My final "soap box" comment on this is to look at the bigger picture. Like others have said, if it's not your thing, that's fine, but no need to stop and bash it just because. I assume most of you are like me and find athletics to be a huge positive in life. Not only the enjoyment of watching and attending, but the life lessons, living a healthy lifestyle, friendships and character building that playing sports provide (and provided many of us, not matter what level). While I don't have any kids myself yet, I'm a big believer in passing those positive attributes on to my nieces/nephews, little cousins and friends kids -- as I'm sure many of you do as well with your own kids. That said, while the girls enjoy going to men's games, they really love the women's games, not only because of the whole "girl power" thing, but because it's a different experience and one of those differences is that the female athletes (a generalization, I know) seem to go farther out of their way to be approachable. Yes, kids (and some adults too) go high-five the men's bball team as they leave the court to the locker room which is awesome, but it's not practical to have 12,414 meet the players after each game. With the women's bball team, my niece is on a first name basis with most of them and a few of the soccer, lacrosse and softball players too. I think it's cool, but to her you'd think she won the lottery each time a player came over to say "hi" to her or ask how school or her soccer team is doing. So, you get the idea. While it may not be your cup of tea, there's no need to crap on it because they too are athletes who worked hard to get where they are and they're the role models for the next generation. As I've said before, I suspect it's easy to talk crap when you're 22 and single, but when you're 32 and your daughter(s) are into it, you should probably be a little more objective. For the record. this thread was started by someone "crapping" on those who choose not to attend. sleeping dogs and all that....

And as has been hashed out here before, put the women's games right before the men's and you'll up attendance while maybe gaining some new fans.

The only reason women's college basketball even exists is because the government requires it. Title IX requires they play in Viejas just like the men even though they would be much better served playing in Peterson. Midnight Madness would have been so much better without so much time being spent on the women's team.

A lot of The Show members line up hours before games. If the women's games were right before, there would be a lot of The Show, as well as other fans, cheering them on and creating a great atmosphere like they do for the men.

Didn't realize Title Icks mandated they play at Viejas instead of Peterson gym . I went to games when Beth Burns was here the first time and the games were played at Peterson. They were averaging about 1000 people a game Beth's last year here. And Peterson gym was rocking. The team is better now, but they're lucky to get half the crowd as before. So yeah, I believe the smaller venue created a better atmosphere, which in turn created more excitement and brought in more fans. But, Title Icks or not, no way in heck are the women going to go back to playing in Peterson.

At least for a couple of the non-conference games they should do this.

when Beth came back I went out and picked up two season tickets. Most of the time I go by myself. You are right, it is a different game. It's not slower it just appears that way because there isn't all the showmanship like there is in the men's game and not any real above the rim play. Slower, on way, but different yes! Funny part is the men use to play the same game years back. There were no slam dunks or sky hooks just solid below the rim fundamentals. To tell you how old I am, no one shot a jumper and free throws we're best done two handed in my early years. The thing about the women's game is it is to similar to the old time men's game.
So, even though it is different in some ways, it is still basketball. The fundamentals have not changed. That is what I go to see, the fast breaks, the bulldog guarding, the great pass down in that leads to a lay up. No, the fundamentals are still the same for women, but the flamboyance is quite different from the men's game. Go for the style not the flash and you might just like what you see. (unedited) Our Lady Aztecs are Aztecs for life too and deserve at least your respect for the positive way they represent the school, and the alumni.

"Under Title IX, a school is obligated to ensure that the overall benefits and treatments of the female and male programs are comparable. Scheduling, including the scheduling of game and practice times, is one benefit that must be equally provided to the men’s and women’s programs. Specifically, men’s and women’s programs must have equal access to “prime-time” game and practice times. The nature of what constitutes “prime time” may be different depending on the sport, season and school, but a common example of a compliance issue would be if the men’s basketball team played all of its games at 7 p.m. on a Friday nights while the women always played at 5:30 p.m."

You can make us fund it but you can't make us watch it. At least not yet. They should listen to Geno Auriemma; lower the basket and shorten the shot clock. Wow that would actually be really really good. i mean coming from a great coach like that!?! Besides the only reason the hoop is so high now is because of Wilt Chamberlain right? That should not apply to women's bball one bit. There would be dunks and much faster, exciting play. Where's the petition!

I understand what you are trying to say, and I think it USED to be true of womens basketball. However, if you watch it now, the fundamentals are not that good. I am not saying they, as Aztecs, do not deserve our support. I am saying that womens basketball is in a transition period from slow, fundamental players to more athletic players. However, the skills have only caught up to a small percentage of those athletic players. The vast majority do many, many things wrong and if you combine those mistakes with poor shooting, the game becomes hard to watch. Two years ago, we had a great team full of polished players. Right now, we have a couple good players and a bunch of very raw players. I will support them but it IS hard to watch much of the time.

San Diego fans are just wack, it has nothing with these ladies abilities. They work and ball hard just like the men, but since there's no hype surrounding them, no one bothers to support. If these ladies had a UConn or Baylor type run, Viejas would be packed. Its more about being seen than supporting fellow Aztecs.

Even more disappointing are the few hundred at the 18K+ T&M at the MWCT. Even sadder are the so-called "Aztec for Life"ers who would rather piss away their $ at the tables than support the NCAA tourney-bound ladies (even though in some cases they're already there in Vegas and have the tourney package tix).
Hey, I get it: women's game can't come close to the excitement of the men's game; but there comes a time when your team/school needs you. Suck it up, "I bleed red and black"ers!
