I realize you are answering literally what would make you 'comfortable' but I'm gonna guess if they switched to a standard 4-3 and lost all of the remaining games you would not be so comfortable. And you have to agree if the Aztec won all of their remaining games and then won a bowl game against a second tier BCS conference team (which is all they would play) it would be the best any Aztec team has done since Coryell was here.... so if that happened, even you would admit you were cool with RL even if they played the gimmicky D that they do. Yes?? I don't know why people would ever be satisfied playing in Podunk Bowl against Hillbilly U. We need to quit aspiring to mediocre bowls and 7-5 seasons and start beating quality opponents (or hell, for that matter, inferior opponents) on a regular basis. Spud, Just curious... which of the two of us (JYP and I) that you quoted here said what you wrote?

YOU know you constant mentioning of age is rather disrespectful do you . I am sure Rocky is in better shape than about 80% of the guys on this board. Would you turn down Mike Bellotti.? because he is old. I am 66 and had cancer and other issuers I can still do everything I could before just not as fast. If Rokcy is not doing well coaching its nort his age but other issues. fIre the following Nick Saban 60. Gary Pinknell 60, Steve Spurrerior 66 Frank Beamer 65 BIll Snyder 72 George O Leary 65 TOM O Brien 60 Paul Pasqualani 63 Dennis franchione 62 Larry Coker 63 Norm Chow 64 Ellis Jonson 62 Franks Solcih 67 MIke Bellotti will be 62 in December so do not hire him. Steveem, I can't speak for others, but my feeling about the age issue is that it's not so much of a problem with someone you KNOW has made it big time---like Fisher. But UNlike Fisher, Rocky has NEVER shown he's capable of reaching top levels in coaching or recruiting. And THAT is the issue. He's gotten to this age without the kind of track record we want and that tells you something about where he's likely going. In addition, I feel that basketball is less affected by the "age" thing. Gobledigoop. Rocky long was able to win at UNM....AT UNM for christ sakes. This is his second year as head coach. I simply think SDSU fans who have watched their program struggle for so long are just showing their petty fears that the team may return to it's losing ways, when it reality the team is still more then capable of 7-8 wins this season. That would be the first 3 game bowl eligible stretch that I can remember in a long time. Keep in mind, lost 4 yr starting QB, lost 2nd best RB in program history, lost our top linebacker (in a system where linebackers are essential to success), and our best kicker is a true freshman which is hurting our special teams play. I've actually played FB and also played baseball at the collegiate level and then professionally. The team on the field this year is maybe talented enough to win 6-7 games on their own. If they win anymore then that it is the coaching.

He'd have to move away from the 3-3-5. Yes?? Well, actually no. Haven't reviewed the whole thread, so maybe somebody beat me to this already, but if the question is, under what circumstances would I be comfortable with Rocky, I would have to say none. Rocky has convinced me he is destined to be a mid-level coach at best. We need to aspire to break through to something better than that. Such a breakthrough will require a talent I just don't think Long possesses, or ever will. If you're asking what would it take for us to vote to keep Rocky around, which is a very different question, then I would say that in the interest of what is just and fair, Rocky would deserve to be retained if the team hits 7 wins, and maybe even 6. I just wouldn't be able to justify canning such a good man if his team performs that well, especially given its history. But as he settled in for 2013 I would have mixed feelings, because I still believe he is not the coach to take us to where we want to go. Another year for Long would accomplish little and delay the inevitable.

And if you don't think he could do anything to make you feel better about being here than that is fine. It's your opinion. (You will note I still haven't said what I'd feel comfortable with - but, will admit, I would not be clamoring for his firing if he won out from here which included a bowl win.) (I replied to JYP because I knew he was being literal with the question.)

