great block. may have saved the game. Fixed. And it wasn't just the block. He reached his long arm over the baseline to grab the ball as it was going out of bounds. The FSU dude was still looking around wondering where the ball went as Shep was dribbling away with it. If Shep doesn't corral the ball after the block -- without committing a foul or knocking it out of bounds, mind you -- FSU gets another whack at the piñata.

I throw the "may have" in there just because we don't know what "may have" happened later. And yes, the save (a lost art in my book- blocking the ball AND getting procession) was just as good as the block.

great block. may have saved the game. keep working on those FTs The block was incredible. Rotating from the weak side to just erase a lay up attempt. Showing that he's not just a great on ball defender but can also rotate well.

As Shepard matures and enhances his offensive game, he could be a triple-double guy on a regular basis. It's going to be key for him to spend 4 years under Fisher developing his game. MCW at Syracuse would be a pretty good comparison. MCW is a much better shooter but Shep has a couple inches on him and is just as good a passer. Not sure about the handles. MCW will be a lottery pick, that is sheps upside if all comes together. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using proboards

I'm officially a believer now. He may make some freshmen mistakes as the year pans out, but the skills are there, the physical talent is there, the attitude is getting there and the maturity will continue to grow. Dude has tons of potential and this game really shows how great our coaches can let players flourish.

Everything MCW does looks effortless. Shepard has a long way to go offensively.

When he makes a free throw, he smiles like he won the lottery or something. He should expect to make his free throws every time and be surprised when he doesn't. He's not allowed to be happy when he makes a free throw? When he gets good enough, he won't be that excited to make a free throw. It's equivalent to our fans rushing the court if we beat Fresno State during a conference game (at home). It sends a message that we didn't expect it to happen and it was a REALLY big deal. We are above that. I'll tell you what though, right now I get really happy when he actually makes a free throw!

Shep can end up being the best Aztec to ever put the jersey on. Dude is full of potential and I get such a calm feeling watching him knowing the "bonehead" plays will be non-existant. His ability to see the bigs down load is incredible. Once he becomes a bonafide outside threat, look out...

I break the Fresno State game down into two halves: Before Winston's eye scratch and after.
They were on cruise control until that went down, getting easy looks and running the floor beautifully. The Bulldogs were on the ropes. During his absence and also once he came back they never quite seemed to have the same flow and rotation they had during the first 10 minutes or so of the game, so James' shooting became critical.
Great block by Winston at the end. Block, control, possession, game.

The WS - MCW comparison is pretty good. But to make it a little closer to apples-to-apples, let's see what WS is like next season and compare that to MCW *this* season... (MCW is a Soph right now, correct?)

My intended message, in more direct way is, "his free throw shooting sucks and needs to improve or he will lose us games." The smiling when he makes a shot just appears to be a side effect.

He seems satisfied when he makes one of two free throws. That is unacceptable and could have cost us the game. Other than that, he had a solid game. I noticed that on just about all of his first free throw attempts that he took, he was either talking, or jawing with someone and then he'd grab the ball and shoot it. He missed most of his first attempts. It didn't look like the concentration was there in his eyes. I kept track of it. It's immaturity that I hope will improve, because the FT misses only because he's smack talking is inexcusible.

Rushing the court is a way of saying we did something amazing that needs to seriously be celebrated. Smiling after making a free throw is saying "cool, I made that free throw." so much this

The reason he missed his first FT and made the second was because he's a 50% FT shooter. Has been since he got here. Needs to work on it. Smile. No smile. Smack. No smack. And, BTW, it's all about form. Stop with the pseudo-Rick-Berry-shrink gibberish.

I gazed longingly into his eyes after every free throw, and saw the telltale signs of a heart broken from the criticism he receives on Aztecmesa. He smiles to hide the pain. Please leave Shepard alone.

Anyone who has ever shot two free throws in a row can tell you it is easier to make the second one than the first one.
