gamblers might make sense. Or the Nevada Escorts. But the Rebels? Rebels without a Clue, maybe. It seems to me that the City of Vegas was originally developed by those who could be called rebels. Rebels to the mainstream of what almost all other cities allow. A rebel doesn't just have to be part of the South and the Confederacy. Besides.... it's just some dude with a white mustache and a lid. www.unlv.edu/identity/mascot

Wish he would start using the treadmill again and get in shape. Would be an inspiration to UNLV. Put fitness first Harry not your mouth.

How about UNLV Hanging "Huevos"? "Huevos" sounds a little like "Rebels", (Huev -oooos, Huev - ooooos) and they need all the balls they can get for their program…

I think the confederate flag is the banner of slavery because each of the states that attempted to secede from the union only mentioned slavery as the basis for declarations of secession. That said, I have reviewed all of the UNLV logos, mascot and various merchandise and I can't find anything that refers in any way to the Confederacy. Therefore, I don't think there is any reason whatsoever for UNLV to change anything. Rebels is a generic term. Was James Dean a supporter of the Confederacy just because he was a Rebel Without a Cause?
Harry Reid is off-base on this issue. (Please don't reply to me saying Reid is always off-base. That is like saying McConnell is always on-base. Neither is true.)

Rebels sounds like Red Bulls. They can share the name with the MLS team and create a new stream of sponsorship.
Then, they won't have to use the money from guys with nicknames like "the Fixer."

They removed the flags to satisfy the PCers and they move on. I'd tell Reid to go pound sand.

They shouldn't need to change their name, but how is being a "Rebel" or any affiliation to the Confederate Army "Rebels" have anything to do with Las Vegas or Nevada?
I don't buy this:
"The rebel mascot originally meant rebeling from the University of Nevada-Reno system"
