Three more years? Really? So you believe it takes five years to be able to evaluate the quality of a HC? Boy do I disagree with that. As to Rocky, I'm with Josh. We need to get to a bowl game - and we need to play well rather than choking away a win - AND Rocky then needs to hire a DC. William deleted my thread about Joe Lee Dunn for some reason. However, why Rocky couldn't lure Dunn away from that tiny school he's now working at is beyond me. Dunn almost invented the 3-3-5 for crissakes. I'm with you on contacting and measuring Joe Lee Dunn's interest in being SDSU's DC. He's working for Hal Mumme at McMurry University in Abilene, TX, student population 1,430. Maybe Dunn, who's a southerner, just wants to live a quiet life in a little Texas town. However, he's gotta be earning peanuts. $100K tops, I would guess.

It'll really be 7 and rocky long will be 67 funnin years old, what is he going to want to extend him into his 70s. good lord YOU know you constant mentioning of age is rather disrespectful do you . I am sure Rocky is in better shape than about 80% of the guys on this board. Would you turn down Mike Bellotti.? because he is old. I am 66 and had cancer and other issuers I can still do everything I could before just not as fast. If Rokcy is not doing well coaching its nort his age but other issues. fIre the following Nick Saban 60. Gary Pinknell 60, Steve Spurrerior 66 Frank Beamer 65 BIll Snyder 72 George O Leary 65 TOM O Brien 60 Paul Pasqualani 63 Dennis franchione 62 Larry Coker 63 Norm Chow 64 Ellis Jonson 62 Franks Solcih 67 MIke Bellotti will be 62 in December so do not hire him. Steveem, I can't speak for others, but my feeling about the age issue is that it's not so much of a problem with someone you KNOW has made it big time---like Fisher. But UNlike Fisher, Rocky has NEVER shown he's capable of reaching top levels in coaching or recruiting. And THAT is the issue. He's gotten to this age without the kind of track record we want and that tells you something about where he's likely going. In addition, I feel that basketball is less affected by the "age" thing.

Lib Art alumni usually donate bountiful (look at Oxy, Whittier and Pomona in our own backyard). These coaches know the athletic dept. has financial stability, even if budget is small. I'm sure that's something you already knew. A quiet life earning +/- $100G in a place like Texas where cost of living is inexpensive, I can't blame him for being content.

First of all, Rocky is going to be here 3 years from now. Many of you can have your opinion, but nobody that makes the decision of Rocky's future cares about what you think.
Since Rocky took over UNM football in 1998, they went to 5 bowl games in 10 years. SDSU went to a bowl game in 1998 and zero bowl games for the 9 years after that. Since then we have been to 2 bowl games, one with him as the defensive coordinator and one with him as the head coach.
So, while many of you would fire him in the middle of the season, it is not likely to happen. Who has been a better SDSU football coach since Don Coryell?

So this thread turned from the original question to the typical for/against RL as coach somewhere between here: I want to see what Rocky can do for 3 more years. I will decide then, for myself, if he is the right guy. I was pleased with last year, and if this is one bad year out of 5, would feel he is the right guy. All this reaction is so much like the "Fire Fisher" threads of the past. and here: Three more years? Really? So you believe it takes five years to be able to evaluate the quality of a HC? I have been considering my own question and will get to my answer in a while.

If Rocky would hire a DC run a multiple defnese at least two . I htink he needs most of this defensive stafff gone except White. They need an experienced solid oline coach as well. If they finished with seven wins and did all those things I would have no qualms about another year.

How about some sell outs? Right now the athmosphere at home games is not big time. A half full stadium won't bring in the elite recruits which any coach needs to win at the level fans on this board seem to unrealistically expect year in and year out. Are you people just plain ignorant? Do you think Reggie Bush or Mark Sanchez are going to attend Aztec Home Games and be overwhelmed by the 23k in the stadium?
If the Aztecs are going to have any shot in competing in the so called Big East, the fans are going to need to show up (no pun intended) and establish a legitimate home field advantage.

You guys have 15 other threads to argue crap about Rocky Long... thanks for screwing this one up too.
(I was going to try to continue the discussion by posting how I would answer my question but never mind...)

