I agree HnT that the advertising is not in fact free, but the value of it is huge for a city that is tourism dependent. The SDTA spends 10+million each year on small 30 second ads and billboards that appear in VERY specific target markets like Phoenix and Seattle, you can do the math on a single 3-hour program nation-wide that focuses on San Diego. and that's 8 times/yr (not including pre-season) and more, if the Bolts host a playoff game. Holiday Bowl/once/year and to a less extent, the Poinsettia Bowl.

Bruce, Not always so simple in the case in College FB (see different teams, different regions>see Fresburg, Wazzu, Okla State for a few examples). SDSU Athletic Marketing is (as it has been since Steve S was/"is" involved) abysmal. This Charger drama is old and never ending. They deserve LA. It's not so much Charger drama. It's San Diego drama, with small minds in charge. At least Faulconer is stepping up to the plate and taking his hacks to try to fix this mess. And yes, it is that simple....the Aztecs need to play exciting football, win, and play teams people want to see. It is that simple. You and I are on the same page concerning both Faulconer and SDSU's OOC schedule. Had Fauconer's predecessors grabbed the bull by the balls like he has, a stadium deal would have gotten done years ago notwithstanding Mike Aguirre. And although most here disagree for some inexplicable reason (my guess is their nut hugging of Sterk), SDSU desperately needs to bring some big boy programs to the Q. Doing so would fire up casual fans who are simply not going to come out to watch Whyoming, San Joser and the like.

As I mentioned in at least one previous post, I asked Sterk's right hand man, JD Wicker about 2 for 1s and he said they aren't offering those to anybody. I asked why not? and got some generic response that they don't think they have to to get good programs here i.e. the Pac 12 teams they've scheduled. Bring in Michigan, Ohio St (oops, we had them but Rick Bay sold them back) and maybe some ACC teams. Boise is getting them. Wyoming got Texas to visit. Love the nut hugging comment....

The name of the game is having a Championship Team on the field . you do that with even better recruits/players . One way of getting that and out recruiting BSU and others is a State of the Art Facility - NFL style . Do feel a new high quality facility can help pick up a few recruits . so do you think small and lay out the money for a nice 30, 000 place on campus or try to go a long with the state of the art facility Chargers / City / County can put up . Sell the sizzle to recruits do you want to play on a NFL facility right here during your college career then on to the NFL or Blue Smurf Turf ? Same thing play at WSU , OSU , ... or an NFL facility ? As Coach Fisher says imagine yourself playing here on Saturdays and then Sundays in the NFL . Like it or not Rocky and his staff will tell you it really helps when they recruit players . We are not going to win games with out better players . So if it helps recruiting then use the facility to our advantage . It also does not hurt when recruits see the Q on Sundays , then envision playing there .

There are scenarios under which I could see SDSU fb benefiting big time from the new facility. My biggest issue however is seeing how this has actually failed for every team that has attempted to share a new NFL stadium with an NFL team. If we are lucky the circumstances the Chargers face will force them to accommodate SDSU more than other NFL teams (i.e. Steelers and Pitt) have accommodated their college tenants in the past. Then again what has the Chargers organization ever done that should lead any of us to believe that will happen? We can act as if somehow this will lead to a best case scenario for SDSU, however there is no real world evidence to point to that would suggest its going to happen.
Also, I follow SDSU fb recruting fairly close and honestly recruits rarely if ever mention the stadium as a plus. Its always about the coaching staff, brotherhood of the team, campus/location that seem to come up much more often. Even when I was in HS and played in a CIF game in the early 00's no one on my team who were going to play D1 ball thought the Q was special...other than its massive size. That's just the truth.
edit: I readily admit a new stadium, even if too big for us or not branded for SDSU, would draw some interest and more fans...at least initially.

