Senator Harry Reid is calling on the university of nevada las vegas to consider ditching its sports name, the rebels. elizabeth gadley reports.
(sen. harry reid) "i believe that the board of regents should take that up and look at it." and plenty of current and former unlv students agree. (lexi bradford, unlv student) "i think that's an interesting idea, i think that's a good idea, it's a connection i never really made before but i think it would be a good change." the rebel's confederate tie use to be even stronger today it's hey reb with his big white mustache but the first officials rebel mascot was beauregard, a cartoon wolf wearing a confederate uniform and cap. students voted to banish beauregard in the 70s but they kept the rebels name. some now feel it's time for the rebels to go too. (cesar carvhaal, unlv student) "well with other controversies it's a do, i think it's necessary because there's a history behind the rebel with the confederate flag and yeah, i think its necessary." (elizabeth gadley, reporting) "of the students who feel it's time for a change many also say it will be hard to see the runnin' rebels and hey reb go." (cesar carvhaal, unlv student) "this has been for over 50 years it's been the mascot for unlv and i think it will definitely be a huge impact on the school but i think it is necessary." plenty of other want hey reb to stay. they feel the confederate link was severed back in the 70's when beauregard was given the boot. (torri hinkey, unlv student) "i feel like you know people are too nit picky when it comes to mascots, especially with the unlv one, like there's , i don't think it offends anybody." -----end-----cnn.script-----

All Reid is doing is piling on because of that racist punk who murdered all those people in the church. That gave Reid an opening to pull off this PC shit. It's already morphing into the NFL Redskins name again and yes, maybe it'll reopen the wounds concerning our Aztecs. Has he nothing else to do?

Hmmmm -what about Ole Miss Harry? Seems a lot closer to the heart of the matter than UNLV. It's a reflection of the reality that, when all is said and done, we are a country that has no idea how to address racism. At a dinner party a while back I referred to the al Qaeda and ISIS as "sand n****rs". You could hear the silent moans in the room. The fact that I might have offended some sensitivities meant nothing to me. I knew I was in a room of white covert racists on so many levels. Which made it all the more humorous when my President used the same word to make a very valid point and comments sprayed out from the peanut gallery. Fact is, if I had a nickel for every time my President has been called a "n****r" by the white trailer part trash, (which he did, in fact mention), I'd have a free weekend in Vegas. Every segment of society has elements on both ends of the social food chain. My President is a man of African Heritage, as is one of the finest guitarists to ever strap a Stratocaster. But there are also those, that are "N-word" appropriate. And as a man of Latino heritage, I'm fully aware of that reality. So as this clueless country starts the "sweep", I'm in full agreement that the "Stars-n-Bars" belongs in a museum, not in public venues. On the one hand, what took so freaking long, on the other just where does one draw the line. When I moved to theATL, there was talk of changing the Georgia State Flag, removing the Stars-n-Bars, as controversial as the topic was, one of the inducements was for the NCAA to threaten pulling the final four if the State didn't capitulate to an acceptable change. That much of America I do understand. At the end of the day, it's all about the money.

I wonder if some local bands of rebels were offended by the term? Perhaps UNLV should have the ambassador stop by and educate.
Why do they have to get rid of the name? Does STAR WARS need to do some re-branding too? Just adopt the Death Star as the mascot.

We called them Patriots. It makes the politically correct crowd feel good to pile on an opportunity to make what they feel are points with some voters.

With all the things going on in the world and he is worried about UNLV's mascot. Wow, no wonder the country is a mess.

This is dumb...its pretty obvious that the UNLV "rebel" is a rebel against the school(UNR) in the north, not the Old American North.

I completely agree with some of the other posters saying this country is messed up, but much more so because of our sad history, both recent and ancient, of pathetic racist white trash than anything the "PC Crowd" has done to address it. As just one example, the aforementioned Jimi Hendrix never got anywhere with white audiences until he went over to Europe to be "discovered" by the much less racist mainstream overseas. Once he had the 'white stamp of approval' from popular white British rockers, he was actually accepted over here. That's just one of thousands of examples I could come up with in any industry in the US and all walks of life. This thread will now officially end up in the political discussion board - sorry.

In order to avoid offending, all mascots must be made up?
CHECK THIS ONE OUT:
Gorlok: Webster University
What is a Gorlok? From the school’s website: “The Gorlok is Webster University’s school mascot. It is a mythical creature designed in part by Webster students and staff through a school contest. It is reported to have the paws of a speeding cheetah, the horns of a fierce buffalo and the face of a dependable Saint Bernard.” Oh, you nerds.

Lol at an old fart Mormon criticizing UNLV for a nickname allegedly offensive to African Americans. Hypocrisy anyone?
And BTW, the name has absolutely nothing to do with the Confederacy. The name was a backlash against dumbasses in the Nevada legislature who thought the state's flagship university, Nevada-Reno (it's proper name) should be the only school in the state to field teams in major college athletics.
BTW, I'm a registered Democrat. However, that doesn't mean I like fellow Dems like Reid and Pelosi.