However, why Rocky couldn't lure Dunn away from that tiny school he's now working at is beyond me. Dunn almost invented the 3-3-5 for crissakes. I must disagree. Certainly, finishing above .500 and going to a bowl game is the goal for a number of reasons. However, if the team finishes 6-6 or even 5-7, I would not be in favor of changing head coaches. Rocky Long is not Chuck Long. He is not a man with no head coaching experience before taking over here. And, obviously, C. Long never won more than 4 in three seasons, whereas Rocky has an 8 win season on his resume at SDSU. In addition, Rocky's teams finished on the plus side 5 times while he was HC at New Mexico, each of those years ending in bowl appearances. What is disappointing to me is how many posters on AztecMesa apparently think that success at New Mexico can safely be ignored. Let's be straight on that; winning 64 games in 11 seasons at New Mexico should be seen as a near miracle. I suggest that you take a look at Rocky's New Mexico record (http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/coaching/alltime_coach_year_by_year.php?coachid=1398). You will notice that it took Rocky four years before he had a winning season. I guess those in charge of NMU's athletic program figured out that a new coach needs time to establish his own program. Remember, this is Rocky's SECOND year as HC. Were Hoke still here, it would be his fourth season. We still don't know how 2012 will turn out. Obviously, we have big problems, especially on defense. I personally attribute much of our weakness to loss of key personnel from last year and, as a result, the need to rely on undersized and inexperienced players. But even if coaching is partly to blame, there is time to correct those shortcomings. My bottom line is this. Barring a horrendous finish (3-9 or 2-10), it would be foolish to dump Rocky and hope we won't have to rely on a first-timer (Mike Locksley) or a long-out-of-practice retread (Bob Davie). If this is a disappointing season (though we could still finish with 7 or more wins) and 2013 is a disaster, then looking for a new coach might be the way to go. Let's just remember that a new coach might be no better, and perhaps even worse, than the one we get rid of. Too many fans think a change will automatically bring more wins. AzWm

win out and win any bowl game that we get invited to. Zuma, I truly understand your displeasure with RL given you were fired for reasons which pale when compared to allowing your opponent to score 3 times in a total of 15 plays in the 4th Q of a home game and then losing the battle for the coveted oil can after being spotted 14 points...

8-4 or 7-5 with a win @boise or Nevada and not lose to a sun belt or equivalent team in a bowl So I guess my crazy demand is for him to beat one half way decent team every 2 years I'd likely be fine if he just completely changed up his defense in-season and found something that could hold back the river for the rest of the season Nice answer Monty. I knew you really just wanted the Aztecs to win and didn't really care who the coach was as long as they won. (Obviously you don't think RL is the guy but at least you are hoping they win even with him as coach.)

Given what you have seen this year from the staff and players, knowing the limitations that exist at this time (with both staff and players), and knowing who is remaining on the schedule - what would it take for you to become or remain comfortable with Rocky Long as the coach at SDSU? He'd have to move away from the 3-3-5. I realize you are answering literally what would make you 'comfortable' but I'm gonna guess if they switched to a standard 4-3 and lost all of the remaining games you would not be so comfortable. And you have to agree if the Aztec won all of their remaining games and then won a bowl game against a second tier BCS conference team (which is all they would play) it would be the best any Aztec team has done since Coryell was here.... so if that happened, even you would admit you were cool with RL even if they played the gimmicky D that they do. Yes??

Yes?? I don't know why people would ever be satisfied playing in Podunk Bowl against Hillbilly U. We need to quit aspiring to mediocre bowls and 7-5 seasons and start beating quality opponents (or hell, for that matter, inferior opponents) on a regular basis.

SJSU had a 9k announced crowd the week before they beat us at home Right, and last week 85k attended Wisconsin @ Nebraska. Tennesee @ Georgia had 80k. Different opinions. You feel it starts with attendance. I feel it starts with coaching and recruiting. If you have that, then you win games. If you win games, people will show up. Unfortunately for us, we've had such a long tradition of losing, it will take longer to attain high attendance consistantly. People just don't have faith that the football program won't "trick" them again.
