Basketball schools leaving means nothing for SDSU football.
It's still the same, If the TV money is there SDSU stays. If not we are out.

It still remains to be seen how the departure of the basketball schools will affect the value of the TV contract. It's perhaps probable that you're right, and that it won't make a dent in the football revenue. We just don't really know, because the value of the BE TV rights seems to drop further every day. I think we're getting right up to the precipice of where the move no longer makes any sense financially, and we'll end up back in the MWC.

I think we do have a good idea, and it seems that the $60-80 million figure thrown out there by CBS Sports is pretty accurate. Otherwise, as the above story clearly indicated, the C-7 schools would not have opted to break away. They would have stuck it out if the contract were worth what we were all told it would be.

How do we know it's accurate? Because one outlet reported it? It doesn't matter what the estimates are anyway. The only number that matters is the real number and SDSU will wait for that number then decide. Everything else is just guessing and a waste of time.

Because that report was the catalyst for the C-7 schools to break away. They were content to wait it out until that $60-80 m figure came out. You would think that as conference insiders, the university presidents and AD's would have access to that information to be able to verify it. If there was still hope that they could get anywhere close to the $100 m range, then they would have stayed.

Staying in the MWC would be a disaster for the football program and the athletics department as a whole.

I think the $60-80 million will end being high. I am wondering what the drop dead date is to return to the MWC? I think it would be a benefit to play one football season in the Big East to try and get the BCS bid by winning the league. I think that is a real opportunity within reach. After that, not sure where this goes, but an Orange bowl (or similar) appearance sure would be sweet!

Sure. Sugar Bowl? Probably. But Orange Bowl all the way in Miami? smh And I agree, that $60-80 million figure will end up being on the high side.

As a member of the Catholic faith maybe it would be cool for the soon to be EXBE teams to align with the WCC members to form a really cool Jesuit and Catholic powerhouse conference. Probably have the Pope's blessing and a sh*tank of financial support. Of course BYU would be history. (Never much cared for them in the WCC anyway). Yes? No?

Everyone piled on the Dodd report and uses it in every article as some form of fact. It isn't any more authoritative than any other report previous. We have time to see. I think there is momentum behind a western division and those things take time to work through. We'll see. Next year will be fun with a nice change of scenery at a minimum, with a nice pay day at the end. Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards

Nobody but the TV execs and Aresco/Bevilacqua knows $$ details. In particular since negotiations have been interrupted and changes are happening daily. I have no doubt that these two TV experts will get the best possible TV deal. What that is I have no idea... Just about anything is better than what the MWC can offer currently.

Until the members of the new conference are set, there is no way any tv deal can get done. This is especially true if UNLV, Fresno, et. al. become members of the new conference and SDSU and Boise become "full" members in basketball and the olympic sports. Aresco would be remiss if he was not exploring those possibilities especially given the huge amount of tv content an "all-sports" conference would offer. And I think a new tv deal would be closer to $8-10 million per school if it's an all-sports conference.

A lot of things make no sense.
1. Are the C7 presidents making moves based on CBS reports from Dodd? Wow, they are rubes. 2. I am pretty sure ESPN put a number on the table at the end of the negotiating period. If the numbers were not acceptable to the C7 why continue on for months and add ECU and Tulane?
I think this article is over dramatized with facts stretched and laced with guesses. I refuse to believe that the C7 made these huge decisions to leave based on fish wrap. I refuse to believe that they were rubber stamping schools and then woke up to see Tulane in bed.

I think there is momentum behind a western division and those things take time to work through. We'll see. Next year will be fun with a nice change of scenery at a minimum, with a nice pay day at the end. And in the final analysis, does it matter whether it's accurate? 1. SDSU needs to get the heck out of the MWC because it's dying. That conference has lost Utah, BYU and TCU and is adding Utah State, which can't manage to ever average 20K fans per game and is located in a "city" of 50K, and SJSU, which is located in a metropolis which ignores it, as evidenced by an average attendance of <10,500 in a 10-win season and which just hired as it's HEAD coach our ST coach's successor. Plus, there are roomers the MWC is about to add Tulsa, which has the second lowest student population of the 124 FBS universities, and the University of Texas-El Armpit. 2. Even if SDSU gets just $4M per year in TV revenue, that's five times what we're now earning in the MWC. FIVE times. 3. The way the new football playoff system is being set up, just one of the five non-"power" conferences will get its champion in a big boy bowl. And when, not if, the system evolves into an 8-team playoff, you can bet only one of the non-power conferences will get its champion into that. This new Best of the Rest conference has the potential to be so much better than the other four that the great majority of time, the BoR champion will go to the big money bowl. I could add other factors but it's just silly to argue that SDSU would be better off staying in the MWC.

Staying in the MWC would be a disaster for the football program and the athletics department as a whole. Is this only because of the money or is there another reason it would be such a disaster? What would be our options if the BE does not bring the $$ that were hoped for? Please don't say start a new conference because I don't see any teams willing to do that right now.

To me I think there are two realistic directions for SDSU - neither include staying in the MWC. First is that Big East Football will move forward as-is and second is the 'new' national conference that UConn and UCinn have been talked about leading.
