The major factor that UCLA and the PAC has is the exposure that comes with their TV deal, and all those banners hanging in Pauley doesn't hurt either. Our real selling points against UCLA are: the home court environment, they may as well play in a museum; SD>LA for quality of life, play for an up and coming program with a HOF type coach if he's still around, and the CHANCE to go to the pros. Hard to argue with UCLA education, facilities, TV deal, program history, recent success (S16 past couple years), and they've gotten guys into the league that have stuck. Outside of Kawhi, we haven't. Oh, and Russell Westbrook comes to mind for a successful guy to roll through there. ....and Kevin Love.

The five-star PG is on an unofficial visit to Arizona today. So No to Zona.

So J. Hands is going to play HS ball with Leaf . Leaf yesterday decides to drop Arizona , some say take a look at UCLA or ?? Hands goes for a visit to Arizona . Should be interesting conversations between Hands and Leaf when they start school .
Also can you imagine that trash talking between U of A and UCLA fans . or will T Bland ( USC ) or SDSU get involved ?

From the article: "I think the next evolution of his game is to be able to be a guy who can pick up full court, play defense, and have him put as much intensity on that end of the court as the opposite end of the court and that’s going to be the tell-tale sign of actually how far he goes in this sport.” Sounds like his best choice would be SDSU.

No doubt! Defense DOES matter in the NBA.....Showcase Kawhi Leonard and his Defensive Player of the Year award with his new $90 Million contract. You have to do both O AND D in the League, especially at the PG position.

Seems like he has smart parents. If that's the case, SDSU has a definite chance because of our stability. Smart parents will know that Coach Fish has done wonders with a bunch of no star and 2 star kids prior to getting Shep. Since then we've been to 2 Sweet 16's. That's a great article that offers more hope for us. To me, it's a no brainer between choosing Fish/Dutch over Alford. Smart parents will know Alford is a clown and jerk. Smart parents will know Fish stuck by Tapley and Pope's broken legs and Buddah Jones' academic issues and honoring Aqeel with a scholarship instead of going to Ryan Anderson.

My guess is UCLA or maybe Mr. Hands is the first local 5 star player to stay home and play on the Mesa. Parents stated one of the most important factors in the decision as "to be able to attend the games". If this is so, then we have a shot at Leaf, and especially McCoy IMO. oh, here's Dad's statement copied, "Being able to go watch him play and have some kind of accessibility to that, that’s a big thing for us too.”

As we have seen from numerous guys who made verbal for 2016 class then changes their minds . Way too early to know what players are going to be on what teams for 2016 and then project who will have PT for guards for 2017 . Very operative phrase is "watch their son play " What school will have the PT, also how far will parents drive to see him play or does it mean watch him play on TV?
If we hope to land Hands we are going to need a good year this year ( SW16 or better) and projection for 2016 and even 2017 . Five star recruits want to play on top level teams .

How do you know what he wants, or what "minimums" he sets on the teams he's considering?
He could very well want to be THE GUY to help SDSU get to the next level, like a Rabb, a Ben Simmons or an Ellenson (Marquette). You think Ellenson went to Marquette based on their performance in the S16 (they were LAST in their conference)? Swanigan to Purdue? S Carolina isn't known for their S16 (or ANY tournament) history, yet they managed to land Dozier (& others). SOME 5 star recruits want to play for the elite, "blue blood" teams. SOME actually want to BUILD programs. And some just want to stay close to home.
Has Hands said he doesn't want to help build a program or help take one to the next level? When I read the interview with his dad it sounds very much like he's describing SDSU, and he definitely doesn't come across as someone who puts getting to the S16 as a priority. Plus the fact they've visited SDSU quite a few times. Sounds like we're building a good relationship already to me.
It also appears he'll value the "fit" with the school over the ability to play with friends (e.g. TJ, etc.), which is good to hear.

And the following quote from the article also sounds like he's talking about the Aztec program and coaching staff, especially Steve Fisher. "Anytime you have a coach who is open to a dialogue, not more so playing time or anything like that, but emotionally what’s going on with my son. When you hand your child off, that’s important, you want to know you’re giving him to somebody looking out for your plan and not just a four-year plan.”

Local San Diego State may not get a lot of play publicly as a serious threat to land Jaylen, but his father says the Aztecs are definitely in the mix. "San Diego State has always been in the picture and active in the recruitment," Ronnie said. "He loves the environment and atmosphere there. Jaylen loves the coaches. I know people don't ever talk about it but they're very much an option for Jaylen." www.scout.com/college/basketball/recruiting/story/1572569-alert-jaylen-hands-will-take-more-visits

His dad made mention ucla plays at a faster pace which sdsu clearly doesn't but that's because we haven't a dynamic point guard since x. Hands will change the pace.

Has Jaylen or his family said anything definite about schools no . Is interesting that Jaylen tried to transfer from his HS to Foothills Christian but was denied by CIF . He is only a junior . So he will hear a variety of things from numerous major colleges for the next 15 months . Also on the AAU circuit . Who knows what things will look like by next year and offers he will get . Abundance of things to consider , for a 5 star athlete . Do think it will be important for the Aztecs to be a top 25 team and do well in MM .
Also interesting to hear that Brandon McCoy, 6'10" , 2017 recruit, is seeking transfer from Morse to Cathedral .
Aztecs are also looking at Jordan Starr , sophomore at Foothills , 6'6" guard , his dad is originally from Australia . Jordan is playing on the U17 Australia team.

UCLA is rolling right now. Good team heading into this year, as well as moving forward. Technically this "fills" their classes for both 2016 & 2017, although that can change quickly with the usual turnover (& option to move Alford to WO status for a year or two).
Is anyone a bit surprised though, given Holiday & Ball - also both PGs - are on the roster (or will be)? Never hurts to have multiple PG's on the floor & technically all can play multiple positions, but usually these guys all want the ball often.
