The Padres also got Reymond Fuentes in the Adrian deal. He was a former #1 pick that has under performed in the Padres minor leagues, so far. 2011 .275 .342 .369 .711 Lake Elsinore at 20 years old. 2012 .218 .301 .302 .604 San Antonio at 21 years old. 2013 .347 .422 .505 .927 San Antonio at 22 years old (118 PA). He is still the youngest player on the team. His stats are certainly not definitive but encouraging and something to watch. Maybe Kelly and Cashner are not the only MLB pieces we will see from this trade.

Fuentes is the youngest *active* player on the team since Rymer Liriano and Adys Portillo are on the DL--Liriano for the season and Portillo who has already started throwing again.
Fuentes has looked pretty good at the plate, but he is lost in the outfield. He's playing right field and it's ugly. He also has been picked off a lot and looks like he has a mental block on pick-off attempts. I've never seen a guy freeze on *every* attempt while he's on base. I expect he'll get tested at AAA before the season's over.

Do you live in or around San Antonio? Do you see this kid having some pop in his bat?

Hence the words "so far", "118 PA", "not definitive", "something to watch". I think we all understand that April in "AA" at 22 does not a career make.

Some pitching to be excited about between Donn Roach, Burch Smith and Matt Andriese. Fuentes is "fine." I don't see him having much power at all in terms of homerun potential, but he's not a "punch and Judy," either. Thus far he's been able to really capitalize on mistakes, pulling several doubles into right on pitches up in the zone. Word is he's working a lot harder this year, taking the game and his development much more seriously. Realistically he's probably a 4th outfielder type. edited for clarity, thanks Bill.

Texas League Batting Stats Notice who is second. Fuentes is the second youngest on his team (since Wisler was promoted) and is second in the entire league in batting. A year ago he looked like a bust and now looks like he is back in the Padres top 15. He is a good fielding CF who draws walks and steals bases. With Fuentes and Cashner doing well, the AGon trade pieces are looking much better this year.

I see the average, OBP and tools, but I just don't know that he's much more than a fourth or fifth outfielder. He's played mostly RF for the Missions, where he looks lost, but he looked better in the few games I've seen where he's played CF, but I don't remember any plays either way. Looking at his numbers, they're better than I feel he's played, so maybe it's just bias that makes me remember negative more than positive. I'd be happy to be wrong about him.

He is still quite young. He turned 22 in Feb. Very young for "AA". San Antonio has been rotating their 3 outfielders around the outfield because all can play CF. That may have taken its toll. The other two are. Everett Williams (also 22) was a very high draft choice a few years ago. Rico Noel (24) was voted the best defensive player in the Padres Org and leads the Texas league in stolen bases (28 SB, 3 CS).

I like Williams' approach and overall game a decent bit, I just question the tools; Noel is a "punch and Judy" hitter with a terrible load. His swing with two strikes is way smoother than with 0 or 1 strike, but I honestly don't see Noel ever developing an offensive game to speak of. He is lightning fast though, no denying it. To my knowledge Williams hasn't played CF this season--I assume the Padres are telling San Antonio to put Fuentes in CF more to see if he can play the position since he's clearly not a right fielder and if Maybin doesn't pan out, that's a realistic position of need. Noel is a terrific defensive centerfielder, the difference there between Fuentes and Noel is night and day obvious, but he'll never hit.

Update on Reymond Fuentes:
.332 .415 .472 .887 (281 PA)
.415 OBP for a top of the order player who steals bases is outstanding. He has 23 steals and has been caught 8 times.
His ISO has been below .100 for his entire MiLB career but is .140 this year.
He was reduced his strikeouts considerably:
BB/K Rates 2011 "A+" 44/117 (554 PA).376 2012 "AA" 52/133 (525 PA) .391 2013 "AA" 31/53 (281 PA) .585

Maybe Kelly and Cashner are not the only MLB pieces we will see from this trade. LOL let's hope so. It's looking like we got fleeced in the AGon and Latos deals. We never could have signed AGon and we now have Andrew Cashner (3.81 ERA in 14 starts), Casey Kelly (Padres #4 prospect), and Reymond Fuentes in exchange. Not exactly fleeced. AGonzalez .298 .353 .470 .822 (AGon stats in LA) Padres 1B .287 .338 .456 .794 (Blanks, Guzman, and Alonzo when playing 1B). You may think the difference between the two is worth $21 million a year. It isn't. AGon contract2012 $21M - 30 years old 2013 $21M - 31 years old 2014 $21M - 32 years old 2015 $21M - 33 years old 2016 $21M - 34 years old 2017 $21.5M - 35 years old 2018 $21.5M - 36 years old That contract has a chance of becoming quite an albatross. He already is performing well below the level he was at when he signed.

You realize that you spin nearly every single move the padres make in their favor, yet we still suck, and you defend our front office. Bill, somewhere along the line there has to be accountability right?

Meaning that the Padres do not need to strategically sign players to maximize the distribution of talent. They can spend as much as they want. So from a fan's perspective, how can it be a mistake not to sign somebody who would upgrade your team? Adrian Gonzalez would be a significant upgrade offensively and defensively from what we have. There is nothing to say that just because we got Cashner in the deal, that we would be somehow worse off. what if we signed Adrian AND we signed a free agent pitcher that's better than Cashner? Why are you so opposed to holding the ownership and front office of the Padres accountable? How many more losing seasons would it take from the Padres before you agreed with the rest of us that they have done a poor job of running the team?

You can't really think that signing a player to a $21 million a year contract would not effect the ability of the team to sign other players. Having no effect - you can spend without any opportunity cost - is how young folks with a new credit card think, unfortunately. Boston management finally understood that and traded their mistake to LAD. AGon may be slightly better now, but how about when he is 34 and still is owed $64 million.

Any quality hitters the Padres have in the system is a good thing. They don't even have to play defense. Within a few years, the DH WILL be in the NL.

I wonder how the Dodgers feel since James Loney is hitting better than AGon for $19 million a year less.

You think he is still the gold glove first baseman we knew? He has more errors in his 712 innings this year, than his 2,600 previous innings. Only Joey Votto has a lower fielding percentage at first than AGon this year. By far the lowest of his career. Players tend to field better when they are younger. Alonzo has fielded great with only 1 error.