It hasn't worked out well for Pitt and now U of Miami wants out of it's stadium with the Dolphins and are looking to partner with the MLS for new digs -- "One hurdle to the partnership is the Hurricanes' long-term contract for their current home, which is the Miami Dolphins' stadium. Another is the transition of the university presidency from Shalala to Julio Frenk, who takes over June 1. Shalala has said the Hurricanes' current stadium is too large. It is being remodeled by the Dolphins and will seat 65,000 in 2015. A stadium for an MLS team would seat at least 20,000, and perhaps up to 40,000 if the Hurricanes also played there. The site near Marlins Park would be much closer to the university campus and more convenient for students." www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mls/2015/05/22/beckham-and-university-of-miami-discuss-stadium-partnership/27815449/

Rocky, Brady.... have all continually mentioned how they always use the fact that the Aztecs play in an NFL stadium when recruiting players especially guys who are looking to play in the NFL some day ( what recruit does not dream of playing in the NFL, especially the 3or 4 star guys ). All coaches see it as a major positive factor in recruiting . The recruits also mention it . Definitely a positive for recruiting . I talked with the football parents at the spring game . They all said playing at the Q a real NFL stadium was a positive contributing factor to choosing SDSU , in addition to the staff and other things . It all adds up . We need an edge in recruiting and an NFL State of the Art facility would do that . Same theme you need quality players to win championships . Should give SDSU an edge when recruiting the players needed to do that . The only issue that should matter is winning championships

I have a very strong gut instinct that tells me all the comments from Aztecs football coaches about the "benefits" of playing in the Q have a lot more to do with spin/PR than truth (i.e., "lipstick on a pig"). Parents' comments could likewise be viewed as a bit of confirmation bias.
If playing in an NFL stadium was such a great thing, then why don't more universities play in their local NFL stadium? Answer: because it sucks (slight hyperbole, but not much). Same conclusion reached by Pitt and Miami.
Recruits would LOVE a true college football stadium and the gameday atmosphere that comes with it.

When SDSU coaches play the "calling an NFL stadium home is great" card, they leave out the "compared to playing in Spartan Stadium in San Jose" part.
Spartan: Of or relating to ancient Greece; marked by simplicity, frugality or avoidance of luxury and comfort

I agree most coaches do have to spin many of the things they tell recruits . But do believe the Aztec Coaches see playing at the Q- NFL facility as a major plus in their recruiting . Would guess it beats most of the other facilities that are in the MW or even some PAC schools . A new State of the Art Facility could have the sizzle to attract some recruits . Not sure what the parents told you at the spring game . But the parents I sat with in the stands , were pretty up front on comments . Thought OC Toledo, hurt more then helped the coaching staff . Also felt the new coaches on offense were much more involved instructing the players, asked their opinion about the Q , they said it helped their son choose SDSU felt it provides a professional atmosphere. Yes it would be better if more fans showed up . Doubt they had any reason to "spin" their answers .

Interesting, Wouldnt have thought playing at the Q was a major factor the way I ts covered during the recruiting cycle by the likes of rivals and others. If players and parents are confirming it though there has to be some truth to it. It may also help that in the MW there are very few quality venues.

I left you a question to answer in regards to one of your postsiin this thread and am awaiting a response. as far as the NFL Stadiums/College teams, MOST of the college teams who share a NFL Stadium are from lesser conferences, draw very few people, and really aren't that good. Temple GA State Tulane until they built there own stadium and then there are those Kickoff games that have been moved to the NFL Stadiums because of the $$$$ Cu/Csuck Cowboys Kickoff Classic Texas Kickoff - Houston Chick Fil A - Atlanta and now a new one in Charlotte Why doesn't Army/Navy play at their own fields? $$$$ Why is Penn State playing Maryland at the Ravens Stadium? If the new San Diego stadium doesn't work out for STATE then they can go build their own with all that $$ you and a few others say they have stashed. Seems to me, this would work out for State either way. Why worry?

