At this point in their careers at SDSU, the Oracle would say that Pump is better than Hillman.
1. Pump is faster than Hillman. Hillman had times where he had breakaways, but had defenders catch him from behind. Pump on the other hand rarely has this issue.
2. Although Hillman was shifty, Pump just looks more elusive on the field.
3. The Oracle thinks they both look about even when catching the ball in the backfield.
Only thing that the Oracle is hesitant about is Pump's body build and weight. Pump is a leaner guy so the Oracle questions whether Pump can stay healthy as a pro. We will have to see if this is the case.
But either way, Hillman had 130+ yards tonight against the Bolts. He's finally coming into his own at Denver and hope that his fumble problems are behind him.
Talent wise, the Oracle sees a little more upside to Pump than Hillman. If that is the case, where is he going to be drafted if Hillman was a 3rd round selection in the NFL draft.

Pumphery has averaged about an extra yard per play even though Hillman had much better QB and receivers to split the defenses attention.

Tough call, real tough call. I was thinking about it the other night vs. Hawaii. Specifically after he broke his fall w his hand and went on to run for 50. I'm calling it a tossup until further notice.

His O-line wasn't near as good as this one and the schedule was much harder both years (especially his freshman year) Pump is a beast but Hillman was special with his elusiveness. He'd stop on a dime and change direction, and when people got their arms on him for some reason they always just slipped right off. I never could understand how he did it

The best run vs. Hawai'i I've seen since the George Jones cutback run in at the Q in the 90s.

I'd like to see how Pumph would do against TCU, Utah, and BYU.

I have to give it to Hillman at this point in time, but that could/should change as Pumphrey builds up his body. One thing about Pumphrey I really like is the fact he never falls or gets pushed backwards at the end of his runs. He always falls forward for the extra two yards. He doesn't avoid contact at all.

Hillman had much better skill players around him, but DP has a better oline. I think it'even. Ronnie was a little better runner but DP is a much better receiver at this point in their careers. Ronnie really struggled catching the ball in college.

Results matter.
5.5 YPC Ronnie Hillman (2011) 5.8 YPC Ronnie Hillman (2010) 6.9 YPC Donnel Pumphrey (2014) 6.0 YPC Donnel Pumphrey (2013)
I like Pumphrey better. Projecting how Pumphrey will be as an NFL player versus what Hillman has done is not a valid method to compare the two, for our purposes.
Both played with Muema. Pumphrey had a better YPC than Muema (6.0 v 4.9). Hillman had a worse YPC than Muema (5.5 v 6.0).
