Rather than a bunch of random thoughts all over the place, I am curious what we learned from this game (remembering that it was just game 1 against a quality opponent)?
One thing I learned is that we still have a long ways to go when it comes to team chemistry on the court. Chase has got to step up and take the leadership role and be the floor general this year for us to be really successful.
Add your thoughts...

That they should play outdoor games on blacktops, not courts

Syracuse was long and they had quick hands. SDSU couldn't pass in the paint, too many turnovers.

If Rahon is healthy, because of his experience he is one of our better players and will get his minutes

We miss Shelton's leadership and on and off the court IMO

Syracuse is really, really good. They made a statement today that the final four goes through them. Aztecs have alot of pieces but not working engine yet. Steve the mechanic has to go under the hood to fix the clangs and bangs. Our three point shot is missing and will be next seen on a milk carton. We have to stop reading our press. We played a flat boring game however we were Florida Atlantic.

Learned a few things, though nothing groundbreaking.
We shouldn't play the greatest zone team the country has ever known in conditions where outside shooting is nearly impossible.
I'll give a pass to our free throw shooting today due to the wind, but I've also seen in the exhibition games that we need to do better on the charity stripe.
We lost by less than we should have, and our boys played hard until the end.
Jamaal is still a spazz
OBrien is better than I thought, reminds me a bit of Green at this stage last year. Tough, good rebounder, can't make a layup. Green corrected that, OBrien will too.
We freaking had an opportunity to play an "event" game against Syracuse in SD. That's awesome. We didn't win, oh well. If I'm going to take one thing away from this, it's that we've come so far as a program to have an opportunity to play in a game like this. And I won't overthink it either. Michigan State lost in a similar situation last year. I wouldn't mind replicating the year they had.

Defense will be pretty good except for when we face true bigs. As a whole we won't be a great shooting team.

We have too many bad dribblers resulting in turnovers. I thought at one point of the game X Thames should have taken over and should have done his PG duties. Right now only two people should be bring up the ball. That is X and Shep. No one else including Maal because he is always a play away from a offense of foul.

Another thing is the mental toughness and slow starts to the game. The last three games we have not shown up until half time. Hopefully the boys learned alot. At least this was not the 1 st round on the NCAA and the problems can be fixed through out the season. Syracuse was definitely the better team today.

Honestly, I don't think we learned anything.
I think we should put about as much weight on this game as you would put on an exhibition game. With the wind, sun, etc. it's basically impossible to really judge how good either team is. And that's not just me making excuses for the Aztecs. A Syracuse friend of mine who also went to the game said the exact same thing about Cuse.
I think it was an amazing event and I'm really happy I was able to go but I don't think the outcome or what happened during the game can tell us anything about what the rest of the season will be like.

I went for a good long run after that game. Maybe the team should take one too.
What I was impressed with was their unwillingness to give up. Would've been easy to do so, especially when they realized they were outmanned at every position AND they were not going to make up the early deficit. That they kept it going for the whole game, despite their disadvantage, spoke volumes.
As many have already said, it's a meaningless exercise to try and glean anything from this event. It's too bad the score wasn't closer. It's too bad it wasn't more fun for the Aztecs as a team. But it's not something to dwell on.
They didn't give up, and that's something for the "win" column.

Syracuse won this game fair and square. Syracuse style of play would allow team to play in the rain, snow and windy conditions on an Air- Craft carrier.
"IF" and IF was a fifth of Whiskey, I would be drunk! There is no degree of certainty that had the conditions been ideal, Aztecs would have won this game today.
There is no excuse whatsoever for a team to miss 19 free throws! Yes, had this game been played indoors, the outcome may have been different, but we will never know.
Here's what I do know. Based on their play today, Aztecs can play with any team in the Country! Rebounds - Orangemen 45 Aztecs 44. (20 offensive). Last season, Aztecs had no frontline, now they do.
Last season, as a team, Aztecs did not get to the free-throw line. Today, Aztecs got to the free throw line 33 times against a team playing a 2-3 Zone. This is a tremendous feat for the Aztecs against a frontline that blocked over 10 shots!
Now, the Aztecs players should have confidence in driving the ball to the basket instead of relying on shooting 3 points shots. Shooting.
Yes, the Aztecs shooters could not shoot the ball in the Pacific Ocean today, but Syracuse's 2-3 Zone, along with weather conditions and player's confidence had a lot to do with arguably the worst perimeter shooting I have ever seen!
If you watched the game, then you would have noticed that Syracuse Zone did not give Aztecs shooters "clean looks" at the basket. Also, indoors or outdoors, what happened to the art of shooting the bank shot?
Aztecs turned Syracuse over 14 times. This is a great stat, which will enhance Aztecs running game if they learn how to run/fastbreak. Why set up your offense against a 2-3 Zone when you cannot shoot?
I still believe that Aztecs are a talented team with depth at every position. Issue for the Aztecs and Coaching staff is to build on the positives from this game. Go Aztecs!
