We have been to S16 twice in the last 10 years , need to get back there or better if we want to land top rated recruits from any where . San Diego area has had only Leaf and Chase B rated in the top 20 , and they want to go to a top 20 team or better . Like it or not PAC schools and conference have out performed both SDSU and way better then MW in results of MM . Even Powell chose UCLA .JAM center will help but it all starts with getting to E8 or at least SW16 . The biggest thing preventing us from getting 5 star kids is the conference we are in, and it is not close. We have consistently won a tourney game or 2 recently.

Very difficult for a school not in the P5 to land a top 20 recruit unless you are at least SW16 or better consistently . We are close but that is not good enough if we want to land the higher level recruits . That is why this year is very important in recruiting going forward . We lose a lot of guys after this season , the whole starting front line . Have Zylan, and hopefully Narain to build around going into 2016 . Plus Kell and JH in the back court .

Just watched a video clip on Jaylen Hands that was posted on the Rivals page... I don't know, man. Just a lot of one on one ball hogging while everyone stands around. I'd be excited to have him because he's a 5 star and would elevate our image even more but give me a DJ Gay who was a 2 star anyday over Hands. I think Xavier was "just" a 3 star. I've seen Justin Moore from Mission Bay 3 times live (once vs. Kell) and he's good (he's better than D'Erryl and Aqeel right now but not Xavier's level yet). He passes well and is bigger than Hands. Justin is a 4 star I think. I like the team game better. Hands can definitely break down a defense and take it to the rim and that's what we've been missing (I don't think DJ did that too many times) but with our talent on the wings, I rather have a DJ Gay type who didn't turn it over and got us into our offense.

Jaylen is going to be a junior in HS this year . So he has time to learn to play . Think he will be playing with Leaf this year so we will get a good look how well he plays with another highly rated player . They could be a very good duo inside and outside.

From Scout today. Zona, UCLA, CAL and SDSU pressing the hardest.
“I notice when coaches come to my games and it is something I appreciate a lot,” Hands said. “I love when I know there are coaches coming to my games to see me play.
“I know Arizona and UCLA are at every game, Cal and SDSU also, Stanford is at most. Kentucky comes once in a while. Those are probably the five most common schools.”
Hands is planning to visit Arizona on August 7 and it will be his second time on campus.

Scout.com update and film from the Adidas Uprising. Still an Aztec consideration. I can't see him going to UCLA as 247 predicts, not after the Bruins signing all the Ball Bros. Player: Jaylen Hands Rating: 2017 5-star point guard High School Team: Chula Vista (Calif.) Mater Dei Catholic AAU Team: Compton Magic Vitals: 6-foot-2, 160 pounds Recruiting: Offers from Arizona, UCLA, California, San Diego State, Stanford, Arizona State, Louisville, Memphis, San Diego, USC www.scout.com/high-school/california/story/1570053-adidas-uprising-video-jaylen-hands

Is Jaylen transferring to play this year of HS with Leaf ? Would guess Arizona will be a strong influence from Leaf .

Yes, but I think he will take his time and not commit anywhere until the dust settles for the Class of 2016. His two Compton Magic Teammates (Ike & Hill) are trying to talk him into UCLA, but given the 3 Ball brothers, I don't see UCLA. Zona has a lot of 4 & 5-star PGs recruited. I think it will be a long while until we see this kid with an LOI.

As with Ayton and McCoy... I think SDSU is as close as it's ever been to landing these types of high ranked players. Fish turned 2 star and no star players into quality ones (DJ Gay, Richie Williams, J Frank, etc); we consistently got 3 star guys (Billy White, Malcom Thomas, Zabo, D'Erryl); consistently landing 4 star guys (Dakarai, Kell, Chol transfer, Hemsley, Z, etc). With a good PG we can go deeper in March Madness and be knocking on the door of these 5 star guys. Good news is Hands and McCoy are still just juniors to be, and we have time. Ayton I'm not expecting but a guy can dream. We landed Evan Burns back when we weren't that good just yet in 2002.

Thought we got Burns because he could not get into UCLA .
2016 is going to be very important . We need at least SW16 or even better to show we are close to reaching the next level , need players similar to these top three local guys to do it . We are also going to need to land a good recruiting class for 2016 to show we are a program that is reloading and they could be the pieces that could take us to E8 , F4 with The goal a championship .

Is Hands really a one and done guy? Serious question. He's no Kyrie Irving as a junior. Not the size and passing of D'Angelo Russell. I'd be happy if we got Hands no doubt. But one and done? That's Tyus Jones- like and he's not Tyus Jones. Yes we did get Evan Burns cuz he didn't get into UCLA.

Obviously ANYONE can declare after 1 year, but when you say "one & done" talent I think first round guaranteed (if not lottery). I definitely wouldn't put him in that category, no. I would describe him as an "immediate impact player" at the collegiate level though.

Not the biggest fan of hands but he is a much better athlete than tyus, and has great vision. Not a one and done first round lock but he has shot. Even if he were at UCLA while the younger ball's were, he would unquestionably play over them.

If Hands believes in his talent, he will stay home and come to SDSU..... Just like Kell
Your talent is what gets you drafted....not the school....be a stud at SDSU, perform at the draft combines...they will measure you and put you through drills...perform and you Will be a #1 round draft pick....help your hometown school grow to the next level
Just ask UCLA draft picks,... Can anyone name a UCLA first rounder recently that has reached Leonard status? ZERO
Who 's scared to step out on the floor with us? UCLA is

The major factor that UCLA and the PAC has is the exposure that comes with their TV deal, and all those banners hanging in Pauley doesn't hurt either. Our real selling points against UCLA are: the home court environment, they may as well play in a museum; SD>LA for quality of life, play for an up and coming program with a HOF type coach if he's still around, and the CHANCE to go to the pros. Hard to argue with UCLA education, facilities, TV deal, program history, recent success (S16 past couple years), and they've gotten guys into the league that have stuck. Outside of Kawhi, we haven't. Oh, and Russell Westbrook comes to mind for a successful guy to roll through there.
