Does being one of 68 teams to participate in March Nadness have value?

out of how many eligible teams? while we're on the subject, yes, this 68 business is a tad ridiculous...why stop at 68? why not 72? 76? 96? 128? then it'll be 128 + 4 play-ins. Rinse, wash, repeat...as long as there is money to be made.

it's like youth sports nowadays...every kid gets a trophy....let's have a round of applause for just participating! That point would have merit if everybody went bowling. In an era when half the teams went, it still took us a decade to come back to bowl games

I don't follow football as closely as others, but you're telling me that there is a pecking order college football? I thought everyone was on the same playing field, and everyone got into the playoffs at the end of the year. No... that would be the NBA...

I cannot fathom anyone thinking that rewarding a 6-6 (MEDIOCRE) team with a Bowl game is good for college football.
Bowl games used to be special. They used to mean something. Getting to a Bowl game was a big accomplishment.
Now HALF the teams in D1 go to a Bowl game. Half. It's not a big deal to make it to a Bowl game anymore. They've been cheapened. Devalued. It's all about money now. Can we make money by creating a new Bowl game that no one is demanding? Can we make money by creating a Bowl game where there is no need to create one? There aren't enough winning teams to fill these new Bowls? No problem, just let in the .500 teams and we're good!
There is nothing special about just squeaking into a joke of a Bowl game that gets no respect.
Respect is earned. Rewards should also be earned. A 6-6 record deserves neither respect nor reward.

Let us go to about 10-15 more bowl games in a row, and maybe I'll grow tired of it. Seeing I've been a fan since the mid-80s and had watched us in two bowl games until Hoke arrived, I'm basking in the fact our Aztecs get to play in any bowl. I love the fact SDSU gets to play in bowl games. At the end of the day, I know we could have done better. But, we're in a bowl. I'm a fan who gets to watch us play one more game. I think that's a good thing. Plus, we get extra practices out of it. That benefits the team for next season.

I agree that .500 teams in a bowl game is ridiculous... If memory serves, wasn't the "6 win" rule put in when teams still played 11 games? It would make more sense then. I think further qualifying it "6 wins and a winning record (allowing for ties)" would be much more appropriate. Does anyone have the numbers on how many teams qualify with 6 wins, and how many of those haven't gone "bowling" over the past several years?

Most Bowl games are simply another game on the schedule nowadays. You want to be in one no matter what. I don't care if it's the bum-fuh bowl in Siberia. Get on ESPN, get the practice days, get the special treatment, get the team building events during bowl week. Get it every year. Things will get better when you can show recruits bowl games are the norm. A mostly hidden benefit of playing in a bowl is all the extra practice allowed. Most use the first days to let the redshirts and the freshmen who haven't played much, to get involved. Look at it as an early extension to Spring practice. Comparing the last 4 years to the previous 10, we probably had well over a month of extra practices.

Interesting about the "extra practice". Seems like the ensuing season's results on the field for us have gone down steadily over the past 3 years, yes?

I certainly want the Aztecs to go bowling as do the majority of the cynics on this board. My, obviously, over the top reaction to the bowl games stem from people constantly equating being bowl eligible to having a successful season. It would be like people celebrating their wealth and success because they have a color television. When everyone had a color tv that stopped being a measure. The TWELVE YEARS IN A ROW, we didn't get into a bowl game showed that our program was unsuccessful. Since then, successful. No? BTW, there are several levels of success.

Until the system is changed, drastically, your wish is moot and nothing more than hyperbole. The system is what it is. So we join it and take advantage where we can.

Pretty sure we're going to the Poinsettia Bowl regardless of the outcome next week. But obviously, I'm hoping for some weirdness in the win/losses in our conference, and we end up in the championship game... then the Vegas Bowl.

Tell that to the players. Eeeeooor. So you think that 6-6 teams should be rewarded for utter mediocrity with Bowl game appearances? 6-6 is not a good record, and teams that end up with less than winning records should not be Bowl eligible. I understand that the system is already in place rewarding those teams, but just like the Poll system gave way to the BCS system which gave way to the Playoff system the rules should be changed to eliminate the 6-6 teams from Bowls. That change is highly unlikely to come, since that would mean that some of these Bowl games that are laughed at by the media and most college football fans would be eliminated, but that is what would give non-New Year's Day Bowl games more credibility and would make getting in to a Bowl game a bigger deal than it is now. How about we approach it like this. There are too many bowl games. I agree However, though there are too many, it is better to be in one of those games, than to sit at home like we did for so many years before Hoke/Long.

We haven't gone to a Bowl game with a 6-6 record, so requiring a winning record would not have affected our Bowl appearances. The 6-6 teams that did make it into Bowls would have been eliminated, compensating for the loss of the 2 or 3 Bowls that would be discontinued. We would have gone Bowling even with the winning record requirement.

A positive win true but Air Force was without its best player at RB by far and we had Ruffin back at full steam.

Interesting about the "extra practice". Seems like the ensuing season's results on the field for us have gone down steadily over the past 3 years, yes? Well, no. Did you witness the physicality of the defense last night? Probability not. That was a young team getting better. Your myopia over Rocky disorients your mentality, and perhaps your reality, yes?

Interesting about the "extra practice". Seems like the ensuing season's results on the field for us have gone down steadily over the past 3 years, yes? Emphatically NO! Only in your mind has anything "gone down steadily" whatever that means. Being in a bowl game generates numerous positives. Those who pay attention here have discussed all this. Let me help you out here -- practicing in Dec. allows the staff to work the RsF hard to see who has matured and gets the nod to compete in March. That of itself makes the experience so much more valuable. Now,if final season records is your only measuring stick, then your are still caught in the generalities of college football. The Aztecs are SO much deeper than five years ago. The fact that they don't win all their games is another issue. It might be that the difference between wining and losing is really quite close. Has to do with turnovers, senior leadership and sometimes just the bounce of the ball, penalties called or not called.. Don't believe it? Rocky speaks to this all the time, as do many other coaches. But, then some here don't comprehend what a treasure we have in this quite successful coach.
