You do realize the irony of this post, right? What's ironic about it? If you're saying that this sounds like SDSU, yes, I realize it. It would be ironic only had I claimed that SDSU was a good or great team. After all this time we should be good. Next year, yet one more year into this rebuild, no one should be expecting (or accepting) a loss to a .500 ACC team either here, there, or on the moon. Same goes double for Oregon State, who will be even worse next year than they were this year. Do you think osu will be worse? They return 19 starters. Was hoping their qb would go pro, but looks like he's staying - and he is an nfl caliber qb.

Outside of UNC being an ACC school that wins about half of its conference games, what is/are the factual basis(es) for your first two statements? UNC is noy as good as BSU was last year, not quite as good as the Beavers were this year, so I think we will fit in real jice against them. No reason we can't win. I agree that we can win, and I hope we do win. I just don't see a factual basis for thinking the team will win or expecting them to win; hence my question to JYP. I'm also not sure that 2014 UNC is going to be worse than 2012 BSU. They bring back some real talent.

Thanks for pointing this critical factoid out. Kind of stunts the rant, eh? Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards

It will be either Year Four or (in Rocky's opinion) Year Six of the rebuild. Certainly we'll be able to handle a team like this at that point. We should have beat Oregon State this year. Heck I thought we'd go 11-1 this season but I guess I was a year too soon. We'll be ruminating over the same dilemma in year 9 of his "rebuild".

Do you think osu will be worse? They return 19 starters. Was hoping their qb would go pro, but looks like he's staying - and he is an nfl caliber qb. I was probably hasty in saying that they WILL be worse. However, I don't see anything to indicate that they'll be on anyone's NC watch list. They return 19 starters. Are you sure that's a good thing? We returned 16 (I think) starters this year and did worse than last year. As for Mannion, I don't know how good he is. I've seen a lot of guys throw for 450 yards against nobodies and then for half that many against more talented teams. Seems to me that if he were that good, then someone important would have advised him to declare for the draft by now. Presumably we will be one year better. Yes, the Aztec's play football in a vacuum, where they are the only team who can get better and recruit talent... seriously JYP... it's not like they are playing teams who also aren't trying to win all these games. Playing UNC, especially all the way across the country, is not a game fans should 'expect' the team to win... if we keep following your train of thought when would the Aztec's be due to win a National Championship? (do you guys do this just for fun?)

(do you guys do this just for fun?) A national championship isn't a realistic expectation, nor would it be if we were in a power conference. Beating North Carolina in football shouldn't be beyond any fan's "expectations" at this point. Hopefully the coaching staff expects to win too. I like you and almost everyone here but I don't like the mentality that we should be preparing for losses, inflating mediocre opponents into world beaters just so that we can excuse failure if it happens. When Rocky started, he stated that five years was enough to get a program to a BCS-buster level. Obviously that was unrealistic and no one here (not that I know of anyway) is demanding anything close to that. Beating UNC and Oregon State is nothing close to that. You seem like a good guy too so nothing personal meant... however just a few things... I just happen to believe that the other team is trying to win too. the aztec's don't play in a vacuum... I also believe that both UNC and OSU are more well known schools & have more $$, therefore I believe it is easier to recruit to those schools than SDSU... I also don't think relative to SDSU either are 'mediocre'... I also don't take everything or anything much a coach says to the media as being meaningful so it doesn't really matter to me what Rocky stated... I also know that teams traveling across 3 time zones generally lose the games they play... so for me as a fan to 'expect' SDSU to win in this case is not something I think is realistic... if you want to think the Aztecs should win every game they play so that you can record it as a failure in your mind that is your choice... I don't expect the Aztecs to win every game although I would like it if they did... Currently, to me, the Aztecs are a decent team that I enjoy watching play even if they are frustrating at times... I believe SDSU is and always has been behind the eight ball... can they get out from behind it? who knows, but given the current environment I sure don't expect it... if you think that's me preparing for a loss that is certainly your option... I think I am being realistic... So I'll end this rant by saying have a happy new year... I do hope all your expectations come true!

I think that folks on here don't understand UNC football and where it is. UNC has recruited very very well the last few years. To think that this will be an easily winnable game is short sighted. We will have to fly across the country and then likely face a 9am PST start time against a team that returns a bunch of talent. We certainly won't be favored to win the game by Vegas so why do folks expect/think that we should win?
I think that we will have a good team next year but to believe that our fans should "expect" to win at UNC is ridiculous and shows a lack of understanding of both UNC's team as well as ours.

which I do not expect to happen. Are you going with the "even a blind squirrel gets a nut" approach? I'm thinking 0-2. History PROVES me right. Your History does not play games, people do. It only reflects past History, and does not predict the future. North Carolina can be a very tough team to play at their place, but surprises do happen. I still have trouble thinking of the Tar Heels as a true football power. Their BB team is great, but football doesn't impress me much. I may need more education on their records in football.

I'm confused. Does "expect to win" mean the same for UNC as for NAU?
I believe that we will split the games against NC and OS and go 3-1 OOC. I'll be disappointed if we lose both (less so if we at least give them a scare) and ecstatic if we win both games.
I expect the players to be well coached, play hard, and represent SDSU with class, win or lose.
Go Aztecs

Like SDSU, UNC started slow and then came on strong. They were splitting time with their QB's and then the starter went down due to injury. Williams is the starter now and he's dangerous, but inconsistent. Don't let the record fool you, they have plenty of talent. They brought in a couple of highly ranked classes recently and return some good players too. Plus, they will be at home and we travel cross country. I'll be at the game sporting my red and black, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if we pull off the win.

We are over our head @ Chapel Hill, but with a week off, I think we have a decent shot @ Corvallis. Beavers have a veteran senior QB, but so do we. 3-1 OOC would be as treat for us all, has not happened in............how long?

Won't be surprised if/when we win. We have a talented team with a chip on their shoulder, so did EIU

This detail is already knowable -- 8 PM EST kick on ESPNews. Agree with your analysis. This is a swing year for us. "Next year" to me is 2015 and we should be good then for sure. Lots of RsF will get their feet wet this season.

We could be in for trouble with North Carolina, but you never know what can happen for sure. History doesn't play football, people do, and just because events have happened before is no sure sign that they will happen again. I actually like that no one thinks we have a chance in H--l! We have a QB, and an offense that might just make the plays at the right time to win. At least, I'm not counting them out yet. I'll wait until we get to the game first.
