First step is to bring in a hungry coach who has a vision and will not be out recruited. After that you upgrade the schedule and work on a stadium solution. But none of it happens without a change at head coach and I am not a Rocky hater, I think overall he has done an adequate job but they need someone killing it. When Rocky leads the Aztecs to a 9-3 record this year and a birth in the MWC Championship game, will you still say that? Birth of a new generation

Rocky Long and Top 25 Football Program.
Seems mutually exclusive to me.
Serious question:
Has he EVER been part of a top 25 program? Anywhere?

Less then 1 month ago we aspired to be a Top 25 program, 3 weeks later our big announcement is that we open the season against USD. Now that puts butts in seats, NOT really. Its only a matter of time before we become an FCS team at this pace.

about USD being added to the schedule? LOL What a joke. That Top 25 goal is a mirage.

Why isn't "AztecBruce" posting under his name as opposed to ab? But, anyways I think it showed some imaginative thinking to come up with a way to have a 12 game schedule as opposed to a disappointing 11 game schedule. Do I want to play USD in football every year, no. But as a one off its pretty cool. In regards to Sterk, has he done anything spectacular, not really. But he seems competent and certainly doing a better job then who ever Washington State replaced him with. The big splash football hire of Mike Leach instantly fixed football in Pullman, didn't it? Can SDSU be a top 25 program in football? Absolutely, if you think it will be easy you don't have a grasp of reality. SDSU has been a good football program only once. When Don Coryell, a truly once in a lifetime coach was here; Claude Gilbert kept it going for another 6-8 years but Gilbert certainly couldn't have started what Coryell did.

With Ernie on the field we'll never lose a Fotoball game Fotoball is fun, but it's expensive because you have to have a camera in order to play.

It seems like half the article was about women's softball. That just won't make it. I think people would be more likely to invest if they saw a distinct plan in place to accomplish the goals that they are talking about. I don't think there is one.

Maybe they could start by upgrading their current uniforms. Sure....., What if anything is wrong with their uniforms? You sound like a transfer from Oregon. You know, the team that never wears a uniform that you can recognize, or understand what college they represent.

Gee, no coach at New Mexico has ever had a top 25 team in football. Lobo fans don't support football, and Rocky owns the most wins in Lobo football. Not too bad considering what he had there. (I would not hold that against him) Now, here it is a different, and unique challenge. Rocky, has been part of a rebuilding process with the Aztecs. First, as an assistant under Hoke, and only the last 4 years as the HC. Before he got here Aztec football was so poor, and in such bad shape that the attitude of not only the the players, but the general fan base was so low you couldn't get people to show up for a game no matter what. Even though we have had 5 straight winning seasons the attitude of the general public is still on the low side, because they expect instant turn around. Many football experts, coaches, and prognosticators have commented on what they believe has been a very good job done by the coaching staff at San Diego State, but that doesn't convince harsh fans. They seem to forget that turning a program around takes much more time when you also have to work on low/poor attitudes. The attitude of the players is to the point where they expect to go out and win on a regular basis. Combine that with better recruiting, and scheduling and a little luck, and you start getting some wins over those P5 teams which are not easy to do. Don't come back with , but he told us it would take about 5 years to build a good team like he wanted. He didn't make a promise only a statement, and so it could be we are still in the process of working on that. I still think, and believe Rocky can get it done, and with the new assistants he has this could be the start of something better. This school is working on making the Top 25, and if you don't believe it then stay home! It will not happen overnight, but at least they set up a goal, and are now working on it.

I can see two upsides with the USD game.
1. Looks like we should go undefeated at home. 2. We should have a pretty good chance at 10 wins.

You know, the team that never wears a uniform that you can recognize, or understand what college they represent. Eh... I'd actually argue in favor of laztec88's point. Nothing is necessarily "wrong" in any sense with their uniforms as that's entirely up to personal preference and opinion. But comparatively their uniforms (SDSU's) are not the best looking out there in my opinion, and not much can be done uniform-wise with only the colors red and black. The thing is.. show me any uniform Oregon wears currently/has worn recently and I would be able to clearly recognize that it is Oregon with all logos/insignia removed. I can't really think of many universities at all actually that stick purely to one "simple" uniform, such as what SDSU uses. I think it's a great thing to have different combinations and schemes around the university's colors that can be expressed through the football uniforms. I don't see how that's a bad thing at all.

I have a question for the "I hate this game, this program sucks we will never be a top 25 program" crowd.
Let's say State plays USD and wins by 3 points, goes on next week into Cal and wins by 4 points, beats South Alabama by 1 point but comes back the next week to beat Penn St by a solid 10 points. To the people outside of San Diego and to the people that put together the rankings, would the fact that we beat USD... Scratch that...would the fact that we even played USD matter in the grand scheme of things???
Will playing USD stop us from becoming a ranked program if we're able to beat Cal and Penn St???
Just curious to know your answer.

Assuming we win the USD game, which we will, it isn't even a blip in the road in the drive to 25.
9+ wins puts us in the MWC championship game against a ranked BSU.
Win that game, and we are on our way.
Go Aztecs!

Win that game, and we are on our way. Go Aztecs! There's a lot of whistling through the graveyard going on here. The USD game is not a good sign for our program at all. "Aztecs head coach Rocky Long is traveling and was not available for comment," said yesterday's UT article. Maybe. Or maybe he just doesn't have anything good to say about this.
