For those of you who watched UW beat Stanford last night you may be wondering how good our 2-2 Aztecs really are now. Yes our team has it's ups and down on special teams and defense. But if you looked at the kicking situation and the young D line before the season these things were not totally unexpected.
That being said it's time for San Diego, and San Diego State fans, to back their team in a meaningful way. Not just on blogs, not just from your couch, but in person at Aztec Warrior Stadium. This team has more potential than I think many have realized yet and they need big crowds and cheering fans to help boost their confidence at home. there is some youth out there and with that comes inconsistency and a lack of confidence. I have a hard time believing SJSU comes back if we have 55k+ plus in the stands going nuts last Saturday. Probably a lot easier to stop at least one of those 3 scoring drives on D when the stadium is packed with rabid cheering fans. Until we back our FB team like we are the BB team I expect the team will probably play up and down all season. Come on, get your butt to the games and bring everyone you know.
Remember it's easy to jump on the band wagon once they start winning, but real fans are there no matter what.

Yup. As upset as people are with losing to SJSU, the bigger issue was that we only drew 24k for that game. And I'm just as guilty for missing that game.

Yeah and I don't even believe there were that many in the stands. More like 17-18k. And we wonder why the D fell on its face in the 4th. I've played baseball at SDSU, and played minor ball after that, I also played FB in high school. Home team feeds off it's fans excitement and emotion no doubt, but last Saturday our team had nothing behind them. Yeah they should've come up with it, but a packaed stadium makes that a lot easier.

Remember it's easy to jump on the band wagon once they start winning, but real fans are there no matter what. This is well said. I have been attending Aztec games for 40 years and crowds do make it special. Look what it has done for basketball? I have seen our crowd will our team to wins in bball when we realistically were not in the game. That being said, here is a slight rebuttal and maybe some reasons why fans are not flocking to games. 1. Game atmosphere is TERRIBLE!!!! I remember when Lucchino was president of Padres and they changed the atmosphere well before the team was any good. It made a difference. i have proposed several ideas to change it with previous AD's but nobody seems to care. It is great to make deals and raise money, but our game atmosphere is abysmal and the last time that anybody actually cared was in 1992. 2. The offseason marketing is a joke. You don't create big crowds during the season. You create big crowds with big season ticket sales. Where is the urgency to sell season tickets. they should be fighting with every last breath to come up with campaigns that will sell season tickets. 3. Rocky Long is unproven and boring. I am not saying he will not be a good coach, but he doesn't create any buzz and he has never done anything to hang your hat on. 4. Nobody in the community knows our players. That includes many of our fans. 5. Home games are on TV in San Diego. I know the arguments on both sides, but if you are not invested in the program, you will probably just stay home and watch on TV. 6. Lack of marketing. San Diego should know the future of Aztec football. Who will we be playing in our league? What options are we looking at if the Chargers leave? Information should not just be disseminated......the program, and its components needs to be sold..... big time. We can't just wait for a winner. We have 2 straight years of bowl games and look at the crowds. They are terrible. There are about 30,000 fans who rarely go to games but are the type that if the Aztecs have a breakout year or 2 will be the first to tell you they have supported the program forever. You need to get those guys now! They need a reason to get off their asses and get to the games and get there early! Right now, there isn't. I am a huge fan and have been forever. But the game experience stinks and the stadium feels like a morgue. It keeps people away.

Tradition is getting better, excitement is a reflection of the Coach.

Agree - but in the short term it may be the best strategy until we have a few winning seasons and bowl wins - need to establish a winning tradition (even if it’s against no name teams).

If they are not on TV, the team will be ignored. Taking them off TV will create smaller crowds.

I kind of agree with you. He does need to win and his personality won't matter if he goes 10-2 every year. But his job is not just to coach football. He is the leader of the program. His top jobs are recruiting, recruiting, recruiting, marketing, hiring assistants and developing them, recruiting and then coaching.

I hope that is not going to be people's mantra/attitude when we join the Big West. That league is chalk full of San Jose States. Fans, students, alumni and the community should want to see SDSU... opponent shouldn't matter.

The thing is, the official attendance was 34384 for Cal Poly last year. Somehow, somewhere, the buzz is off this program. first home game of the year, just like last year, students showed up for the 1st game then dwindled. But the alumni haven't shown up for crap all year. It might be just a minor part of the explanation but I think Rocky's almost complete lack of enthusiasm has a lot to do with it. As I keep saying, Rocky reminds me most of a hard working Ted Tollner. Ted didn't inspire anybody to come out either and attendance was on a constant decline when he was our HC. Note: For the less than astute, I am NOT advocating that Rocky be fired. I'm simply calling it like I see it and Rocky just does not appear to be a war time conciliere.

The recruiting, hiring, and developing is part of the head coaching job, but marketing? Doesn't SDSU have a marketing department for all that? The marketing portion of the athletics department is awful. Many blame one man who has held his job for years and years. I don't blame him because I simply don't have any information as to how the thing is set up. If that one man is really to blame, his superiors need to start building a case to remove him from his job so they can get somebody in there who is competent.

Tomorrow will be my 5th game of the year and I don't live within 100 miles of the Q. For those of you that haven't made it out, this is one of the most fun Aztec teams I've seen. They play hard and are exciting, no excuse for not coming out to support them.
