I know that people are already worried that the increased work or competition may cause an injury to Malik. If his leg isn't as strong as it should be, we'd probably find out during the season anyway. Broken bones can actually heal stronger if they're given the chance. They're not like sprained or torn ligaments. That's much more likely to reoccur or cause permanent weakness and instability But the chance to play against the best young talent in the country to see where his game is now and to do it in the rarified air of Colorado, is a great trade-off to me. It's great for the program, speeds up his game way more than scrimmaging at the Jam Center and gets him more ready and aware of that damned thin mountain air. I think it can only be good for him. I was going to post earlier in this thread, but this post covered the subject as well as it could be done. The two main points, 1) if his leg can't hold up for the U19 competition, he won't make it very far into our season and 2) the extra practice, games and competition can only help him.

I do not like the fact that Malik is taking part in this because if he did get injured it would ruin our season. It is not like it is the actual mens usa basketball team so it is unnecessary. I'd much rather have him participate in this than play against some kids at the ARC during the offseason.

Fearing injury is no way to have a career. Get as good as possible by practicing and playing as much as you can and take advantage of phenomenal opportunities such as this [br For sure. The only people who should be turning down an opportunity to practice with team usa due to injury concerns have names such as durant, james, paul, curry et al And Leonard!

He got some practice with the team, and definitely a talented group to choose from. Don't think it's a bad thing he was cut. Gives him a little reality check as to where he is, and could easily serve as additional motivation. Hopefully we face UA in the S16 & he can prove Miller wrong.
I know you never want to fear injury, and you definitely want to push yourself, but given his history & the potential for a stress fracture if you play TOO much taking a little time off won't be the worst thing. Get to the weight room...and start working with those incoming players...
Curious how Miller handled cutting Leaf? Will he open up his recruitment again?! : )

"He withdrew from the team citing concerns with his left knee." The Real Oracle Out Where did you come up with that? I think he's just being a smart ass and making it up. To some posters on here it's funny to make knee jokes about Malik unfortunately. It's pretty hard to trust a guy who likes his own post.

Great that he got to be apart. I don't mind him not playing due to past injuries.

I was stoked to hear an Aztec-Pope was invited to participate. Kinda bummed he was cut. At the end of the day this has to help Malik with the extra practice time and exposure to some of the best talent and coaching in America. Well done Malik!

We know he has the skills, but could it be that Pope didn't fit in with Miller's style of play? Arizona does play more roughhouse, unlike the soft MWC teams. If Pope learned from this, the goat refs might whistle him for playing the way they're unaccustomed to seeing. Hell, talk about a dichotomy.

I feel like I'm hearing a lil bit of coach Fisher...... Pope states :“It has been crazy. All in all, I am just enjoying the experience, rather I make it our not I am going to enjoy this experience. There are only 21 players that have this opportunity to do this.”
