Maybe we can use our collective energies to think of ways to promote better attendance for football. Some of the ideas might just be feasible enough that our Athletic Department runs with them.
So play marketing director and throw out some ideas. Remember that costs are an issue.
I'd like to see us give a voucher for a free game ticket for every game to EVERY kid playing pop warner football in San Diego County. Before the season send the vouchers out to every pop warner team. The kid would be free but will be bringing an adult with them who will have to pay for a ticket, parking, food, etc.
This wouldn't cost anything and would generate some additional community involvement. It would also establish a bond with kids who might be future recruits. Many times, current recruits from SD will say they remember going to Aztec games as kids. Get the kids hooked and as fans at an early age and reap the rewards in future years - not only in recruits but in future fans who will come back and pay for tickets or may become students.

;D The weak response from todays alums to actualy buy tickets and attend games may stem from not going to football games as a student. They just don't have an affinity for AZTEC Football or athletics.
At yesterdays game the seats were filled with parents and kids happy to come to the game because the kids were going to perform, but guest what they were exposed to the whole "AZTEC" football experience. I believe that will go a long way toward promoting a positive in these kids and parents about SDSU as a whole. Therefore: if the students don't use their tickets lets give them to groups that will want to come to the games for free either as spectators or other non profits like the group at yesterdays game. At least the paid for tickets will help to give some a free experience or gain positive support for the future...walkonfan...GO STATE!.

Maybe they can get some tailgating events of some kind to attract students to the stadium. I agree that they should do deals to high school and pop warner players. It'll grow, really. I think next year, attendance will sky rocket with us having an aggressive ooc schedule and joining the BE.

The Q has to be turned into a fun, party atmosphere in order to gain more support from fans, students and alumni. If you look at other programs and the pre-game festivities and tailgates you can see where we are lacking. Our athletics, marketing and business programs should combine their objectives and see what programs and incentives to come up with. Granted so much of this is just tradition, if you look at some long time losing programs they still get the fans out, because it's fun. So many of our fans have never been exposed to this....plus many of them are just whinners, about the game time(s), weather, traffic etc..!! It's our problem, we need to work on resolving !! Go Aztec's..!!!

Simple solution! Take the concerts normally scheduled on campus, and redirect them to the stadium, to be partly performed at halftime, and the balance after the game. This will attract boatloads of fans and bring them to the game. Growing up, I always loved the Orange Bowl halftime shows, and envisioned the same happening at the Q. Don't know why no-one else has thought of this before. Concerts attract people from all over. Combine major artists with other performers that aren't so well known, or expensive, and you'll have a fun way to fill the Q. The ticket prices could be raised to make up any expenses of these concerts/performances like the tickets to the Sky Show. Half time and post game concerts could actually be dedicated to "Tribute Bands"... Types of performances could also include "Theme Nights", where everyone dresses the part of the theme... for example: 1.) Native folkloric Aztec dancers from Mexico, or a combination of different Native American dancing like on display at Knotts Berry Farm, and again, we encourage the public to wear Aztec or Indian headdresses and outfits. 2.) Musical groups like "Who's Bad", an inexpensive yet very popular Michael Jackson Ultimate Tribute Band, who's performed worldwide, including the Del Mar Fair. See examples below: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rx3oUupocKc&feature=relatedwww.youtube.com/watch?v=NdHJzOOkJ0o&feature=relatedwww.youtube.com/watch?v=uok0CfPpBX0&feature=relmfuwww.youtube.com/watch?v=KNKLI2r2n7w&feature=relmfuwww.youtube.com/watch?v=4XTMWZYDWH0&feature=endscreen&NR=1whosbadmusic.comand again, encourage those in attendance to dress up in their finest Michael Jackson look-a-like outfits. 3.) How about these bands that pay tribute to The Beatles: "Rain": www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6aixCBzn3s&feature=related www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6bKPZDvSFA&feature=related"The Fab Four": www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqZRNmKX658&feature=relatedwww.youtube.com/watch?v=GCMfYZ56B9U&feature=relmfu"Liverpool Legends": www.youtube.com/watch?v=WC2p8JfNZkM&feature=related4.) Make musical platforms available to new up and coming San Diego and Southern California bands. 5.) "Clean" yet very funny comedy acts like: "Brian Regan": www.youtube.com/watch?v=Am5Pq1SuddQ&feature=rellist&playnext=1&list=PLC851280AC9FB84A3www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX87ipNTiIY&feature=fvwrelAnd "Gabriel Iglesias": www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOQJiZ_g3Ho&feature=relmfuwww.youtube.com/watch?v=J29A9nBtp2Uwww.youtube.com/watch?v=c2owUI45FL0Those are some examples which could begin a San Diego tradition at the stadium during Aztec games. Once word gets out, SDSU games would become "a San Diego Traditional Outdoor Event", much more than the quintessential college football game. Combine the two... and you'll, "Fill the Q"!!! - Aztecjeff

How about some sort of athletic type of competition among the greek houses. Something like .... who can throw a football through a tire from 10-15 yards away; who can kick the longest field goal; a 40 yd race. The exact competition would not be announced until it is about to take place (so the frat houses would want to bring all their people). I wonder if something like this would be a big deal to the frats because of the competitive nature of the guys. (I really like the idea of bands performing at halftime and after the game)

The Greeks used to bring a ton of people to games, even if they came in a little late. They need to be encouraged to resume that tradition. The ROTC programs can be encouraged, other student groups as well. Have contests before the games, concerts, free stuff, halftime activities, etc. Can't be hard. I think it falls into Steve Schnall's area so we are in good hands there...Doug Case still there for the IFC? He's another ball of fire...

It doesn't just need to be about getting students there - we have a big stadium and lots of seats we can fill.

The weak response from todays alums to actualy buy tickets and attend games may stem from not going to football games as a student. They just don't have an affinity for AZTEC Football or athletics. I think that's a big part of it. AztecWilliam once said SDSU lost a generation of fans by allowing its football program to go in the crapper for an entire decade from 1999 to 2009. That's an over generalization obviously but I have since noticed that there are relatively few thirty-something fans who attend games. That said, I'll repeat my belief in what it will take to improve attendance: beat Boise - check - and win our bowl game this year against an opponent people care about - BYU in the P-Diddy Bowl would fill the bill. Get that second requirement done and I'll bet we average 40K per game in 2013.

I am a San Diego native and attended SDSU from 1999-2004. I believe football tickets cost $5 and basketball were $3 when I attended. More students attended when tickets had to be purchased which I find odd. One change I would like to see is to move the students from the corner/east endzone, to the lower, west endzone. Think of Viejas....students wait in line to be down near the court and closer to the visiting team's bench. I think that proximity to the field could create a more fun atmosphere than where they currently sit shoved up into the corner. Not a fix all for attendance, but a small step that could create a more fun experience and make students feel more connected to the game on the field. I know this creates problems with existing season seat holders, but just trying to think of some ideas.
