A home and home with NIU? Kind of a backwards move, IMO. A regional team, such as Idaho or NMSU, maybe I could understand.

Maybe you are confusing them with some other team. 2013 12-2 #20 in power rankings 2012 12-2 #22 in power rankings 2011 11-3 #32 in power rankings 2010 11-3 #27 in power rankings

Bill is spot on.
In the short term, our goal needs to be to obtain the one G5 slot for what used to be called a BCS bowl (got no idea what the new buzzword is). To do that, you not only need to win your conference's championship, you need to be the highest rated champion of the G5 conferences. Beating a quality G5 school like NIU rather than a steaming pile like Idaho or NMSU makes that a little more likely.

with the new playoff format, it will be tough if we schedule who we think will be a top program from another conference like the MAC a few years out, only to have that time come around and they aren't the best in the MAC anymore, but hey, we gotta start somewhere right?
This year it looks like MARSHALL of the C-USA could sneak in the back door to the ACCESS BOWL as we all beat up on each other in conference and challenging ourselves OoC.
EDIT: No disrespect to UCF, but in 2013 it was first Fresno St., then NIU's spot to lose -- then again that was the BCS

I wonder who Sterk will schedule for next year's OOC home games
Its official. MWC vs MAC. Maybe its a recruiting trick to get into Chicago?
San Diego State and Northern Illinois have agreed to play a home-and-home series in football. The Aztecs will travel to DeKalb, Ill., in 2016 and host the Huskies in 2017.
The schools have played each other four times, with SDSU winning all of the games. Those were long ago, with the last meeting coming in 1971, when Don Coryell was the head coach and the Aztecs won 30-10.
The Huskies are not preseason patsies. Playing in the Mid-American Conference’s Western Division, Northern Illinois has gone 24-4 overall and 16-0 in conference the last two seasons. The Huskies lost to Bowling Green in the last season’s MAC championship game and played in San Diego’s Poinsettia Bowl, falling 21-14 to Mountain West Mountain Division champion Utah State.
In 2016, the Aztecs have non-conference home games against Cal and New Mexico State. In ’17, they are scheduled to play at Arizona State.

Either way, in the national scope, lose, and we just lost to a MAC team. Win, and we were supposed to. When we are trying to fight for G5 supremacy, an HnH with NIU doesn't do us any favors.

A home and home with NIU? Kind of a backwards move, IMO. A regional team, such as Idaho or NMSU, maybe I could understand. A backward move? When one looks at how we and NIU have done since 2000, it would appear that it's NIU that would be taking a backward step by scheduling SDSU. Look at the records. . .
Won/Lost records, 2000-2013: .....NIU: 114-63 .....SDSU: 72-98
Won/Lost records, last 4 seasons: .....NIU: 46-10 .....SDSU: 34-18
Conference Championships: .....NIU: 5 Division championships 2 Conference championships (MAC) .....SDSU: 1 Co-Conference championship (MWC)
Wins over schools from the Power 5 conferences:
.....NIU: 2001 Wake Forest 2003 Maryland, Alabama, Iowa State 2009 Purdue 2010 Minnesota 2012 Kansas 2013 Iowa, Purdue
.....SDSU: 2011 Washington State
Bowl games:
.....NIU: 2004 Silicon Valley Classic vs Troy: W 2006 Poinsettia Bowl vs TCU: L 2008 Independence Bowl vs LA Tech: L 2010 International Bowl* vs So. Florida: L 2010 Humanitarian Bowl vs Fresno St.: W 2012 GoDaddy.com Bowl* vs Arkansas St.: W 2013 Orange Bowl* vs Florida State: L 2013 Poinsettia Bowl vs Utah St.: L * played in January.
.....SDSU 2010 Poinsettia Bowl vs Navy: W 2011 New Orleans Bowl vs Louisiana: L 2012 Poinsettia Bowl vs BYU: L 2013 Potato Bowl vs Buffalo: W
Looks to me like Northern Illinois has been the better program for at least one and a half decades. And don't forget that the Huskies were in a BCS bowl and we didn't get close. Oh, yes, one more thing; NIU was ranked in the Top-15 a couple of times, something that we haven't done for decades.

From an NIU fan, I look forward to playing SDSU in DeKalb and also in San Diego over the next couple years! This is a great scheduling technique for both schools in regards to how the college football system has been set up.
To all the naysayers who obviously know nothing about NIU, Jordan Lynch was only our QB for the past two years. We have had FOUR straight years of 11+ wins. And with any G5 conference, there are bottom feeders that make our schedules look weak and that includes the MAC, MWC, Sun Belt, and even the AAC.
Anyways, I am pumped about this announcement and look forward to the one and one series our AD's have scheduled!

While we were playing TCU, Utah and BYU, they were playing in the MAC. Can't say much about our OOC, but we usually play teams with national implications, their best win was what, against Bama? 4 win Bama? I am not even saying they are bad. I am saying that your stats have confounding factors, and still, NIU/SDSU does no favors. If it makes you feel better, it does them little either, I suppose.
