Great news for us. Read this article in the Union Trib. Sounds like we may have the Winston we have always wanted next year. Union Trib Link
LOVE this quote: “I believe I’ll be able to play in the NBA. But the most important thing is, when I go to the NBA I want to be able to stay in the NBA. I know. I’m real. I looked in the mirror and said, ‘There are things you have to get better at – free throw shooting, consistently finishing.I was the leading scorer and rebounder, and I believe I didn’t play on top of my game half the season. If I can tighten some of those things up, coupled with my demeanor and things like that, I have a great chance to continue to grow. I think there’s a stigma that when you’re a senior, you’re done developing. I don’t believe that’s true.” The kid has a dream and he's chosen SDSU as the place to help him make that dream come true, no matter how hard it is or how long it takes. I certainly hope the Winston Shepard haters get off his back next season and just appreciate all that he has done for this university and program.

It will be VERY interesting to see how SDSU uses those last 2 scholarships. I still think a 5 year senior is coming and another D1 transfer that will need to sit out. That would make next year's team even better and also give us someone with experience to come in an help right away the following 2 years. It wouldn't shock me if Narian decides to reclassify AND come to SDSU that we forgo one of those and sign him instead. Really might be who we get to commit to SDSU first. I would think that the 5th year seniors will all be deciding pretty soon (as well as the D1 transfers) so Narian needs to decide soon as well.

Article in the UT by Zeigler today . Narain 6'10" could be down to the Aztecs and the Zags . He is also still seeing if he can reclassify to 2015 . So he is the top priority . give him as much time as he needs .
Aztec coaches have been out looking and talking with 2016 and 2017 recruits ( including M. Cage and B. Bailey for 2016 ). open April recruiting ends soon for 2016 /2017 guys .
For grad transfers still talking with M. Tollefsen SF, 6'9".( Could be depending on what D. Allen finally decides ?) from USF and L. Jackson 6'4" from BC .originally from CA
Also talking with regular red shirt transfer S. Aaron and M . Hoetzel.
Still a lot of moving parts for the 2015 roster and already looking at 2016 . Never too early

It is really great to have our UT basketball reporter back too. This story preceded the Shep story, and addresses the spot our coaching staff finds itself. One question is "will Hemsley come to the Mesa as an accomplished D-1 PG, or will he need some seasoning. If he needs seasoning and our staff brings in a 5th year PG, will that hinder JH's development? We don't know, I hope our staff does know. www.utsandiego.com/news/2015/apr/23/sdsu-basketball-recruiting-options/

www.utsandiego.com/news/2015/apr/23/sdsu-basketball-winston-shepard-return-senior/2/?#article-copy“I have a chance to be part of something that can really, really be special, whatever special is... I’m not going to make any promises or anything. I’m not saying Final Four. I’m not saying champion. I’m just saying we have a chance to be truly special." "I think this has a chance to be the best team that I’ve been on here. That was a little bit too much for me to pass up." “I believe I’ll be able to play in the NBA. But the most important thing is, when I go to the NBA I want to be able to stay in the NBA. I know. I’m real. I looked in the mirror and said, ‘There are things you have to get better at – free throw shooting, consistently finishing.’ If I can tighten some of those things up, coupled with my demeanor and things like that, I have a great chance to continue to grow." “I can’t even begin to explain how excited I am, I just feel like I have unfinished business at the college level.” “Come on, let’s just call it what it is, we got mopped off the floor. As a competitor, that doesn’t sit well with me. I’ve had a bad taste in my mouth. I’ve been in the gym ever since. I can’t wait until that first game.” Hey... Remember when people were asking, in all seriousness, whether Shep could dunk? Thanks for the quotes. For cheepos like me that don't pay the subscription fee for the UT, i appreciate it. Yes, For players like Winston who have tons of talent, but seem to have a great support system, i'm very glad for him getting and taking full advantage of the college experience. I'm sure earning his degree is a big motivating factor. And just to see the growth in his game and demeanor on the court has been a cool thing. It sounds like his quotes shows he is starting to see where he needs to address the weak points in his game and that is great to hear. Hope he can attack and finish at the rim next season...and be a big playmaker in dishing the ball to Pope and Z. Now if only we can see a big jump in performance from Angelo Chol this could be a nice tournament run again.

Welcome back? Where did Shep go? I don't see what all the hype is about. I don't see Shep as an NBA player in the slightest. I hope he can make some shots next year and play like he wants to be in the association. Of course you were one of those who said JF wouldn't be able to play in the association either so there's that... I guess if you call this playing in the association I stand corrected: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamaal_Franklin21 games averaging 7 mins....had to get a chance being a draft pick, but didn't take as far as I can tell. But much is yet to be seen. He may just make it.

Maturity to the nth degree . Had a choice jump to the NBA , pressure to join your HS team mates in the NBA, or come back with a definite purpose for both himself and His team . He knows he has a lot to prove to himself , and fans . Can we now agree to give him an opportunity to see what he can do as a leader for our Aztecs . Little doubt we are going to need Winston at his best to make a solid run in MM . Not shred him as he is going to miss jump shots or lay ups, TO ... . Appreciate the rebounds , play on D , draw fouls , passes , alley oops , ....
Thank you Mr. Winston . Looking forward to your senior season as an Aztec . Introduction as part of the starting 5. Seeing your family on Senior night . and all other parts of the Aztec BB activities .

I never understand the hate coming from the SDSU faithful for the likes of the Winston Shepard's and Franklin's of the world. We talk about them as if they play for Vegas or something I hear you RnB. My gosh, Franklin got a two year guaranteed NBA contract, played in China while still drawing his NBA paycheck, was in the D-League and now signed by the Nuggets. What am I missing here? I mean, really, he's competing at the highest level of basketball in the world and getting a pretty penny doing it, what more does he have to do for some people to acknowledge that he made the right decision for him. Compare Franklin's resume to 98% of the other college basketball players who will NEVER see an NBA floor. I wish those who have issues with Shepard and Franklin could see through their own biases and see what these kids did here at SDSU and give them the props they deserve. Back to Shepard, so glad he stayed from my own selfish point of view based on how good he makes us next year. I would've supported his decision to strive to achieve his dream had he had decided to leave to go professional.

Nice dig. I really hope Winston goes out and becomes a lottery pick next season. It is a possibility but his offense, free-throw shooting, and decision making will have to improve decisively and I think he will.

Hopefully he gets enough time in the new practice facility to help his shooting all around!

So, yes, that's what I'd call playing in the association.

I have a funny feeling that by conference play, Hemsley will be starting. PG - Hemsley SG - Shrigley SF - Shepard PF - Pope C - Spencer First bigs off bench: Cheatham, Chol, Allen First guard off bench: Kell, Williams?

He's a freshman so him being the backup Lead ball handler is a much better role for him to start off the year. I also expect a huge improvement in Trey Kell so him losing his starting spot won't happen IMO. Either way, next years team should be a lot of fun to watch

Hemsley is rated higher than any other Aztec guard recruit in history. So look outside the Aztecs for a comparison. There have been many guards that came in ready to roll.