I'm afraid you are not recognizing the fact that it is becoming more and more difficult to get name schools (Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, Alabama, even Oregon and USC) to play here. I would certainly like to see one such school on our home non-conference schedule each year, but those schools have little incentive to agree to such a game. This has been getting more difficult for some time, and will get even more difficult in the future. Many, if not most, of the name schools play only 3 non-conference games. They seem to prefer, and who can blame them, to play an occasional such game away from home only if the opponent is another P5 school. We have played such schools here in the past (Florida St. in '77, Missouri in '80, USC in 1992, Oklahoma in '96, Illinois in 2000, Miami of FLA several times, Oregon in '85 and '88, Stanford in '88, Wisconsin in '98, etc.). Unfortunately, the college football world is much different today from that it was in the '80s and '90s. We've been able to schedule P5 schools only a couple of times in the past decade. Our only hope is to run the table and end the season 13-0 (including MWC championship game). Even that might not be enough to get into one of the access bowls, but what else can we do? One would hope that with such seasons SDSU would at least boost attendance close to 40,000 per game. AzWm

Should give SDSU an edge when recruiting the players needed to do that . The only issue that should matter is winning championships So, we have differing posts regarding the value of the size and quality of the stadium in the recruiting process. Frankly, I think that the Q, even though it is showing its age, may in fact be a net positive in the minds of H.S. seniors. But there are a number of factors, as has also been mentioned, that are important to recruits. No doubt many recruits choose lesser P5 schools despite the less than state-of-the-art stadiums they will play in. Playing in the SEC or Big-10 has to outweigh playing in a new stadium. I hope I am correct in saying that the ideal (forget cost and other hurdles to be overcome) would be an on-campus stadium seating 40,000 to 45,000 fans with expansion possibilities for up to 50,000 seats. That's the ideal. So what comes in second place? Inheriting the Q by default (i.e., Chargers leave town) or playing in a new NFL "Chargers" stadium? And, if the latter becomes reality, how does showing recruits a new NFL stadium to play in stack up against the almost certainly higher rental and other coats SDSU and Aztec fans will have to pay?
It would be very interesting to learn what the AD and his number crunchers have to say about that last point. AzWm

When SDSU coaches play the "calling an NFL stadium home is great" card, they leave out the "compared to playing in Spartan Stadium in San Jose" part. Spartan: Of or relating to ancient Greece; marked by simplicity, frugality or avoidance of luxury and comfort Very nicely said! But let's not ignore one big factor in favor of SJSU's stadium. As I understand it, it's owned by San Jose State. Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home, especially when you control all revenue streams associated with that home.
One more thing. SJSU is doing some upgrades as described by the following paragraph found on Wikipedia....... Most recently, a Spartan Stadium end zone building addition is projected to commence in 2014-2015 and will cost approximately US$38 million. The 61,000 GSF facility will house sports medicine and athletic training space, a football team locker room, football coaching staff offices, meeting rooms, a hall of fame, and an auditorium. The facility will serve the day-to-day operations of the athletics department, and provide hospitality space on game days. It will be located at the South Campus site, north of Spartan Stadium and is projected to be completed in 2016.AzWm

One is that there is now the technology (don't know the particulars)to allow different teams to have their customized look---it was discussed in the initial stages of the Carson deal. Second, virtually every college recruit and player has dreams of the NFL. Seeing, playing, in such a "glamorous" new facility--empty or full- must surely carry subconscious appeal to young minds.

I believe Jets/Giants have the color set up you're referring to...that would awesome...but it makes you wonder the price tag for something like. Especially since we'll likely need to pay for that cost. Still feels like SDSU will have to thread a needle to come away with a suitable situation in a new NFL stadium. Yes, and new always has some pull with the early adopters/youth. But as long as we play in the MW it will be hard to pull more than the mid/low 40's for in-conference games, regardless of venue IMO.

Well, I think that you are probably correct. However, that wow feeling when seeing a nice, new stadium must surely be of secondary importance to a H.S. senior. Do the recruit and his folks take to the recruiter? Is the program looking for someone with the skills the young man possesses? What about the conference? Will the games to televised? Lots of factors. In terms of playing in a new NFL stadium, I continue to be worried about the athletic department's bottom line if rental and other fees turn out to be much higher than they are at present. How much higher would ticket and other prices have to go to keep the program in the black? Or, put another way, how many more paying fans would there have to be to offset higher costs? 5,000? 10,000? 15,000? And, let's not forget, we are talking about making the best of a less than ideal situation. If I am not mistaken, we are already the only FBS program in the West that has to operate as a tenant in a stadium designed for NFL games. That right there puts us at a disadvantage. Lots of questions to be answered. Azwm