I am sure this thread will rapidly deteriorate into a 'Rocky sucks/no he doesn't' thread but I thought I would ask a question to try to somewhat change the subject. Given what you have seen this year from the staff and players, knowing the limitations that exist at this time (with both staff and players), and knowing who is remaining on the schedule - what would it take for you to become or remain comfortable with Rocky Long as the coach at SDSU?Honestly, I don't have an agenda with this question. I was thinking about this myself and as an Aztec fan I am disappointed in the results thus far, as all are. It would help if you were realistic in your answer like - 'win out and then win the LV Bowl' (vs a realistic team who would likely be there) - as opposed to an answer like, 'he'd have to win the National Championship' because obviously that is not possible and never was even if the Aztecs were undefeated this year. My last thought only is that you should really honestly be able to come up with something otherwise it seems a bit unfair and please do your best not to attack someone because you think he is being too easy or hard on RL. It's just someones opinion so no one really can be wrong. (Actually I do have an agenda, I am wondering how many posts it will take for this to turn into the 'rocky should stay/rocky should be fired' thread. I'm doing gambling research, kind of an over/under study.=) Beat UNR or Boise, win out other than that and win the bowl game. Even then I wouldn't be comfortable with Rocky given the about 150 game record he has as a D1 football coach, but I would be willing to give him 1 year in the big east.

What would it take for this season to be deemed a "successful" one for Rocky Long?
- We beat the consensus "tough" schools left on the slate. - The defense shows improvement. Win TO margin and sacks. - The offensive line improves in pass protection. - The continued involvement of our playmakers. Esp EZELL - Go bowling. - Give these god awful, recycled uniforms back to 1997.

Well, maybe you were joking in your response to JYP, but didn't you just opine that if Rock won out and got to a 2nd tier bowl all would be good? Regardless, the pro-Rock crowd seems to be happy with 2nd tier bowls and .500 seasons. I'm just saying that that isn't acceptable if we want an elite program. If we aren't going to aspire to at least be BEST in our conference, lets just save the money and spend it on classes!

Forget, everything but making sure you win this Saturday vs. Hawaii.
That is a start. You can be concerned about the following opponent next week. One at a time, just like the A's did to win the West in MLB!

Yeah, well my question was what would it take to feel comfortable with Rocky Long staying as coach?... so yes, for me, if he won out and won a bowl game that would be a fairly good indication of improvement, to me anyway... and my guess is, if that were to happen, SDSU would be league champ and play in the highest bowl they would get into given they play in the MWC... so answering my question... that would be good enough to keep RL as a coach... since I am talking about good enough for me that works... If that would not be good enough for you, that is totally fine. I asked peoples opinion and I am not trying to convince you otherwise. I know you don't want to settle for 2nd tier bowls but given SDSU currently plays in the MWC, I am guessing a 2nd tier bowl would have been just about all they could get even if they had gone 11-0... don't think we would have gotten a shot at the NC but perhaps I am wrong. As far as explaining my comment to JYP... he said in order to be comfortable all it would take would be for RL to stop using the 3-3-5... my point to him was that I think it would probably take more than that (and I gave examples for him)... so that comment was directed at him specifically. Again, I am not opining about anything nor am I saying you are wrong for wanting to fire him because he didn't get SDSU to a top tier bowl this year.

That said. It will take an upset of Boise or UNR and a bowl win for me to change my mind about Rocky.

It would take the resources and tools that make college football programs a success. When I was employed in the pharmaceutical industry, our group was supplied with every tool and resource for success: vehicles, expense accounts, computers, all forms of office equipment, drug information resources and on and on and on. We could never blame the employer for our failures due to a lack of these tools. Is the philosophy the same when SDSU's administration views Rocky and the program that he is trying to lead? How does SDSU compare to the top 25 programs in the country in this regard? Does the program receive financing for top coaches? How do our training facilities compare to say U of Oregon and what impact does this play in recruiting? Give Rocky the tools, resources and financing to be competitive and successful in his line of business and let the man coach. We may just be pointing our fingers in the wrong direction folks. One can only squeeze blood from a turnip for so long. Let's not compare our program to Oregon, because its not close. Look at Boise- its a crappy commuter school in a crappy place coming from a crappy conference. They have it worse than us all the way around, but they have built success because they snagged a good coach or two. They dont recruit superstars, but they know who they want and what they will be able to do with them and they do it.
